PSX is the name of Sony's direct-drive turntables from the late 1970s. That's where the name originally comes from. I currently own a PS-X5 and used to own the legendary PS-X75.
@vanillasunshyne Yes, but there was a PSX console in Japan that played PS1 and PS2 games, it looked like an oversized DVD player, there was a few different models. Wikipedia it.
The name PSX was just a prototype name for the PS1, Sony dropped the X and called it PlayStation. But then Sony did release a console in Japan (2003) called the PSX which was a PS1 and PS2 console all in one.
PSX was the name I saw in mags like GamePro and EGM back around '94, before anyone knew the official name.
Many years later, Sony did release a DVR unit in Japan that was also a PSOne (and PS 2, IIRC); that was officially named the Sony PSX.
Much like the GameCube being called the GCN, it stuck as a quick acronym, especially once the smaller PSOne was released; PSX became a very easy way to verbally distinguish between them.
Omg all this psx and Ps1 - The psx was the name of the console before it was relesed like project natal from microsoft that was given the name kinect the psx was the grey colour system and the Ps1 was excactly the same in everyway apart from the fact it was alot smaller and was white
@MrNicktheparakeet The PSX is a multimedia system launched in Japan, whose sales figures were low and the system deemed failure., all of this because of its high price
It consisted of a unit that could play both PS1 and PS2 games, as well as record DVD (I think). It also was a DVR. That's why it had an internal HDD that would vary in capacity; there were two versions: 160GB and 250GB.
You could connect the PSP to it, and it was the first PS system to use the XMB interface/GUI
The Saturn was knobeled from the start I was a SEGA Fan until I saw Resident Evil on an Import PSX. I knew within a few minute's that the way froward was Sony... I did buy a Saturn but it was ten years later.
Lol i remember on one of the levels on this game if you stepped off of the sidewalk you would hear "aaaarrrrggghhh" and you would take damage.Lol the designers of the game actualy made it so you lose life for stepping off of the curb of the sidewalk. That was an insult to the memory of the character John Mclane, they made him a total faggot in this game ,if you stepped off the curb about ten times you would collapse dead lol
i have both versions and the saturn version is MUCH worse then the ps1 version. on saturn the game just runs slow as hell, and everthing looks ugly in comparsion. but i still prefer the saturn over the ps1 :)
Saturn version is better cause number one... u can use the Saturn Stunner Lightgun... meanwhile the stupid ps1 version is was not compatible with Namco's GunCon/G-Con 45 controller or GunCon 2.
@lmcgregoruk actually the psx version just works with a mouse, the justifier is not compatible, beside the saturn version is compatible with the saturn stunner and mouse too.
@BIMBOBOOP Well I don't know about all territories, but the UK PAL release definitely worked with the Justifier, just not Namco's Guncon/G-Con 45 or GunCon2.
@ddanner1987 It makes sense. It's the original name, Play Station X. They changed it last minute in 1994. And then made the stupidest decision ever to name a PS2 DVR like it.
@ddanner1987 FYI, PSX was the name of the Playstation while it was in development and it essentially carried over to the public because the media continued to call it that. When people refer to PSX, they're generally talking about the PSOne.
thinking of getting 1 ......about 29 dls at a local game store. just to play knights. pencer dragon, virtua cop,and some kick ass us released rpgs....yeah rigth....
the saturn could do better then psx,but name some games that are actually programed so well that they show off.i know fv2 looked amazing and used both processors, one for backgrounds and one for the characters.
Actually SonicProwler15, i'd have to dissagree. Programming multiple CPU's was uncommon. However the 32X had the same architecture.
The main thing that plaged the Saturn (development-wise) was the lack of support for developers.
Namely the lack of good Dev Kits and poor and incomplete documentation left developer's scratching their heads. Also Sega (unlike Sony) did not have a Developer's Support Service whom Developers can contact for information.
The SEGA Saturn lasted for almost 4 years [discontinued April 1999] in the USA, while in Japan is lasted for around 6 years [discontinued sometime in 2000].
The thing about consoles is, usually, if it's popular in Japan it fails in the USA. If the console is popular in the USA, it's not as well in Japan.
sega saturn had 2 proceesors clocking at 25mhs,while on was use and the other processor was just in there doing nothing, oohh wait it elped the sound, who needs to dedicate a whole processor just to music that already is on cd.
shut the fuck up dickhead why would i be dumb if i make 50 euro per hour?.i'm no computer nerd, and why would'nt they you're saying makes every saturn comercial bulshit even sega said they used the processor for dolby suround sound and sound control.fucking dipshit try and come back with some sense of decency.
really? i didn't know that retards could make 50 Euros an Hour!
Please Explain how do YOU do it?
Also, Saturn games were (in average) the exact same price as PS1 games. CARTRIDGE games like the ones on the N64 were the ones that were more expensive due to them being a Solid State Medium, while CD's were an Optical Medium
oh okay, but when someone says "any retard/eurofag/prostitute can easily make 50 euro an hour" my first instinct is to assume that person uses euros. lol did you expect me to actually give enough of a damn to go through your channel just to make sure you were from any country that uses euros?
You're just making up excuses to hide the fact that you actually thought Saturn games were more expensive than PS1 games.
I don't want to argue or correct you, but the Sega Saturn had 3 cores in it's processor. That's why it never made it many years.(Too much money and effort to code games for the 3 cores)
I got a list. 1.Panzer Dragoon 1 and 2 2. House of the Dead 3. Cyber Troopers: Virtual on 4. Shining force III 5.Daytona USA 6. Radiant Silvergun 7. Burning Rangers 8.Nights Into Dreams 9. Dragon Force 10.OutRun 11.Shinobi Legions there is the list of games you asked for. =)
