  • i just got this lens a few weeks ago and picked it up for 90 bucks canadian. and holy fuck kitty, am i ever in love. what a sharp, fast, fun lens for the price!

  • why are you standing behind the camera. cant see crap

  • I have just got this lense for the d40x. manual focusing is not a problem with me. but it's supposed to be a sharp lense, and it isn't sharp at all. i get a misty fog on my pictures. people also say it can be used for any photo's, except it won't let me focus it any further away than i am to my pc screen right now. i tried to take a portrait shot of my sister, but it will NOT let me focus it, the only place it will actually focus is SO close up on the eye. please help!?

  • @swiftjumper101 no. i also have an d3100. Great camera but no built in af motor

  • how's the sharpness at wide open? thanks!

  • @gibor4975 It's best at f4.

    1.8 is a bit blurry

  • hello , i have a micro 60mm 2.8 lens , shall i get this one or they're relatively the same ?

  • will this autofocus in D3100

  • @Astrazub NO, d3100 does not have autofocus motor.

  • is that lens good for d3100 ..?? anyone??

  • @bulbolTeam01 it will work but it wont autofocus. i'd recommend the 35 1.8 instead.

  • @bulbolTeam01 hey bulbol! u need nikon body AF compatible, like d90 or d7000. u can use this lens (50mm 1.8) in manual focusing only, but if u know to do that this is good lens.

  • Is this lens is a an internal camera "drill type" AF system?

  • hey I noticed this video is from 2008, do you still have that lens? If you ever decide to sell it for a reasonable rate please think of me, lol

  • will this lens auto focus with the d200?

  • whats the purpose of having an aperture ring if it has to be locked in f/22 all the time?

  • THAT autofocus is SUPER FAST

  • most comments are dumb.

    video is pointless.

  • Will it Blend?...That is the question!

  • Can the AF here works on a D90 body?

  • Can the AF works on the D90 body?

  • Even if it wont AF with my camera body, i think i will still buy it. The manual focus encourages me to slow down, and compose, rather than shooting pictures willy-nilly.

  • I'm having the worst time with this pair of lens. I mean, it is really sharp but I just can't seem to get it to focus automatically on my d90, only manually. I plan on using it for close up glamour/beauty shots (lips, lashes, etc.).

  • @robib2 if ur gonna use it for portraits and stuff who cares if u cant auto focus

  • what a nasty noise

  • how do you change the appeture on this lens it wont let you lock it in place with f1.8

  • @ihateyaacov you have to change it via camera

  • @ihateyaacov

This lens Has an aperture ring and in order to control the aperture in camera you have to lock the aperture ring at its max aperture. The only time you should ever unlock it from f22 is when using on a manual film body.

It doesn't mean its stuck at 22, its just so the lens can stop down with control from your camera...

If your using any digital body, lock the aperture ring at f22 and forget about it.

it will still shoot at 1.8 if the ring is locked at f22....

  • To bad it doesnt have internal focusing and manual aperture on the D300.

  • sweet.

that seems like a snappy autofocusing speed.

i read the 50mm f1.4 AF-S G lens on the other hand, focus with a going through glue-like speed

  • it will work on the d40,d40x,d60,d3000,d5000 just keep in mind that it will not automatically focus for you, you will manually have to do it. i actually prefer manually focusing anyways

  • Hi! I just found this video reading about te nikkor 50mm 1.8D, I got a d90 and just bought one. It seems to work but to attach it to the body it's kinda hard, it needs more presure than other lenses that I have, is it normal? would it damage my body? Hope you can answer, thanks :)

  • I also have the same lens w/ the D90 and yes, this lens requires a little more turn to snap it onto the body.

  • E.E. so Emma Emmerich is an error? now that's something. lol

  • sorry for my lack of understanding but isn't it the point of buying this camera to use the whole point of having large aperture of 1.8 ? but you decreased it to f22. ? I must def not be understanding this .... pls help

  • @TheRealChina You have to have it at f22 for it to be able to function...however you can change the aperture with the in-camera settings.

