@rcmixed Yes that's the idea. this method has been taken up by the likes of the UK and Canada. The general idea is a good one. However, it is a flawed system. It does work well in a lot of ways but there are many issues that need to be addressed. One of the issues is that it does not reward education. If you take a quick one year course to be a hairdresser or a brick layer you get immediate residency. But if you study for certain Masters/PhD's you still do not qualify for residency..
To be fair there is a shortage if skilled hairdressers in Australia. And if those job vacancies aren't going to be taken by locals then it makes sense for foreigners to train for them.
However, the way the department of immigration implements the rules and rule changes does put a lot of these foreign students in very awkward situations.
Her problem was coming here on a hairdressing course. Who the hell relies on hairdressing to migrate to another country?.. This course should never have been offered. It's just backdoor migration posing as "education".
