  • How do you do the joining in the round? Do you just add an extra stitch at the end and slip the first stitch over it?

  • @Randi1988 I haven't tried this cast on yet so I'm not sure, but it should be no different then casting on to a single dbl needle then dividing your stitches as needed on to 2-3 needles and join as normal.

  • Love this video tutorial! Very well done.

  • this is awesome; definitely will have to try this on my next top down socks.

  • Very smart. Thanks for sharing!

  • Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! This really helped me a lot!

  • Now if only this mongrelization were a *knitted* cast-on; then the label would be correct and knitters looking for a non-hybrid cast on wouldn't have their time wasted watching this crochet technique.

  • EXCELLENT! Thank you!!!

  • Thanks so much. This looks like a wonderfully stretchy cast onl.

  • @724sjm - thanks so much, I'm glad it was helpful. I'm a little confused though, this is the only video I've gotten around to ding so far, someone else deserves your kudos for the pouch - I'm curious now, what pouch video are you thinking of?

  • IN-credible!!!!

  • @ebisoddsandends - Thanks! :o)

  • This is truly a lifesaver! I've been trying to learn the other provisional cast-ons and I can't even get through the first stitch after the slip knot. Will definitely use this for the cardigan I'll be working on :)

  • Hooray! I have been trying to just cast on for ribbing by using one size larger needles. This just makes my cast on edge loose, not stretchy. I stumbled onto this vid by accident, while searching for directions for provisional cast on using elastic. Still can't find that one!

  • I was searching for this video in my favorites, thinking that it was a stretchy bind off, I'm knitting fingerless mitts, and after binding off, it was much too tight. I'm using sock yarn, the tention is fine for the mitts, it's just the bind off that gets too tight. Do you think I can use this method to bind off, and if not, can you tell me what to do to get a stretchier bind off? Thanks so much~ Dora :)

  • Yes, it works just as well as a bind-off. I do it a lot, especially since I knit socks from the toe-up. As mentioned, you can adjust how stretchy by adding the chain in between bound off stitches only as needed. When I put a chain between each bound off stitch in a 2x2 rib, I get a ruffle at the top when the sock is at rest, on my foot it looks normal. For a scarf, you can add a chain between every 2nd, 3rd, or even 4th bound off stitch to control the amount of stretch. Have fun!

  • this video was a lot more helpful than the pictures i found on google!

i wanted to knit a scarf for someone for christmas and i have been trying many original ways to cast on because i completely forgot!

thank you so much for this video! very well explained and showed.

  • Will the size of crochet hook make the chain smaller between the cast on stitches? My comment is the second one above. However I just happened to think about the size crochet hook.

  • Thanks so much, I'm glad the cast-on vid was a help. And to answer your 2nd comment/question; yes, the size of the hook will change the amount of stretch or "ruffle" you get. Using a larger hook and a chain between every cast-on stitch will actually give you a "lettuce" ruffle edge. Have fun!

  • My goodness! I tried all the other "stretchy" cast ons and couldn't catch on. Thanks to you and your crochet needle, I CAN!

And after doing your cast on, I'm knitting a three-row (reversible) scarf. THANKS AGAIN!

  • And I notice that not every added stitch must be given an extra chain. Every other stitch works well too.

Don't want to have the cast ons too stretchy!

  • Thank you so very much! i have been looking for a very stretchy cast on for knitting wide socks. smiles, grace