  • hey does it work with the d300s? 300dx?

  • D300s yes

  • @ChrisGugliuzza "You have to have it at f22 for it to be able to function"

mmmhh! I have this lens locked to f/1.8 and my D300 controls the aperture.

  • will it autofocus on the D70 , and where can i buy one realtivily cheap

  • i works on my fujifilm s3 pro . love it

  • so will it autofocus on the d3000?

  • No. This lens will only autofocus on bodies with the little screw driver on the mount. This excludes the D40, D40x, D60, D3000, and D5000.

  • @zburke3 No it will not focu on the D3000, D5000, D40, D40x and D60. It will focus on D50,D70s,D80,D90,D100, D300, D700 and best.

    Regards

  • No it wont, The D3000 does not hav a built-in motor.

  • Hey Chris, does it work on a d80?

  • Hey. Yes it does, the only cameras that it won't autofocus on is on the d40 and d40x I believe..

  • will this lens work on fujifilm s5pro?

  • I don't think it will fit on non-nikon cameras.

  • Comment removed

  • @aidid12345 i am actually pretty sure it will, as the fujifilm s5pro is just a d200 with a diffrent inside, almost sure of it infact :)

  • yeah?

if it does then im totally going to get it..

    thanks :)

  • @aidid12345 i am not going to lie, i am not 100 % sure

but if u looke at dom bower ;;;;;;;;;> i k now he uses nikon with both his nikon d300 and he has a fuji slr as well :D i mean u hsould be able to google it , best of luck, let me know lol

  • okie dokie.i'll keep you updated.but im pretty sure it'll work. :)

  • @aidid12345 yes it does

  • I've got it today and it's f*** great :D

  • hi, thanks for the video and will it auto-foucs when used with D90(not the video)?

  • Most of my best images have been made with the 50 1.8. It's super light and one of the smallest Nikon lenses while still being pretty sturdy--the mount is metal.

It's much easier to carry around than say a large zoom or even larger telephoto. The image quality produced is amazing, though perhaps the straight-out-of-lens shots don't have as saturated color as a much more expensive lens, but that doesn't matter that much if you do post processing on your best shots anyway.

  • can this lens work with D40x

please some 1 get back to me with some help

    thanks

PS: which lens will work with d40x in a-f

  • No will not work on the D40. At least the AutoFocus will not. Similiarly lock to F/22 and the D40(x) will meter but will be a manual focus since body has no internal AF motor.

The new 35mm Prime DX will work with the D40(x) youre best best

  • this lens will not autofocus on a d40x :(

  • @ChrisGugliuzza What About the d3000.. No right?

  • @ChrisGugliuzza

    what about on a D90?

  • @Odie537 Works great on a D90. It will A/F

  • @hidri86

You could try the 50mm F.1.4. That has build in auto focus.

  • @hidri86

Camera bodies without a focus motor (D40(x), D60, D3000, D3100, D5000, D5100) need a lens with focusmotor (AF-S lenses) to be able to autofocus.

  • @mrblablablabla i have a nikon 5100,will the only problem with it be it not be able to autofocus?other than that will it work fine on a 5100?

  • @verizonlamborghini yes, it will work fine on a D5100, except for the auto focus, which will not work. Get the AF-S 50mm f/1.8G if you want auto focus.

  • got this today... loving it :))

  • I'm not sure why you're being called a punk. is it because the lens is cheap? Anyway, it's not cheap, IT'S INEXPENSIVE. The lens itself is AMAZING. Incredibly sharp, great low-light performance, and should have been priced way higher. It's like people are complaining that it's not expensive. I don't get that.

  • it's cheap because those are made in china. if they were made in japan..then the price would probably be doubled

  • bitch learn about fucking photography

a 50 mm 1.8 is one of the fastest lenses period.(besides the 1.4)

It is one of the sharpest lenses i have ever used and your a idiot for thinking its a shitty lens because it is cheap.

If you ask any REAL photographer they will tell you its an amazing lens good for any situations.

    Get some fucking knowledge "punk"

  • @hatinabox1234 no need to disrespect. It's really not that serious.

