  • The piece that made me quit piano. Holy shit, she does one hell of a job.

  • i love how when she is playing less then 20 notes at a time she isnt even paying attention

  • Absolutely the best!!!!

  • An excellent pianist. I heard her in Stuttgart performing Beethoven's Third...amazing style

  • This is the LOVE OF MY LIFE!!!!!!! what was rachmaninoff made of???? he was not a human being, then what exactly was HE???? how on earth did he write this 'out-of-this-shity-world' genius piece????

  • Standing ovation, thanks so much for posting.

  • Love it esp when she flips her hair

  • The best more!

  • You mean wow

  • @annajeehee french spelling, sorry lol

  • WAW

  • This is magnificent ......!!! Intact emotion .... much more deep than horowitz .... thank you ...

  • coragem demais é muito difícil. a música mais difícil do mundo RACH1,2,3 MOV.

    maravilhado co a apresentação..

  • passionate playing..,excellent!

  • but can she play chop sticks?

  • Very very good. I loved it and would have given her a standing ovation also.

  • GOD..!!! how can she actually memorize not only a 10 min piano concerto, but a Rachmaninoff, on top of that she plays it exquisitely and I have a hard time remembering phone numbers....

  • My god this makes me marvel at the capabilities of certain humans....

  • Very nice performance.

  • Absolutely amazing! Bravo!

  • 64 people play on a "Bontempi" piano.

  • not close to horowitz interp. she couldn't play this masterpiece strongly.

it is a very good performance to those "whoaaa she played it so fast so goood".

  • @hercin86 I've heard Rachmaninoff play it himself, and his is too pedantic, Horowitz's is surpurb in it's execution, but Olga's is magnificent in its emotion, phrasing, interpretation, and sheer power.

  • Oh my god 4:03...perfect on it's own...so poignant...

  • Martha and Olga are the best.

  • Still my favourite after 2 yrs of close Utube watch.

  • I love the clarity and transparency of her playing. No fuss, no muzz, but still intense and passionate. I think I need to listen to more of Kern's playing!

  • like if the movie shine introduced u to rach! thanks shine coz ive bn missing such a devine music all my life

  • To the people who critise this performance: Do you know what it feels like to be able to play this piece in the privacy of your own home? Do you know what it takes to be able to play this piece live in front of an audience and cameras? Do you know how how it feels to be able to play this piece AT ALL? I uncheck those three boxes for you all.

  • @ferocel I think this piece was the most awesome thing I've seen in a long time. It gave me chills & made me cry at the dramatic end! This chick is a beast on the piano, & I mean that as a compliment. I read her biography & it's no wonder she is such a talent!

  • @ferocel Great comment! It is like that old saying: "The best captains are always on shore" The critics are critics, because they can't perform, so the only thing left to do is to vent their ire, jealousy, envy and frustration. Every him/herself respecting pianist will only give thumbs up for this performance. The others probably suck at piano playing hahaha.

  • @bartje11 So true and thanks. Let's not forget sexual politics. There's at least one 'contributor' here who clearly feels inadequate at the fact that this lady can play this live as well as pretty much anyone. If this was presented as audio only and described as being played by an unknown young male, the 'contributor' in question would undoubtedly have his trousers round his ankles. These idiots are as fickle as Lady Gaga fans.

  • @ferocel Excellent points, and armchair critics (even some highly-paid, pros,) too easily ignore the sheer Work and skill required just to hit the keys. Then control phrase, tone, punctuation, tempo and all the details that make an Interpretation as opposed to a regurgitation. There are details [we] can criticize but on the whole it *is* a whole, consistent and masterful. I particularly like the clarity of inner phrasings that come through; I hope this lady goes Far in her career.

  • @ferocel People who dislike this can only master the skill in changing channels channels on their remotes.

  • @ferocel I agree - people who argue against how powerful her performance is here are in no way capable of judging the tremendous force and skill required to execute this piece. Oh, also idiots: she became the first woman in over thirty years to receive the Nancy Lee and Perry R. Bass Gold Medal for this performance that you're watching. She is a laureate of eleven international competitions.

