How I wish I was old enough to have seen this band in the '70's, but nevertheless, seeing them on their reunion tour for the first time remains, to this day, the absolute heaviest fucking thing I've ever heard. The first note of "Black Sabbath" (a.k.a. "The Devil's Tri-Tone), was like a ball bat in the gut, and Iommi's guitar absolutely growled like a monster. Sabbath did it first and best.

I love death metal, thrash, heavy metal, etc. (my favorite bands are probably Death, Slayer, Pantera, Priest, Sabbath, and others) but Black Sabbath is definitely heavy metal. Sabbath is different from other rock bands like, say, the Rolling Stones or Rush because they just have this heavy sound. How else can I explain it? Heavy is a feeling, not like sadness, but just something you feel when you listen to metal. Sabbath and Cannibal Corpse both are heavy, just very different.

Listen to the lyrics, , and listen to ominous sound of the guitar with the wah, the pain in the vocals, it's heavy, true heaviness. All these death metal bands and such are loud and fast, but none of them touch the raw heaviness of sabbath. If you don't understand what i'm saying, you have never truly appreciated sabbath.

Hard rock? Sabbath practically invented heavy metal, they are the definition of heavy metal. I mean i love hard rock, but sabbath is metal.

@lovepedallove I have listened to them, yes they are heavy, but i don't think it rivals sabbath. They try to be heavy, they use tons of distortion with drop tuned guitars. Sabbath on the other hand is naturally heavy, they are heavy without the drop tuning and the distortion and the pig squeals and growling, they just have a heavy mood about them.

I can't really explain it, it's just the mood of the song that is heavy, to me heavy is about the mood and what it feels like.