  • @hatinabox1234 it is a fast lens no doubt but there are lenses with an aperture of 0.95. don't believe me? look it up

  • @krazyhobo69 ya no doubt, but its just not super common, and i dont know whats going on with my comment up there.... i must have been mad at something :P

  • @hatinabox1234 yeah... they are many lenses that is faster than 1.4

  • @hatinabox1234

What about the noctilux f:1.2 and f:0,95 ? So you do not know that much and you should watch your language.

  • I have a d-90 and got my 50mm 1/8 on ebay for 105$. Wow, for close portraint, work it is great, and in low light night photography....again WOW.

  • I have a D300 too and am thinking about the 50mm ƒ/1.8. Can you tell me how well it responds?

  • great lens for the price! This is the only good lens for around $100

  • the 55-200 is decent too

  • I want one. with some extension tubes!

  • i am new in photography stuff. i want to know what is 50mm lense for?

  • Mainly portraits

  • It can be used for whatever you want to use it for. be creative.

  • Did I get it right, you can't set the aperture manually with aperture ring on the lens, you have to use it always locked?

  • It has to be locked always.

  • then what is the point of it being there? the aperture ring can be unlocked but for no purpose?

  • for use on older cameras that dont automatically set the aperture for you, like an older film camera.

  • only thing i dont like about it is that it doesnt look cool on my d200 =(

  • haha well, if you're buying equipment to look cool, you're into photography for the wrong reasons.

  • Haha, that's the coolest lens of them all!

especially on the D200 or the D300.

  • Just wondering, is your camcorder auto-focusing itself? It's a little annoying... lol. Anyways, great buy for the Nikkor 50mm F1.8. Once I get a D90, it's probably the first glass I'm going to get.

  • Great lens i love mine and would be lost without it. And to answer some previous questions yes it will work with the d40 but you have to do everything manually which honestly is worth it for the outcome. Enjoy!

  • Im selling this same lens.

  • for how much?

  • will this fit with nikon d40?

  • It will, but you have to focus manually

  • I have also bought a D300 :) Which lense should I use for best night photography, such as shooting landscape and stars?

  • shooting landscape and stars are on two very different edges :x

  • in terms or lenes you couldnt really get any more apart....ummm try a 17-35mm 2.8 or 14-24 for landscape for night well....ummm 85mm 1.4 or the 50mm 1.4 would do fine

  • i want to know what can i do with lense

can i use it for sunset or landescap?

  • not wide enough for landscape and its a wide aperture lens which is for isolating subjects so its designed for long exposure wide shots like landscapes and sunsets..i would recomend.the sigma 10-22 its great but a little shoddily made and has funky distortion awesome colours though... tokina make a sturdy 11-16 which is probably your best bet. shooting nikon unless you want to pay for a thier amazing 14-.......i forget wide zoom.

maybe look into medium format film if you are serious about it.

  • but on my d40 ther is no focus motor or mode

  • alimagics- you should have gotten the 35mm f1.8. that basically the same as this, but will focus on the newer lower end cameras

  • yeah that happend to me. i got this lens for my d40. no auto focusing. ill get a d90 later

  • helloo i just recently got 1

the thing is its not auto focus

what do u think about it?

  • it depends which camera do u have.. if u have a d40/d40x/d60 it wont autofocus cause none of those have an autofocus motor in their bodies . that means only af-s lens will autofocus cause they have focus motor installed inside the lens.. hope i helped . cya

  • Can I have your D300?

  • go exercise!

  • lol

  • awesome lens! just got it today!

  • can you use it on other apertures if you're on manual?

  • is it good for landscape phtography..??

  • Its ok, not the sharpest lens...but yeah its applicable for that

  • A 50 for landscape photography? I would get something like the 28mm f/2.8 for landscape photography...

  • I'm going to get this on friday, why do you have to lock te aperture at 22? I have a d40.

  • the auto focus wont work with your d40

  • Aww how about a d60 i am thinking about buying that.!>?