  • @ferocel It's a symptom of the idea that attacking someone else's accomplishments can somehow make [them] feel less intimidated, less threatened, less "insignificant" by comparison. This performance of Rach 3 in many ways is the best I've ever seen-heard. Yes, I can play it, but you'll never see me do so in public; I have students who execute Rachmaninov better than I do. Olga's combination of technique, phrase, dynamics, inner voicing and pure brilliance adds up to MASTERWORK. Beautifiul!!!

  • I saw Olga's live performance of Tchaikovsky's piano concerto No.1 a few years back and it also was incredible.

  • i love Olga..she is immense..Rach is smiling listening to her...

  • 809 of the views are mine....Brilliant ! ! !

  • I was there!

  • Breathless !!!

  • Very talented!!

  • Looks like 61 people play better than Olga. I must have missed their videos.

  • I hope your comment was satirical, otherwise it was distasteful and without any music ical judgmnet. This I believe the best performance of the 3rd concerto i have ever heard.

  • This is an absolutely incredible performance. There were only a couple of small things I thought were wrong, but Rachmaninoff played those parts in the same way. Ms. Kern is a wonderful, wonderful pianist. I hope that she continues to grow through her music and plays many concerts.

  • Loving Olga's pianistic technical abilities.! Bravo. Bellissima!!!

  • My guess is those who criticize......are those who have never tried to play this.....I'd like to see those who criticize try......put your hands on the keyboard and you do it!

  • Incredible and pasionate performance. Bravo!

  • Olga Kern is the best Rachmaninov performer in the world, after Marta Argerich... ( because Marta has been playing piano longer)

only a woman can put so much emotion in a Rach 3 piano concerto....

  • Ezt az előadásmódot talán még Rachmaninov is megirígyelné!Bravo OLGA!

  • I find this idea ridiculous that a performance can only be great if you hit all the right notes. It's like saying a footballer only had a great game if every pass (s)he made was successful. You're using the wrong criteria! Of course you can't hit too many wrong notes, but the odd wrong note here and there is insignificant (for Rach and not Mozart mind you) if there is an incredible emotion to the playing. I've very rarely heard Rach 3 without ANY mistakes in live performances. Bravo Olga!

  • She's performing Liszt #2 this weekend with Houston Symphony. Anyone else going?

  • This is very well played - if you hate it - you are dumb. Could have used a few more rehearsals - the orchestra is a little sloppy - maestro holding the tempo back.

  • Uma alegria para a alma e para o coração!

  • Geez all those little runs here and there, amazingness!

  • Wow - loved her expression/gasp right after she finished!

  • Why listen to Olga Kern when there's Justin Bieber?

  • @fairyofwind Why ask that question :D

  • Seems she is afraid this Rachmaninov's composition. She is trying to play out her score as soon as possible without worrying on accents with single thought in mind: "Please, just no any errors!" I'm very impressed with her playing! But IMHO Pletnev played Concerto No. 3 better and closer to Rachmaninov's original.

Any way, greatest respect from me!!!

  • Is it just me or does it actually sound like she hits a flat note at 6:20? I've heard this many times and right there...it just doesn't sound right. Otherwise, it's an incredible performance.

  • @seattletaytay Yes, that's what we would call a "boxing glove" mistake.

  • @seattletaytay And there was really no reason it should have sounded so out of place. Horowitz hit wrong notes EVERYWHERE, but he owned them so they never really SOUNDED wrong. She's just trying to hard.

  • idk, yes she is good... But she's way too militant when she plays, I'm not feeling her notes. They're quite cold to me. Not sure if you know what I mean by that. But that's how I'm hearing it.

  • Rachmaninoff's concerts are the greatest challenge for a pianist. This is an amazing performance!

  • wow! if you can play Roch 3 you can probably do... pretty much anything. What a beautiful piece. Sierge was a genius! she's not even looking! I wonder how long it took to practice and get it perfect like this

  • wow! if you can play Roch 3 you can probably do... pretty much anything. What a beautiful piece. Sierge was a genius!

  • your small nose kills me.

  • and for the record, I was NOT one of the 58 people who "disliked" this video.

