Winning Grammys has nothing to do with fairness and everyone who gets nominated has friends on that board. Surprisingly enough, she beat out artists who I feel were much more popular than her, it's really just if they like you more or not. Nothing personal to people like you who feel as though artists you like are "more deserving."

As far as the popularity goes...obviously some of the teeny-boppers up here have the Grammys confused with the American Music Awards...although they've developed a lot of similarities over the years. Bieber will clean up at the AMAs. :-)

I'm not even much of a fan of Justin Bieber or Drake but I agree that Esperanza did not deserve to win this award. Esperanza fans continue making the argument that she has an amazing voice, and I'm not saying that she doesn't. However, there is more to being BEST NEW ARTIST than just having an amazing voice, you should have an amazing career and compared to Justin and Drake's platinum selling albums, sold-out concerts, and Justin's movie, she lacks that by a long-shot.

I'm very happy for Esperanza. I bought her album AT LEAST two years ago. Just when I thought the Grammys had become a TOTAL popularity contest that catered two a bunch of brain-dead teens, teenz, and generation Y and "Z-ros", than they pull this one of their collective hat. Someone with actual TALENT won the award (even though "Best New Artist" is usually a career-killer). Just because none of the teeny boppers have heard of her doesn't mean she didn't deserve the award.

The only question I have is if you bought her album 2 years ago, how is she considered the Best New Artist? I don't know the criteria involved. @jim155fan I have to admit that I've been wondering the same thing. Esperanza's THREE albums into her career, and I'm just as baffled as you are. A friend of mine reminded me that the same thing happened to Shelby Lynne some ten or so years ago. I won't say Bieber is a one-hit wonder, but he's got a long way to go. Will he be able to survive the inevitable VOICE change? Will he be able to cater a more ADULT audience as he ages? Will he upgrade his skills as a vocalist AND musician? We'll see.

fuck you bieber and drake fans. spalding makes REAL music. she plays a REAL instrument-a complicated one at that too especially if you're doing vocals at the same time. this is talent and i'm so glad the grammy's recognized it this time.

Personally, I am glad that that she won, and from what I have heard that she is very talented, and the album is really good. As for Justin Bieber;s fans, they need to get a hold of themselves, because it is not that serious. Hopefully, Justin Bieber will grow as an artist. As for Esperanza Spalding, I think that she may have a long career, in a genre of music, that is very complex and difficult to master.

I'm not even much of a fan of Justin Bieber or Drake but I agree that Esperanza did not deserve to win this award. Esperanza fans continue making the argument that she has an amazing voice, and I'm not saying that she doesn't. However, there is more to being BEST NEW ARTIST than just having an amazing voice, you should have an amazing career and compared to Justin and Drake's platinum selling albums, sold-out concerts, and Justin's movie, she lacks that by a long-shot.

It's based on what the Grammy voters see as the most talented, NOT as who is the most popular. Don't knock the jazz genre. It's not just for old people. It's also for people with taste in artists who don't need frickin' AUTO-TUNE to make them seem like they can sing well. You sound like a child who doesn't know better. Compared to JB and I don't really know who that Drake guy is, Esperanza is much more deserving and talented. Her type of music will last a lifetime. There's a difference between working your ass off to get record sales, pushing an image, and making music that's universal to everyone's ears, versus working your ass off to solely create quality, wholesome music. A real musician/artist doesn't live to try to satisfy others and the general public. the only reason why her songs seem that way is b/c she's more of a jazz musician, if you listen to jazz they're more original with their tune and use very few extra sounds where as todays era music artist use too many extras in their songs taking away from the creativity aspect she's more original which is rare, but if you understand jazz and its sound you'll understand that her songs are good, il take her songs any day over those corny & cheesy songs bieber does which have no real creativity

Everyone knowing who you are doesn't make you a better artist. In fact it can mean just the opposite. Commercial is rarely groundbreaking. It is tried and tested formula churned out for the masses.
Disney and many other companies could make a new Bieber in a heartbeat. Take a good looking kid with a decent voice, saturate the media with him and presto a child star is born.
This girl has true developed talent and wider demographic appeal. The Grammy judges made the right decision.

I'm very happy for Esperanza. I bought her album AT LEAST two years ago. Just when I thought the Grammys had become a TOTAL popularity contest that catered two a bunch of brain-dead teens, teenz, and generation Y and "Z-ros", than they pull this one of their collective hat. Someone with actual TALENT won the award (even though "Best New Artist" is usually a career-killer). Just because none of the teeny boppers have heard of her doesn't mean she didn't deserve the award.

The only question I have is if you bought her album 2 years ago, how is she considered the Best New Artist? I don't know the criteria involved. As far as Justin is concerned, he will have more opportunities to win a Grammy as he is only 16. As long as he continues to improve in his craft he could be around for a while. A friend of mine reminded me that the same thing happened to Shelby Lynne some ten or so years ago. I won't say Bieber is a one-hit wonder, but he's got a long way to go. Will he be able to survive the inevitable VOICE change? Will he be able to cater a more ADULT audience as he ages? Will he upgrade his skills as a vocalist AND musician? We'll see.

The only reason she won is like she said (49sec) she is friends with members from NARAS (National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences) which is the people who vote to see who wins the Grammys so she really had an unfair advantage to everyone else. Lucky her she has friends in high places to give her a Grammy.

I know no one's heard of her. I haven't even heard of her before the grammys but go listen for yourself before you say she doesn't deserve it. She's really quite amazing. I just watched one of her live performances on youtube and it gave me goosebumps.
