  • I thank my uncle for sharing 80's music with me.

  • finding a way around decision

  • For a 13-year-old Rush fan it was a relatively short path to Icicle Works. Which led to Easterhouse, (early) U2, Bunnymen, Smiths. Thanks, mates.

  • Some marketing genius is going to have this song resurrected to celebrate the introduction of a new automobile just as Ford has shiney toy guns playing major tom for their new car. Imagine: whisper to a scream. What a great description for a car that hauls a**.

  • 80's purists will probably consider this some form of heresy.. but I bet someone redoing this in the same way Marilyn Manson redid Sweet Dreams would have a huge hit with it. This live version is actually quite a bit more aggressive than the version on their album.

  • @BasSpook

Agreed all around. And heck with puritanism!

  • I have the tape somewhere too. Great show. BTW they started out playing as a three piece, only adding a live keyboard player after touring the second album IIRC. I think they were better this way.

  • I've still got the vhs tape of this somewhere - I bought it in a record store Hereford, of all places.

It's pretty good, but spoiled by two things - the director's insistence of splicing in shots of clouds and helicopter passes over cliffs and oil rigs, and the band's insistence on playing as a three-piece, meaning Ian had to stop playing guitar to play the keys. Normally they had a keyboard player with, but not this show.

Still a good record of a hugely underrated band tho. I loved them....

  • @JJ62 yes i remember the show, with producer mike mansfield, i got dumped by a girl the night it was on and it was all very memorable. All except i don't know the title of the first track of the show with all the oil rig stuff.

It went 'here in seclusion...close to intrusion, my hope is pinned to the waves...'

Do you know the title of the track ? i've looked everywhere.

I hope you might be able to help.

    john.

  • @vegbloke - John, the first track of the show is called Conscience of Kings, and is the final track on the band's second album, The Small Price Of A Bicycle.

    HTH,

    Ian

  • @JJ62 Thankyou very much indeed. Listening now on Spotify.

  • this looks VERY familiar! i think i was there? what venue is this from? i think Wednesday Week or Let's Active opened the show?

  • boss tune.check out new liverpool band the lids.the happening and in dark dreams on youtube

  • What exactly is this song about? Regardless, I've always loved singing along to it, especially the chorus. It was a very melodic, sweeping quality to it.

  • These are some damn good musicians!!!

  • Thanx, one of my fav songs. Lived thru that era growing up as a teen, still cant get enuf of this music. So many generations after me need to flourish in this music to appreciate it as compared to the crap they play last 20 years

  • The drummer Chris Sharrock went on to play with the LAs, World Party and the easy money of Robbia Williams, a great drummer.

  • Fantastic vid. Amazing all the footage beyond promo videos that exists. Shame nobody's made a comprehensive 80s compilation.

    The drummer's in Oasis now!

  • them boys get thru there drummers like bog paper!

  • Wish I was there

  • I saw them too, at a small club in Berkeley, CA. At that time muy criteria was pretty simple - If a band had a weird name and was from the British Isles, I had to go see them. I saw so many great bands-of course Simple Minds, my all-time favorite from the first time they came to the U.S. Fantastic! These guys - fantastic live show. Still not on DVD? I loved the 80s so much, great music scene, wonderful memories!

  • Saw them in concert at the Whiskey a GO GO in Hollywood, CA. Awesome. This shows how great they were. Thanks for posting.

  • Wow, that must have been years ago. I saw them there too in 87. It was great back then (the 80's LA club scene). I'm 41, and I grew up in the perfect arena LA, for Indie music. I seen The Police, with only 50 people in the club. Ultra Vox, The Alarm. Big Country. Most, if not all of these bands played in small clubs in LA, the to the Shrine, or the Forum.

  • i have this LASER DISC and still play it.. its still not on DVD.. great concert .. awesome post

  • i love this ! thanks for posting !

  • Oh my go thanks so much for posting this. My son loves this track and was really disappointed that, having heard hi mum rave about it to him from the cradle onwards, the live version he heard was found somewhat lacking. Now I can show him how it was meant to be played.
