This man is really hard to watch or listen to. He has an ugly speech defect and disgusting ticks. Oh yes,I forget that some consider him to be the sole living genius on earth. He is just a much better interpreter of Hegel and Lacan than anyone else in academia today, not because he is brilliant, but because the academia today is a den of morons, who know no better than to endlessly rehash what they read in secondary literature. Among the nice, conciliatory idiots,it's easy to be a prophet.
@ididete Instead of pointing out Zizke's accent and eccentricities, you need to examine yourself . It makes you sound ignorant even if you do have a good point about the academia.
But what do you think about the things said in this particular video? Or did you comment just to release some misdirected anger? I like his books because he engages in critical thinking, not because he is good at interpreting Lacan or Freud or Deleuze. I like what he says not because he is or isn't able to get through a speech without displaying tics but because his thought is unique and lacks the attractive facade that many famous people put on in order to enchant an audience.
@thepostnihilist You are right. My post was mainly a release of anger against the current academia and the way it works. But I also have a few things about Zizek himself. I hapen to have been born in former Yugoslavia, and that type of charm, by which he is enticing a great deal of Western Academy, is very well known to me, and it usually belongs to mafia guys. He is like Tony Soprano of a sort. As per Zizek thinking and writing itself, I agree that he is far more interesting than many . . .
@thepostnihilist than many other contemporary thinkers, but his thinking lacks the absolute courage I for example detect in Hegel or Kafka. IN other words, in my view, Zizek is seductantly (very) playing with the limit of courage without actually taking the responsibility to cross it. Take a listen to his speech (available on google) called "Maybe we just need another chicken". He barefaces all the hidden ideology and hypocrisy of contemporary society. When a person from the audience. . .
@thepostnihilist when a person from the audience asked him "well, what should we do about this?" he answers "well, maybe we need another, more credible tool of ideologization". In other words, he doesn't DARE to even think what the world would be without ideology. And I know why. Because when you start thinking in that direction, you are bound to say many more unpleasant things than he currently does, and feel unpleasant yourself, which he is definitely not able to.
@thepostnihilist He prefers this actual, stupid ideological world to its alternative, even though he is clearly able to see its mechanism. He sees its mechanism, but he doesn't dare see its ignominy. Because if he did, I believe his supermodel wife (30 years his junior) would no longer find him attractive. As a true thinker, you can't really knock models down you know. Only as a vain seducer you can.
Brilliant! I am in awe. Thank you for that insight. I must admit that because I like him I intentionally push his imperfections under the rug. But your analysis is on point.
@ididete Perhaps the reason why Zizek does not strongly suggest an alternative ideology is because he takes on the role of a social-psychoanalyst. Like a true psychoanalyst, he tries to avoid filling us with his own ideologies while presenting society in the way that we can identify and correct the problems ourselves.
A classless, monyless, stateless communities of humanity in cooperation to take care of our needs and well being , expressing our creative energies in freedom of being. Capitalism is the manipulation of resources and technology for the private gain of a few in a monetary system that enslaves immense humanity in wage slavery of useless employment system that dehumanises and denies our human creative potential for a world of harmony within and without.
Wow, not a single comment on topic here. Is anyone even slightly interested by his assumption that external traumas refer to prior internal traumas; or that if true, sex, being our original sin/trauma, is the object-cause of any and all external trauma?
@BoStevoD Then you gotta ask if you believe Freud... Do you think he was right when suggesting that people are afraid of dismemberment becoz it reminds them of castration? I personally think it might not be always true... If it is really it, then women should not be afraid of losing an arm or an eye since they are primarily 'castrated' in the first day (according to Freud)! I think Freud is somehow a paranoid -- he just wants to explain everything with sexuality and that's it.
His nose rubbing and shirt tugging might be a mold form of Tourette's. I know of people with it who sniff and adjust constantly. Sometimes it abates for a while when really focussed on something. Regardless, it makes him even more insanely great.
