  • Not sure why this guy and a hell of a lot of others are saying that jewel cichlids are "mean"(bellicose). This is false. In fact, they are one of the more peaceful species of cichlids and can easily be kept in a properly sized community tank (if they aren't breeding) with tetras, barbs, etc. as long as they aren't so small that they can be eaten. I've been doing it for years.

  • Nice looking fish! How aggressive are they? Do you think one would get along with kribs and bushfish in a 55gal?

  • cool jewel cichlid i get two yesterday how long does it take for them to get full size

  • i have one . got em yesterday 1 inch and he was 5$. worth it never runs out of energy

  • thats badass how red urs r. r those bimaculatus. thats what i have n hes not even started on bein red yet, check out my vids

  • I just got two juvenile Jewel Cichlids today. Already they are proving to be very feisty. One swam like crazy making waves at the top of the tank. I was impressed. I have them in with a firemouth who seems to be holding his own.

  • i have a 24 x 12 x 16 tank, w/ 4 decor rocks and one plecothemus. i am planning on getting 2 blood parrots, and either one of these or a bumblebee african cichlid. which should i get?

  • @teddypain14 u wont regret gettin the jewel there badass

  • yea i never would have thought they were african because of how cool looking they are compared to most others but everything ive seen about them says that theyre african

  • Red Jewels are not from Africa. They are South American Cichlids

  • they are from africa.

  • You might wanna look up your facts because a jewel cichlid is a african . I actually thought the same thing and i researched it and sure enough its african , so look it up !

  • i found out a few weeks ago that they are west african cichlids, so calm your nerves.

I got confused coz the guy i bought them off said they were south american.

Days later i went back there and he made a mistake. He said they are west african but they live and behave like south american cichlids.

  • those are gorgeous, too bad they're assholes haha

  • how big r they?

  • Males have a steeper head and the females forehead/head is longer. It takes a trained eye.

  • Very Beautiful fish!

  • beutiful

  • These are my favorite out of all the cichlids such nice colors they have

  • How do you sex these fish? If you dont have 2 of them to compare with eachother, how would you do it? I got a 3 inch jewel but would like to know if its male or female. What do I need to look at and at what size?

  • Hi, yes take out one female, Only have one pair in a tank, Thanks from southAfricancichlids check my side sometime.

  • jewels r west african

  • Hi, I had two females and then obtained a male from my brother. Within a month a pair formed and fry were born. The other female would hang out on the other side of the tank with no color. Today, the 3rd wheel female is now paired with the male and the fry are all gone. Do they change partners, and do you think one female needs to be taken out?

  • hi there, i have 4 of these all around 2 inches. I'm waiting for 2 to pair off then i will get rid of the remaining 2. Any idea how long it'll be before they start to pair off / breed? At what size do they start to mature? Any chance of a PM with the info? Cheers

  • The most difficult part in breeding the Jewel Cichlid is finding a compatible pair. This is easiest done by obtaining a group of youngsters and waiting until they pair up. Often this is a slow and arduous process. Once a pair is established, they should be moved to their own tank. Be sure to provide plenty of hiding places for the female.

  • mine started out cherry red.

then, recently, he went brown. then all of a sudden, he turned bright purple on his side with a chocolate brown head! his blue spots stayed normal the whole time. anyone know what the hell happened?!?!

  • The upper part of the body is light olive green while the lower part is red or orange. The lips are usually bright red as are the cheeks and lower jaw. In this area are small iridescent spots that are yellow to turquoise in coloration.

  • i have some of these guys and was wondering if there is a certain temp that they need to breed? it seems like the female has eggs in her but wont spawn yet. or are they just not ready yet?

  • They Prefers Temp around 76 to 82

plus I use well water in Florida with is hard water

  • k thanks

  • Hi, the male is bigger than the female but, it takes times to see the difference

  • i have two of these i think but i cant differentiate between a male and a female.

  • Hi, the male is bigger than the female wen they are adutls.