The PS1 has better hardware, also it was hard to code games for the saturn because it had a triple-core processor. They was costing too much money and effort to keep bringing games out.
also, the Saturn has 6 separate processors. And, if you look at the 2D shooters and side scollers, the Saturn kicked the PS1's ASS!! lol, but don't get me wrong, the PS1 is a great system!
Anyone else notice how many more white shirted men were at the end there in the PSX version? is that just randomly generated or what? because the Saturn had a bigger variety of people.
your all right the ps1 had the upper had because it had all the developers but saturn had the hardware, it was actually better in specs than the ps1 but since sony's ps1 was easier to program for they could make everything on that system look as good as saturn because the saturn was hard to program for. resulting in not using the system to it's full abilites. the only people that could use saturns power fully were sega. ex, compare virtual fighter 2 to tekken 2. tekken 2 looked terrible! clunky
Relax! ^^ I am only makeing a comparison of this game. Fonts, text, and 2D effects are better in Saturn in this video. PSX has a nice effect at the explotion, (0:17).
Saturn is excelent!!! I love it too! I was making a comparison between PSX and Saturn in this game.
i agree, btw there's lots of people confused about Saturn specs. (except sony fanboy who will say that PS is better anyway..) Someones thinks that saturn got around 28mhz and ps1 around 34mhz, and that makes ps1 better. that's wrong! Saturn got TWO 28mhz processors!! 28+28=56
56mhz VS 34Mhz, that's almost two times faster.
the real saturn weakness was programming. It's damn diffucult, some games uses just one processor to make things easier :\
yea i heard that the saturn was so damn hard to program games for it.maybe thats why the saturn didnt have as much of the blockbuster games that psx had, because if it did, maybe more people would have more open the saturn, but i still love the games that the saturn put out anyway :)
You don't just add the mhz rating because there are two cpus. The reality is that you'll never achieve a doubling of performance simply by adding a second CPU, and you definitely wouldn't achieve anything like "double the mhz." For a number of reasons (such as sharing the main bus, memory, and so on), a dual-cpu system, especially back then, would be less efficient than a single faster cpu. However, the main benefit of the PSX was that it had dedicated hardware to do special effects (i.e, snes)
@fr34kaccident Haha Fail. And who won that console war?? Sega is a big FAIL. This is the company that brought you the mega CD, the 32X, the Saturn and Dreamcast. Just look at the sales figures, look at how many quality 3D games (and some 2D) came out for the PS1, look at all the 3rd party support. "whooped the psx"? I don't think so!
@5up3rk1w1 well as i stated that's just my opinion. i didn't state that as fact. but of course people like you never take the time to actually read something, or maybe its just ignorance that made you feel the need to say that my opinion is wrong or flawed in one form or another. but i respect that you have you're own outlook on the matter, and am glad to hear the support for Sony in this topic.
@5up3rk1w1 u call sega a fail but they didnt actually go bank rupt they just lost the console war and started making some of the best games on the ps2 xbox and gc and they still do yeah they lost the console race but they still make some fun ass games and dc was way better than ps1 in my opinion as i own both actually i own a ps1 and 2 and 3 and a dc and just wondering have you played any games on 32x saturn megacd or dreamcast
Also Alien Trilogy originally ran at 60fps on the Saturn but they had to cripple it at Sony's wishes. It made me sick but I didn't speak out as I liked my job, lol! (Although unfortunately I got ill months later and had to leave anyway. :( )
I can tell you that the Saturn version (of the Die Hard With A Vengeance section at least) is OFFICIALLY better than the PS1 version because I actually worked for Probe who made the game. This section of the game was given to a different programmer than the PS1 version and he ported it so quickly that he had a lot of extra time so he improved it including actually adding MORE effects. This section was so good on the Saturn that the QA department actually played it in their spare time, lol!
But it's actually the opposite thing you are telling. The Sega Saturn version is showed in the left screen and the PlayStation version in the right screen. And the game on the right screen looks nicer (has more effects) and runs faster (it reaches the high score screen before) than the game on the left screen...
I've played them on both and I can say, even as a Saturn fan, that the PSX version was tonnes better. Third party ports were often comparatively poor on the Saturn which was a real shame as the hardware had the power. I've no idea what Bluespirit76 is talking about!
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
The PSX had alot more muscle than the Saturn. PSX was built intentionally for fully 3D graphics. Whereas the concept with the Saturn was to be a 2D system with a little bit of 3D hardware. That why there were games like Saturn Bomberman and Bug, Sonic 3D etc.
"The PSX had alot more muscle than the Saturn" ...you just don't know what you're talking about. Look at the very last games on Saturn, Quake, Duke Nukem, Nights, Sonic R, the 3D section of Sonic Jam. The problem was that the complicated chipset of the Saturn made it hard to program 3D games, and as a result developers only acheived the 3D potential of the Saturn towards the end of its life. Third party developers (as you can see in this game) didn't have the knowledge to program as well as PSX.
Dude I wasn't badmouthing the Saturn. I loved the Saturn way more then the PSX. I was just quoting what was said in the history of the Dreamcast. NiGHTS was awesome one of my fav games of all time! I loved Duke Nukem and I'm stoked that Death Tank made it to XBLA!
I can tell which versions are which: The Saturn version is on the left, the PlayStation version is on the right. How can I tell? The High Scores come up quicker in the Saturn version than on the PlayStation version.
always dreamcast

