Figured it out! The grenade blows up and kills you and sends the gun back. Some guns fire after you die and this so happens to be a "WTF" moment. After about the 3rd time I watched the last view, the overhead one, I saw the SPL fly back and the laser appears, just moments later, the SPL appears just above where the actual laser was shot. That sir is the explanation.

No, this is what happened. The grenade has a priority system right? Ergo, when the laser fires it's counted as a projectile rather than just a beam; which was the screw up. The priority system somehow calculated this error, and bounced the laser off as though it were a projectile. However, the trajectorial speed and direction of the laser wouldn't allow it to go any other direction than straight, which caused for the glitched back fire animation.

it was the grenade it bounced off of that no backfire plus it couldve trigered the bomb to explode early so yeah it mustve been the grenade

Heres some theories on what could've happened.

1. Super lag just happened to start, and it registered that you were the target instead of the other guy.

2. The grenade that was thrown reflected the shot and killed you.

3. The Spartan Laser shot the grenade, thus causing it to explode, and ended up killing you, making it kind of like a suicide.

The third one happened to me, same with lag. But I never seen a grenade "reflect" a shot.

it's not lag it's just that bungie never planned for a laser to hit a grenade so they never programmed it to reflect off the grenade

The guy who threw the grenade was probably host and threw it once the laser fired. And you didn't kill that guy because the laser hit the grenade first and did some splash damage on the other player. Try to find who was host and see if they still have the game.

Actually i have seen weird things in halo 3 like this, grenades sometimes catch the damage done to them and deal that damage plus the explosion damage to players who get caught (I.E. if you shoot a grenade with a sniper rifle, and it explodes theres a possibility that the grenade will do both the damage for the explosion and the sniper bullet) its a weird bug, sticking grenades to weapons and equipment as someone picks them up also does damage.
