Force the government to withdraw its hand, not force its touch on our lives stronger.
It's not that Republicans are much better, but the policy changes that can be achieved by shaking off the shackles of the Democratic party would be exponentially better, in my humble opinion.
Think... Wouldn't it be better to have tax breaks, regulation removed, and doors opened for African American private enterprise as opposed to everyone having to rely on a union to earn decent wages? Doesn't everyone want to be self sufficient?
A welfare state causes everyone to be under the yoke of government enslavement. I know that black political leadership keeps calling for equality. The only measure of equality left to reach is financial. Impoverished urban black communities are a travesty in a nation with such wealth. But I contend that Democrats have designed a system of oppression for African Americans and are not advocates for the future prosperity of the black community.
I'm wondering if it has ever occurred to Black Political leadership in America to dump the Democratic party which has been a hidden haven for racist and corrupt politicians (in a greater degree), and vote Republican. What if this November Congress and the Senate were filled with Republicans by black votes. Then, Black political leadership, instead of demanding spreading the wealth said, "Get the hell out of the way of the African American."
Obama is only 1/8 black! He's 1/2 white and 3/8 Arabic. For those educated in today's public skools, 1/8 + 3/8 + 1/2 DOES equal ONE.
I completely understand DG's frustration, even though I'm lily white. I understand that he must speak to the crowd and the topic at hand. I hope he knows that whites unfairly discriminate against each other, too.

@beowulven I don't say that things are as bad as they were in 1967, no one can deny that a lot of progress has been made. We're talking about the definition of a word, however, not the relative relevance of that word as it applies to particular time in history. I find it upsetting that I am lumped into the common stereotype of the "racist white guy." I come from a line of hard-nosed Pittsburgh steel workers and coal miners. Neither are glamorous or well paying jobs. It may be a different kind of adversity, but it is adversity none the less. My family may have come from Germany, but I am still an American. I am not a "German-American," there is no such thing. Nor is there an "African-American." In my opinion we are all simply Americans: no hyphens.

Doesn't it almost seem counter-intuitive that a group who desires to be seen as equal hosts a "State of the Black Union?" I was unaware of the existence of a Black Union. In school I was only informed of the "United" States.
As far as my genealogy goes, I am German and Croatian. In 1865, the end of the Civil War, 35.2 million people lived in America. By 1925 there were 114.2 million. My family immigrated after the Civil War, thus after slavery. I was born in 1991, after the Civil rights movement