If you don't believe me...just look for dev commentary on PS3 development..
They will tell you that the PS3 is incredibly frustrating to program on and develop for...which was the reason for the low attachment rate.

However, the main benefit of the PSX was that it had dedicated hardware to do special effects (i.e, snes)

no its not double but its a huge boost. look at all the dual core cpus today. they have a lot more power than single cores.

@fr34kaccident couldnt agree more man the saturn kicks ass in ways the ps1 could never match

It all depends on the game. The Saturn was harder to develop for. When a developer is able to fully take advantage of the hardware, it shows.

This comment has received too many negative votes show
The PSX had alot more muscle than the Saturn. PSX was built intentionally for fully 3D graphics. Whereas the concept with the Saturn was to be a 2D system with a little bit of 3D hardware. That why there were games like Saturn Bomberman and Bug, Sonic 3D etc.

uhm did you actually get the point of this video ? lol
FinalFantasyXXVI 3 years ago
Yeah I did but each consoles original concepts were very different which is what I was pointing out.

The right (Playstation) version looks way better. Better rendering, better framerate.

I can tell which versions are which: The Saturn version is on the left, the PlayStation version is on the right. How can I tell? The High Scores come up quicker in the Saturn version than on the PlayStation version.
ineedapizza 4 years ago
Also, the PS1 version has better 3D effects, while the 2D parts are better on the Saturn.
