@MrPicStuff the friction from the nail knot pretty much keeps it togerther i use this knot alot and the only time i ever had problems with it is when it is two same diameter lines other that thats you can go small diameter to large or large to small
had to watch for a while to realise what a joke this explenation is , this knot is used to attach reel backing to fly line and he is attaching about 6 inches of leader , the other end as you say is about 30 yrds of line !
you are passing the loop 7 times over the main leader since the short tag end becomes the main leader at the end of the video. I tried and watch the video many times before I realized that this was the situation. I was confused, but now I'm not. Thanks for the challenge.
Wish you would have done it more than once...Being a beginner and watching this it is tough to tell what is what. Your youtube limit isn't 2 minutes. All the people saying "great guide" already know how to tie the knot and it is tough for me as a newbie to learn from this.
@plaije I replayed the video many a time. Trying to figure out which end of the leader was which took about 25 minutes. If he was more clear in the video, which I guess was delivered for new fisherman, then there would been no problem. Don't call me a putz for not having an explanation well done.
hmm i dont get it something is wrong ,the knot is right, but the short end off the leader is the main leader so you have to pull the hole leader true the knot ,well maby it is me that dont see it
Wow you make that look so easy , i have been looking for the tool to tie nail knots, i have tryed your way and that is easy and no tools required even a small twig works thanks.canada
Awesome. Easy to understand. I just started fly fishing and this was a great video. In fact, I was able to tie a leader to the fly line at the shore the same day when blue fish kept clipping my leader.
I always tie it with a twig. I don't carry a nail or tube in my fishing vest, but I can always find a twig (usually willow) along a trout stream and it works fine
Bowlines are useless on fly rod. The lowprofile of the knot is required to pass through the rod guides. And the nail knot, properly tied as demonstrated, will cut the fly line before it will come undone. Ask any experienced fly fisherman.
A figure of eight follow-through would work just as well, but it's tedious when you're working with fishing line. It's got a rather low profile, but I suppose round lashing your line works about the same.
A bowline doesn't hold in monofilament. It would probably hold in fly line, but linking a bowline and a perfection loop or other loop that works in monofilament leader would give you a weak knot that would be too big to go through the guides smoothly, if at all.

Im thinking tying a granny knot in the end of the fly line would keep it from slipping.

I 'm looking for a good knot for joining equal diameter mono to mono (100lbs +).
Will this work or will it slide off?
I used to use the bloodknot but it's too weak.
Thanks

At least now I won't tie knots on the end of my line the size of my fist!!!
I have a nail tool and I still get tied up on this one.
I go through leaders like no tomorrow!
