Ridiculous criticism of Melinda! They married several years after they met; and she was against Landy just like the rest of the family. How many women would take on Brian's mental issues, no matter how much money he had? To this day, he hears voices in his head telling him he's no good and that they're going to kill him. Melinda said she could look at him and tell he was hearing voices. They have adopted several children together; Brian is happy and touring; and he thanks her for it.
When asked about Lyle's performance in an interview, Brian Wilson said, "I thought Lyle Lovett's version was the best version I ever heard, including the Beach Boys'. The most loving beautiful version I've ever heard. Unbelievable."
When I watch this, I feel like Lyle is singing the song to Brian. Any pop singer since the mid-60s could honestly sing to Brian Wilson, "God only knows what I'd be without you."
Proof that The Beach Boys music and the music of Brian Wilson has touched everyone and not just white people pay attention to Diana Ross through Brian's whole tribute. P.S. Little fact Brian Wilson is Diana Ross's long time celeb crush so cute to see both them together
Right on girl u got that she should be with all those poor little kids she bought.she looks like the devil with her red lipstick.Brian was better off with Marilyn who more of a real person and loved Brian before he had any money.
Melinda Wilson getting teary-eyed and lookedlike she was going to melt LOL Go home Melinda and watch all those kids you adopted and make Brian a sandwich you Blonde Goldigger who looks made of wax
@coolsweetgroovy you got that right Melinda does look like a wax figure with her devil red lips.i added a post myself.im glad some one else sees it like i do.she was just a car sales person who Landy introduced them hmmm sound like Brians being taken again where Landy finished.
But, having said all that, without the songwriters we couldn't have covers, a symbiotic relationship.
I feel truly blessed to have been present at the exit to a venue Brian had just played - someone invited me along saying we may just get to meet the great man - when one of the Wondermints came out and was asked to sign an original vinyl copy of Pet Sounds - he just looked at it and said, "No, he couldn't do that." Ethereal.
Also, every single version of Beethoven's & Mozart's compositions we know is a cover, and they were often written for single vituosi to perform, with great freedom called for in their approach. Exactly like this version of God Only Knows - there's nothing quite like it. And when Eric Clapton asked George Harrison how he wanted him to play the guitar solo on While My Guitar Gently Weeps (George after endless attempts felt he just couldn't do it justice), said .. (TBC)
I've just heard this for the first time, and thought, before reading Brian's comments, with tears in my eyes, that this is the most beautiful version of this song, Paul McCartney's all-time favourite composition, ever.
It's not uncommon for songwriters to praise covers as raising the bar on their own work; I've heard both Ben Harper and Burt Bacharach say this; and Bob Dylan once said that whenever he'd play All Along The Watchtower he felt he was covering Jimi Hendrix. (TBC)
I agree with you but as the composer of the song, he does enjoy an opinion. To me, this song will always be Carl and Brian. I think that Brian enjoyed the deep emotion and symplicity of it. For those reasons, I agree it's a beautiful rendition, but doesn't come near to Carl.
I am a fan of lovett and i think he does a great job and I certainly respect Wilson's opinion. In my view, the best version that I"ve heard lately is off a 2007 album by Bill Medley (Rightous Brothers). It features Medley, Phil Everly (Everly Brothers) and Brian Wilson himself. As of now, it's posted on youtube. Check it out.
Lyle never fails to make a song his. And I agree not trying to replace Brian just a beautiful redintion of. I thought it wasd great. He also teams up with Al Green on youtube for a song that is awesome!!!! People open your minds and your ears will follow!!!
I sat on my sofa and wept during this version from Lyle Lovett so vunerable and watching Brians face! Wow, also the childrens choir was so moving..He deserves so much and more.
it's one interpretation. i liked it. i like carl's better but it's different. poignant. the whole affair for brian was great. the beach balls, the children's choir - everyone there seemed to love the moment and love brian and it choked me up.
exualmet - Sorry you didn't enjoy this. However, it's a TRIBUTE, not a replacement. Lyle was not trying to take anything away from Brian and Carl but was honoring them by doing this song.
Sorry you like Lyle Lovett, and even more sorry that you do not allow freedom of speech. I didnt realize youtube was a communist state.. sorrier for you jackass..
TOO SHORT! Haw Lyle pleaaase you could've just done 10 minutes of this and we'd love it :'(

Because insufficient numbers or Mexicans were present for this expression of Americana, it was racist.

I'm not a Lovett fan, but this is a very touching tribute to a very kind and fragile man. Take it as it is. Brian enjoyed it, that says it all.

@hoppercap You don't get to say Brian is wrong! You can only disagree (as I do--for me, Lyle doesn't touch Carl or Brian singing this song).