  • And yes, I have quite a few years of experience on the piano - but I don't think you should have to be a pianist to be able to criticize one. I mean, what the hell? She's a performer. She is USED to criticism. Not everyone is going to agree with her interpretation. Why are you all taking such personal offense to my comments?

  • Her performance would be much much better if she would just pick up the tempo a bit.

  • Who cares if she is a woman? Martha Argerich is a woman and she plays the sh*t out of it - even if she does donate money to anti-gay causes.

  • When a women's better than a man.

  • @DanyMuse98 not better than rach himself

  • special message to zz pianoman there is a good article in this weeks sunday times on the most prolific piano tuner he uses a suitcase of remedies for pianos and performers.Maybe he has one for tone deaf critics like yourself .

  • Total dynamite I am sure Olga could play pieces which would outshine the great H how many years has he had to practise it !!!!!!! get a life you numb skulls with nothing better to do than whatever you do in secret in the stalls

  • @zzpianoman

Upon seeing your channel, I apologize for doubting your piano experience.

However, you came off extremely fucking strong and even bashed the comments of other listeners who didn't agree with you. When you speak as if you know what sounds best, that's not criticism. Whether or not I'm criticizing you doesn't matter. I'm not saying I critic better than you do, but you are claiming that people who like things that you didn't like about this performance are "wrong".

  • @zzpianoman

Tell me, how much experience do you have with piano?

Because if you have less than I do, then yes, I don't feel you have the right to criticize something past "I didn't like how that sounded."

  • But good for her. She is obviously very talented, and tons of people like her. Who cares what I think anyway?

  • @zzpianoman That's the most sensible comment you've made (of the ones I've read - I don't have time to read them all). I wonder what your opinion of Horowitz would be if it was revealed he was straight after all.

  • I didn't "not" enjoy this performance. I just thought it wasn't very inventive. It's like tons of people play this piece and most of them play it exactly the same way. I just didn't feel any "excitement" or magic from this particular performance.

  • And I'm sorry, but all the accolades int he world will not cover up the fact that this is a boring rendition of an otherwise exciting piece of music. Listen to ANY Horowitz recording if you want to hear how the piece should ACTUALLY be played.

  • @zzpianoman Good lord. I'm sorry so many sour people that are so harsh as critics compare EVERYTHING to Horowitz. Yes, Vladimir was one of the best, if not THE best romantic interpreter ever known, but good god! I get tired of hearing "IT'S NOT LIKE HOROWITZ, IT'S BORING AND SUCKS!" Go listen to Horowitz, then. If it's really going to buzz kill every performance why bother listening to anything else? Personally I like her interpretation, its different. And there will prolly never be another Vlad

  • @aTALLmidget

You're definitely right about that. There will never be another Horowitz as long as the current teaching style is focused more on winning competitions and less on actually taking risks with the music and making it exciting. Horowitz admitted himself that he would never win a competition - and he didn't have to.

  • @zzpianoman so why keep looking for one and then disappoint yourself? At least TRY to enjoy something different for once.

  • goosebumps and tears!

  • @zzpianoman

Sorry to say, but if that was your intention, to just point out things you didn't like but not come off as disliking the performance, the number of comments you made do that extremely poorly. It's the way you came off that seemed like a snotty individual who came here to say it was mediocre and here's how to make it better.

Regardless, I don't hate critics personally. I just feel they cope out of doing something in favor of saying "I know how to do it better! Trust me!"

  • @Wonocva15

So your solution is to Criticize my criticism? Good job! You're doing exactly what you've chastised ME for doing with this video - only difference is that Olga Kern is in the public eye. She works for US - the audience. We have EVERY right to criticize her performance, as we are the ones who pay her salary.

  • I just want to say that piece took my breath away. Bravo Olga, you are the best. What brought me here today, Aug 28, 2011, is the critical remarks made about a Chinese pianist who came to the Hollywood ball, wearing a beautiful, tight and very short dress (she had the body and legs for it) and played this Third Concerto , and I am sure she was sensational. Do not understand why people have to criticize. I wish I had been there in the audience and enjoy this beautiful music. HAGD all/.