  • nope, however it should work on a D50,D70,D80,D90. d40-d60 only autofocus certain lenses marked afs or af-i if im not mistaken. I just bought it for my d40 and aperture changes, just have to manuel focus it.

  • Hi sorry for a bit late reply, I have the Nikon D40, I am very pleased with what i have got at the moment!

    (Thanks any way!)

    Aiden

    xXx

  • You need to lock it at the maximum aperture so the camera can control the aperture, in M I'm pretty sure you don't need to do that.

  • man, terrible camera angle!

  • LOL...when I first got the lens I saw the

"error" on display. I almost about went crazy trying to figure out why I couldn't shoot. I now use this lens on my D40x on manual. I love this lens.

  • what was it you said that it can't shoot right now? why do you need to do that?

  • getting mines tomorrow cant wait

    d300 here too

  • they were thinking; hey lets omit a focus drive in-camera so we can acheive a quality product at less cost.

  • Is it difficult to focus it by hand at 1.8?

  • not at all, the shallow depth of focus creates a sweet spot that's really easy to see

  • thanks

  • i like the box

  • I see yours came with a plastic clip-on cover for the rear of the lens. Mine came with the proper screw-in one (think it's called the LF-1 rear lens cap). Mine was also already locked at f/22.

  • hello..

im using D300 and my 50mm f/1.8D just arrived yesterday,im wonder that how the focusing speed working like yours in the vid.? It is auto focus? what you do? i try several time but i don't know how..plz give me tips..Tq

  • When locking it at f/22, presumably you can still go down the f/1.8?

  • Yes, yes, there's a lever in the camera - the ring is only for use with manual cameras like the Nikon F.

  • Yes, you just have to change it via camera.

  • whoa nic box, in Singapore the box is just pure gold with wordings only

  • In Denmark, it's like bronze with dark stripings and then lettering with a large Nikon logo in the corners. I've always wondered why those things vary depending on there you are in the world.

  • Hi, I've heard that it is very soft at f/1.8. Can you confirm that? Because I'm only planning to use it at this aperture.

  • Not that I can notice. I mean, it is sharpest at around 2.-2.8, but at 1.8, you cant beat it.

  • It's not so much that it's soft, it's just an incredibly shallow depth of field at f1.8. You're literally talking about a few inches. I love this lens and it works wonderfully on my digital and my film SLR cameras.

  • I dont know why people voted less than 5, cos this vid is helpful if someone is buying a new 50mm. Anyway I have voted 5.

I feel so stupid not getting this lens yet. Its so cheap.

  • This would be great for indoor use! Cheap too!

  • wait a minute. based off of ur picture are you an active member of cameralabs

  • I know for a fact he's the user Gatecrasher :)

  • Chris, I just found this vlog. Proud owner of my first DSLR....the D80! Just bought it a couple weeks ago. I'm a COMPLETE novice to photography, so anybody who posts Nikon related stuff, I watch. I bought the 18-135mm lens kit and was thinking about buying the 70-300mm later this year. This 50mm, I don't know anything about. Is this good for macro and portrait photography? It looks cool as hell! BTW, in the background, what lens is that sitting on the floor by the exercise bike?

  • Congrats on the D80! Great camera. The 18-135 and 70-300mm is great combo, prolly all you need really. unless you need to shoot things in low light, thats where this lens comes in handy. With the aperture of 1.8, it can pretty much take a sharp picture in low lighting. And the 1.8 aperture also makes it a great portrait lens. I wouldn't use this as a macro lens however. Btw, the lens on the ground is the 55-200mm. However, it is now rarely used because I replaced it with the 18-200mm, <greatlens

  • I did indeed find this helpful, i knew about the aperture alright, but nice to see what comes in the box.. And boy, that thing is SMALL! But I can't wait to get hold of one.

  • i didn't have to do this with mine. just worked straight away. i'm using a d300 and 50 f/1.8 also.

  • Really? was yours already at the f22 position? Because this should be done first...

  • must have been. i don't remember exactly.

  • Boy, that was really helpful...

  • Is that comment supposed to be truthful, or just being a douche and being a smartass?
