I've got 11.04 as pendrivelinux and while unity3D works on my laptop; my tower didn't support it, so I'm using unity2D. I didn't realise 11.10 was out when I downloaded 11.04, but now I've got everything set up ....I think I'll stick with 11.04. Its certainly nice to try other OS' but I'm not going to replace the pre-installed versions of VistaHB and 7Pro that my tower and laptop are running nativly.
i have been using ubuntu 2d on 11.10 (dev branch) , and it is much better than ubuntu (compiz based). It is stable and has all that i need to work without any issue ! well done ..

Hated Unity: icons taking up space, can't be hidden like the Mac dock, more clicks to open apps, not all apps displayed in a drop-down...horrible. Will stop at 11.04 if Gnome is unavailable in 11.10.
@johnabdl7 I don't know in 11.04, but in 11.10 it hides automatically which is much better, have you tried it yet? Did you like it? I like it on my netbook, but on my other pc I have always used WindowMaker, so I'll stick with that.
Why? WHY would I want that? Why would I want my menu (file, edit, help etc) on TOP, disassociated from it's window? Who on EARTH thought that copying that interface (idea from Apple) was a good idea? What if you have to screens, huh? And you want to save? Move your curser across 2+ screens just to click file - save? Who honestly thinks this will improve the ease of use? It's all about being marginal, as well. Why do I need 48+ pixels of my screen taken up by icons? It's NOT NECESSARY.
@blender3dartist how about removing the need for clumsy, cluttered drop-down menus, period? they waste space and no longer use logic when grouping items. i say get rid of them.
I installed this os on netbook NB305 at first it looked great but the sytem is a bit slow and to search files it took a lot of time, for me a good operating system has to be very stable and secure then fast doing processes, i always test look for a file in the middle os about a thousand, and of course very good repositories.
Tried out opensuse 11.3 on the same netbook and the behavior is better, dont know if there is a better, fedora is very slow and poor in repositories.
Thanks for uploading this! I was initially VERY against Unity (and the Gnome 3 Shell), but I can see some potential here, given a bit of work. Personally, I think that if Canonical is going to go with Unity, they may as well use QT too. When I say QT, I mean a QT file manager, calculator, etc. Not KDE applications, but new and native "Unity" applications. While the Gnome shell is actually progressing nicely, GTK+ has truly fallen behind QT in every aspect of development.
@supercoolguyT They were probably just (correctly) recognising that Qt is more powerful, simpler, better supported by companies, looks nicer, and is more up-to date, as opposed to the obsolete GTK dinosaur.
@Woegjiub Granted true, but everything could've been with gtk. Now they will have to add lots of additional libraries even though they could've used existing ones. It's called bloating. GTK 3 is the future and it is aproaching.
I tried Natty Daily build of 3D Unity and it was also really fast with my crappy Intel video card,I am thinking of installing this on my grandma PC instead or regular Gnome.
Thanks for demonstrating this, Andrew. Interesting development. I wonder if many people will prefer it to regular Unity because it's faster-- even if they do have a capable graphics card.
@angularsofty Unity 3D will use Compiz, which is the reason many people started to use Linux so I guess most of those with capable video cards will go with Unity 3D. But we'll see. I'm thinking a poll regarding this will be nice once Ubuntu 11.04 is out.
Unity is pure crap. Horrible UI design. The buttons are placed in the most inconvenient places imaginable, so you keep pressing the wrong things. I'm really saddened by what Ubuntu has turned into.
@uni4dfx Haha, think what you like, kiddo. Today's youth seem far too preoccupied in determining whether someone is "trolling" or not, instead of stopping to think that, hey, some people have a different view. :)
@uni4dfx Maybe if you didn't act so childish, nobody would mistake you for a kid. ;)
You still haven't grasped that I have a different view on Unity than you do. I am not a troll for thinking that it works "perfectly", because it DOES work perfectly for me. I've enjoyed the mutter version and am looking forward to 11.04's version.
I'm done arguing with you, though; I'm sure you want to get the last word in... ;)

Maybe Shuttleworth is hinting that Ubuntu may not even need Gnome in future releases?????

This is cool. I can only imagine what they thought when they decided to go with Qt when gnome is gtk based.

I'm not a Ubuntu user, neither GNOME, but seems run fine.
QML and Qt is always a smart choice.

@uni4dfx Actually, I find that Unity is much more streamlined and works perfectly. I'm looking forward to using it, rather than panels or docks.
