Lea Michele has the voice of THIS generation- we use very different techniques and have different voice trends. They're both amazing. On another note, it's also possible that they like Lea's better because it's the first one they heard. In my personal experience, I like covers better when I didn't know the originals first.

It's true, no one can beat Streisand, but i saw a live performance of Lea Michele's of this song and it was truly amazing!! They are both wonderful in different ways. Lea's not auto-tuned. Just try and watch the live version of Lea's :) there's one of it, when she sang a song too with Matthew Morrison. No offense 'kay ;) Both of them are great on their own way. Lea's just like the new generation of Barbra, and Barbra is the old generation of Lea.
ShermanWoof is exactly right. The enhancements in Barbra's best performances were acoustics, orchestra, and superb sound. No Auto-Tune required. This situation is like Elphaba on Wicked. There are many versions of Wicked & many talented women who played Elphie. Idina Menzel will always be the original Elphie & she does one hell of a job of it; however, Eden Espinosa who played in a later version of Wicked puts so much more passion into playing Elphie, some may say she's a better Elphie than Idina. Lea Michele puts a lot more passion into this song, which is why people love it more, but people still respect the original, Barbara.

Dear children , in case you are unaware... Barbara is the original and the best. Lea Michele did a superb job at doing the cover of this song from the movie 'Funny Girl' . But nothing will compare to the ease of Barbaras voice and the energy she brings to this song. Try to base your musical opinions on more than just 3 minutes of 'Glee' - there's more auto-tune in that show than 'what you see is what you get' singing

Lea did do an awesome job but they aren't competing, so why do you have to join the fight about it by being less direct? Barbra has one of those golden voices like Sinatra -incredibly beautiful tone and amazing ability to convey emotion. If some people can outbelt either Barbra or Frank, it doesn't take away anything from their greatness. Having said that - wow! Lea Michele's version is AWESOME!

This situation is like Elphaba on Wicked. There are many versions of Wicked & many talented women who played Elphie. Idina Menzel will always be the original Elphie & she does one hell of a job of it; however, Eden Espinosa who played in a later version of Wicked puts so much more passion into playing Elphie, some may say she's a better Elphie than Idina. Lea Michele puts a lot more passion into this song, which is why people love it more, but people still respect the original, Barbara.

I've seen Wicked and you cannot compare the situations. This is Barbra's song, she did it first and she did it best. Lea can't breathe properly while singing and gasps for air. Barbra's singing is absolutely effortless and seamfree. There is no contest.

You said that the situation was like the singers in Wicked etc. I don't agree, you cannot compare the two SITUATIONS. Firstly, Funny Girl, with Babs, was a Broadway show in 1964 and then a film in 68. Barbra sang this song in both, so it's difficult NOT to associate her with it. Elphie can be played by anyone.

It's a marvelous song sung by a great woman like Babs & Lea introduces the song to the new generation who haven't heard it before, like they did with many songs sung on Glee. Whether which version is "better" really isn't the point. Both are great to me. And that is true, but Idina is still the first and original Elphie & I've seen other versions & I still don't think of anyone else but Idina.

Just because Babera is so successful and renowned for being brilliant, doesn't mean everything she does is the best. Not saying Babera isn't great, because she is, but Lea did an amazing job on this song, and in my opinion sung it better.

I agree! How can anyone compare Barbra to Lea?? None of these women share similiarites at all. First off Barbra has a way better voice with more range whereas Lea's singing sounds like a voice that I've heard before. NO ONE sounds like Barbra! She is one of a kind and that is what makes her unique and different. I heard a voice like Lea's before; she's not different. There is nothing that sets her apart from the other voices out there.

Lea is AMAZING! Barbra is AMAZING! This song I personally thinks Lea does best, but not because she's a better singer. Because I feel that the new GLEE version of it sound like it has a deeper meaning - it sounds more like a real Broadway song to me.. Barbra does this version fantastic - they sounds like two different songs because of the rhythem :D

@ihd4x Don't forget, Lea Michelle, though INCREDIBLY talented, performed this in a studio, where her voice can be autotuned. What you've heard on Glee could be a collaboration of 20 different takes Lea Michelle performed. Barbara just did this song, in a faster tempo mind you, completely live and without the aid of studio tweaking; and though she's performed the song a million times, she got this performance right on the first try.