  • @joselineodile

Why people have to criticize? There is not just ONE answer to every question, and since these people put themselves out there to perform for the public (paying customers) we have EVERY RIGHT to criticize the performance if we do not feel it is to our liking. Also, simply having critical commentary on a performance does not mean that we did not "like" the performance, or that it was inherently bad. Sheesh.

  • Great, now play it up to tempo!

  • I love rachmaninoff..... so much

  • People at orchestra concerts are worried about 2 things, one being not falling asleep, and 2 being not relieving any gas.

  • Extremely well done for this insanely difficult piece. She got it right. Thumbs up.

  • she absolutely deserved first place

  • Wonderful........a real gem!!

  • I do keep re-visiting this every few weeks. In this video she is as beatuiful and sexy as she is talented. And Rachmaninov is true genius! In the words of many others --- OMG!

  • I've heard at least 100 interpretations of Rach 3, and would put Olga Kern's in my top 3. It's a stunning performance. Find it hard to believe some of the garbage posted here about posture, hand position, blah blah. Who cares about that? It's the SOUND that comes out that matters. She lives and breathes this piece. Her performance is sincere and heartfelt. I think some people think it's clever to criticize a great performance as if they know something we don't. Ignore them, sit back and enjoy.

  • @ukdavepianoman im guessing martha argerich is one of them?

  • @ukdavepianoman olga i think she the only pianist woman able to play "large and deep" as a pianist male...

  • How could any one dislike this. Honestly, there is no hope for some people.

  • Watch your language HzuRSh4

  • this is just insane

  • great performance, full of artistry, emotional power and beauty.

  • uh... typeless

  • she looks like she's getting fucked in some parts

  • @hursh4 great artist. That's passion...

  • @hursh4 Yeah!

  • Just watched this and then saw on YouTub Antonio Pompa-Baldi do the Prokofiev 3rd concerto, also from the same competition. Love Olga, but now I'm not so sure she should have won the Cliburn that year...

  • Regardless of preferences in style, I don't think many people realize what are the sacrifices and the amount of talent needed to play with such precision and beauty.

  • omg..

  • impessionante...cha faccio butto via il piano?? ma poi la sa tutta a memoria......dura 10 minuti......fortissima....

  • As Charles Dickens once said to the fairly young Arthur Sullivan. '"I don't claim to know music, but I know I like this."

  • Whoa. If I tried to play this, my hands would melt and fall off.

  • Competition playing is nothing more then a successful steeple chaise and favorable judges. A nice dress and background always helps as well, however this great masterpiece was not moved from its heights nor approached towards them on this occasion. A fastidious and competent performance with some eye candy, sure. However to compare with the greats, one must not only play all the notes and play them well, but also have meaning between them and say something during that is honest and visionary.

  • @EdmontDantes2 Thats about the most stupid and arrogant remark i've ever seen. This performance is both visionairy and extremely artistic played. Compare with the geat : :) Haha. One of the best recordings of Chopins etudes is played by Emil Gilels when he was not young - lot of mistakes - but music!! And Olga here hardly hit wrong notes. Carefull before u write mister ! !

  • Comment removed

  • its a shame olga kern isn't placed in the same category as the greats such as horowitz. I saw her live in concert and she looked beautiful, played beautifully, and made no mistakes even in the hardest of the piano repertoire.

  • @huzzzzzzahh Olga Kern is in her 30s. As far the classical piano world goes, she is still an infant. Most pianists work a lifetime to get the amount of acclaim and prestige she already has. So who knows, maybe in a few decades she will be in the "same category" as the greats. She's pretty great now...

  • @huzzzzzzahh

yes, but Horowitz made TONS of mistakes and left out many notes in his performances, yet they were still nothing short of brilliant. Why can't we have pianists like this anymore?

  • i don't think how she sits is the first thing on her mind

  • It's Olga Pataki from «Hey Arnold!»

  • i can't imagine how one can possibly remember all those notes!!

  • her musicality is not as good as Martha's haha.

  • profound beautification...

  • Beautiful!!!!!

    This is amazing!

how can someone compose music like this???!!!

