yeah our government says it can not afford to keep schools and hospitals open it says it cant afford to build more frigates and destroyers, aircraft carriers and submarines, yet last year we gave hundreds of millions of pounds to India, and in that same week India purchased there first nuclear submarine, it seems our money is being given away to other country's so that they can have the power to destroy us, it makes me sick
I should qualify what i said earlier. I dont believe for a minute that the vast majortiy of the British public ever "allowed" their navy to deteriorate. I think the leaders did. That's whose asses should be kicked, right out of office, by the British people. Just my opinion. And I'm not saying the UK navy has to be like it was in the glory days, 60-70 years ago, but it should always be one of the top 3 or 4 navies in the world for numbers of ships. And that should include aircraft carriers.
Perhaps an English person can answer this: been hearing recently that UK ballistic missile subs will be dismantled & the nuclear deterrent force will be dis-continued. Is this true?
No, the government although it will perhaps reduce defence spending for the time being has stated that Trident as well as the Carriers will not be a part of those cuts.
It's possible we will reduce the amount of boats to 3, and reduce missiles since the US & Russia is doing likewise
Thank you! The new carriers in particular are sorely needed; just my opinion but UKs carrier force should never have been discontinued as it was in late '70's. Not an expert on UK defense policy at that time, probably things I dont know that affected the decision, but I remember thinking back then that this is not a good move.
Well hope they get it figured out, & the right way too. Far as i can tell from British history, the navy has always been their ace-in-the-hole. Just as true in 2009 as it was in centuries past & UK should always have a powerful navy. Dont mean its not powerful now, but think it should not keep getting reduced in size every year it seems.
we all hope that the navy remains just as glorious as it was back in the day, the navy is very weak at the moment i could tell yous storys which would make you cringe.
I dont think I would want to hear it; it would be too depressing. When I was growing up in 50's, 60's, , the UK navy was this awesome machine that could go anywhere anytime and kick ass on anybody & now it seems like they can barely defend their own coastline. I hope the people of UK kick some political ass for allowing it...
