This short film is fantastic. You captured Mr. Ray's persona very well. I laughed so hard I cried when Mr. Koethe came by with his "hard cheese Mr. Burns" line--hilarious. The music selection really makes the film great. The subtle sound effects remind me of what John Lurie did in his "Fishing with John" series. A fantastic little piece. Thank you for uploading it.
This would be cute if it were not a high school, in light of horrific violence and shootings on High school campuses one would think that these teachers would have been more responsible. I went to high school with Brewster and am taken aback by this video.
@Furkin44 The video was shot in 1999, before the Columbine massacre. I was a young filmmaker and high school student who was attempting to process the Scorsese films I'd been watching, particularly Taxi Driver, and attempt to imitate the master while doing something that was satirical and relevant. I was also taking concepts that my real-life history teacher used to talk about and exaggerate them into an extreme scenario. (cont)
@weepingprophet My apologies for being so harsh, I see the satirical and I think you did a good job but I would say that you may have captured a bit of Tarentino rather than Scorsesee. However, I continue to stand by my position that the shooting scene was ill advised and your teacher's should have steered you in another direction and certainly not have participated. (I DO hope your in film school, you have promise.)
@Furkin44 Again, it's important to note that this video was made over a decade ago. It's not only pre-Columbine but pre-911. Times have changed rapidly. The gun involved was an authentic Civil War musket used for educational purposes, which is partly what inspired the idea.
I'm now a professional in his early 30s, and although I wouldn't presume to tell a teacher what would be proper now, I see no problem with what they did then. They knew my intent and it wasn't to be provocative.
History is a Judeo-Christian idea. The enlightenment secularized it. Hegel made it into a tool of the state. Marx co-opted it as a class struggle. And Post-Modernists noticed all this and came to the conclusion that historical truth is just something used by the powerful to maintain their power. The students responded by dropping out. Eventually they went back to a cyclical view like pagans and eastern religions have. Ford said, "History is bunk". We believed it.
It's a crying shame but it's because we have left out the main character- God. It is primarily "His" story. There is a providential history and there is a conspiratorial history of people who rebel against God. Education needs to be separated from the government and put back in the hands of the people, families, communities, churches, and synagogues. We have tried to pretend that all views are equal and they are not. We have resorted to the lowest common denominator. We have forced God out.
Wait wait wait...Amblivious? I think he said Amblivious (:51) Good gravy. Perhaps the sequel shall be titled "English Teacher" in which the fellow with the ponytail executes anyone who ends a sentence with a preposition.
WOW. the history teacher was the best. followed by the math teach, and well.... I bet you know in what order the actors should be placed, as subcribed by the level off their performance.
lol I like the cameo at 4:52 even if I don't know who he is lol.
I agree with everyone else, your videos are amazing. Great humor, and slick editing. I got caught up watching most of your stuff on Church of Blow, I will recommend it to friends. Keep posting, it;s inspiring.

These teachers took part in the video because they believed in me as a budding artist, and it was a very formative experience for me.
I'm now making a living as an artist and filmmaker, and I still feel indebted to these guys.

My history teacher had UPSIDE DOWN triangular teeth, so the point is in the gum. And all her siliva gets caught there. And she's always like:
"My giiiiiiirrrrrrlllls... At my oooootttthhhffffer schoool... BEHAAARRVE LIKE LADIES!!!"
So annoying.
And yeah. I didn't study AT ALL and got around 80% on my school cert. *preens*