    Rachmaninof is so amazing

  • great!

  • I can play "Fur Elise". ROFL

    She is amazing! :)

  • i love this but i hate that she hunches sooo bad...

  • I am in Love

  • I memorized that while she was playing it. I think I will go play it myself now. I'll be back to let you know how that works out for me.

  • @outbackeddie

    And did it, Eddie?

  • Russian lost their culture after the revolution. Now we not only do Tchaykovsky or Rahmaninoff, to Michael Jackson far (((((

  • she kicks ass!

  • Good perfomance. Not Horowitz though.

  • @SuhmMusic

no one will EVER come close to a Horowitz interpretation.

  • PLAY SOME SKYNYRD!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • i am not a musician so i do not have an expertise at all.

but by goodness this performance every time that i watch it makes me shiver

    in enjoyment.

  • Listen Valentina Lisitsa speaking about Rachmaninoff piano concerto 3 and demonstration

    youtube.com/watch?v=JgfKPnvTpNM

  • fantastic

  • 8:30 to 9:19 = pure heaven expressed through music. <3

  • They need more music like this :(

  • I am sorry but this is not Rachmaninoff

  • @musicstructure

What do you mean this is not Rachmaninoff, If you are saying that the piece of music that is being preformed was not written by Rachmaninoff then I'm sorry but you are sadly mistaken.

  • @piano1996No1

I know that this is Rachmaninoff 3 piano concert but the interpretation is absolutely not Rachmaninoff; I did not mean to offense anybody, this is not my intention, but this interpretation is just another pianistic experiment. Cheers

  • @musicstructure I completely agree the interpretation is absolutely different. But isn't great?! The Cliburn judges explicitly announced that their main judging criteria is to find the most controversial pianists in the world: they don't want to pick someone that everyone agrees sounds good. Kern toys around with Rachmaninoff's notes, but she has her own philosophy behind the way she plays. I fully support that approach in anyone's pianism.

  • @MrYou2ber Hasn't been a decent Rachmaninoff interpreter coming out of the Cliburn competition in ages, they have picked "safe" pianists. Musicstructure is right, this is not Rachmaninoff.

  • @36beachbum I think she is a great interpreter. You just don't happen to like it.

  • @MrYou2ber

Where is the interpretation? All I hear are a bunch of notes played exactly as they were written on the page.

  • @zzpianoman i don't think she actually played all the notes right, not a condition for a brilliant performance, but too much mistakes to begin with

  • @MrYou2ber

Interesting, because despite the number of WRONG notes Horowitz his during his performances, they never "sounded" wrong. The few clams Ms. Kern hits during this performance are so obvious it's not even funny.

  • @musicstructure can you try to explain me briefly ? How would you describe Original Rach style and interpretation ?

  • @fabrz71

Fast, Rhythmic, Lyrical, non-indulgent. Anything else is just "wrong".

  • That was incredible.

  • The piano's strings made 50 accounts and disliked this.

  • Performing good music is much the same as making love.

  • Rachmaninoff lives through Olga Kern

  • you know your a champ when you have a army of violins being played behind you

  • Very good interpretation, clear sound.

  • I like Argerich playing this better ! But this is a great though.

  • absolutely amazing!!

  • she is a great performer, I liked so much her way of playing

  • Oh she is wonderful!! I love women pianists & I love to see any pianist smile when they play. It's wonderful. I LOVE this piece. One of my favorites.

  • Saw her play Tchaikovsky Concerto 1!!! Amazing performer!

  • Music at its best. Bravo :)

  • Argerich kicks her ass so faaar away!!!! Kern is doing all of her effort here, Argerich was just having fun.

  • This is my favorite DVD of all times and I have listened to it so many times. Olga Kern is truly the best. What a great and outstanding performance. The music is so beautiful.

  • great ending!

  • Saw her playing last night. She's incredible!

  • Imagine getting a mind blank in the middle of playing this piece ...

  • Comment removed

  • was that a mistake at 6:20-6:21?!?!?

  • @Ming304 no, just a change in tempo (perhaps accidental, or just an interpretation)
