  • This is a complex discussion...

I don't think it's possible to avoid the over-promotion of these "super-channels." That's just how it is. However, I don't think there's any easy way to make a clear separation of "big YouTube" and "little YouTube." Any way you cut it, there's going to be an imbalance if everything stays together.

Last year I got into this weird twilight pseudo-partner trial thing because one of my oldest videos went viral... I'd hate to see a YouTube where that never happened.

  • You are sexy.

  • 14 minutes...and not once...did he say penis. Ladies and gentleman, a new record for Swifty.:)

  • I have not intrest to "get big" on youtube, but would be nice to get more in to the so called community.. Iw been been on youtube since 2007 and been making videos regulary for about a year now on my other channel for uploading videos.. So after all these years I really havent found the community that all youtubers speak so highly about.. So any advice to get more in the whole thing? I dont like the whole messaging "check out my channel" stuff :/

  • I AM A COOL CAT meow.

  • Honestly, I don't want to watch a larger then life person on Youtube. If I wanted to watch a larger then life person, I'd watch television. I watch Youtube so I can watch people I can relate too.

  • people joined old youtube , we did not join THIS website . therefore people will slowly lose interest . the rise and fall of youtube

  • Great video. You have such a good point. Although I don't make a lot of videos, I enjoy watching small YouTubers.

  • i totally know what your saying man. I talk to all my subscribers whenever possible and it is so hard to get noticed. I work and dig for every sub i get. I try to put as much professional stuff in my videos as possible. Lighting, costume design, etc. Thanks for using your voice to help us little guys.

  • I love you :3

  • Its all about money isn't it that's what youtube wants I don't like it gggrrr

  • What's wrong with the world today first the stupid acta law then this gosh were just a messed up place I think youtube should keep it the way it is its just fine how it is why are thay trying to change it

  • I just have to tell this.... I found you like ages ago when I was watching a video about gay emos, and your "I am gay" video was on the suggestions. So..... yeah.

  • Awesome video! i totally agree with you. everyone should be given an equal chance, not just the ones that have a greater status than someone else. we are all normal human beings... but its sad that its just coming down to how much one can make off of someone.

  • Great video. I agree :) and don't apologize for making long videos. You're real fans, like me, won't mind how long it is and will still watch it

  • If you don't want the "little man" to diminish then do something about it! You could mention a smaller youtuber that you truly enjoy watching every once in a while in one of these videos to help them gain viewers. You could help give the average joe a shot. There are a lot of people on here that deserve the spotlight, but probably will never get it because they are always out shined by the people making bank :/

  • I actually go to the school that Chad Hurley went to and had his mother as my homeroom teacher. It is sad that youtube since being bought by Google was changed from the creators original expectations and wants for the website.

  • I fully support you matt, no matter what you upload :)

  • im not getting paid for youtube im getting over 200 views a day on my videos i do guitar based videos i give people my guitar rig presets and give lesson and my music in on free download on my facebook and i give people promition to use my music in there video it helps me and helps them i give alot away on my channel and i can never find my videos in the search i just wish it was easy to show people what im doing but if what u say is true i dont think my video will ever get more view to help ppl

  • Also, youtubers should take control of Youtube, real youtubers should have a strong voice on what to do with the website

  • at least were not amish. they dont know what youtube is.

  • i think is sad that a lot of people ignore vlogs on youtube. A lot of people I know think that youtube is a place only for nicki minaj videos and funny cats... Youtube is a website to share a lot more than just professional videos

  • i just have to say one more thing, when you said that when people say "i have a cool cat" and other people say "i have a cool cat too". i say , "i did have a cool cat, then it died and then i was really sad, now i am looking for a new cool cat" sorry for this totally unrelated issue of mine. if any one reading this is from around boston then can they tell me where to get a sweet shelter cat that really needs to be saved and is good w/ dogs and other cats, and it needs to like being picked up.

  • @awethomical You can adopt from MSPCA. Those animals are usually sick or hurt and in need of a home. Google it! :)

  • ok i was extremely angry about ur "youtube" video but i have calmed down since then mostly because of time but this video is more calm also instead of u just shoving opinions down our throats.this video raises a question from me, when you say that youtube is taking back the opertunity to get paid for being on youtube what exactly do you mean by that? youtube like the people who write your pay checks or youtube the community doesnt like vloggers or people who post for their viewers & subscribers?

  • lol :D I watched this 2 times and both times(not in purpose:D) I was listening what you where saying, but looking somewhere else(at phone, comments)and heard "Look at me":D I got creeped out, but actually started to look in the eyes:D I do agree with you.I noticed that it's getting harder to find someone new, cause the suggestions for"recommended videos "is not the same.I like watching people vlog.Hearing their opinions and thoughts, I do like to upload videos too. I dont want that to just go:(

  • Pt. 2: Are there any other websites out there at the moment with a similar format to youtube? I know of things like Veoh, but it doesn't seem quite the same. Maybe other people would just have a better chance if they want to a different arena entirely.

  • I have no problem with making videos for the sake of making videos. But if I wanted to post it, and get very little response, then I would just skip the time and effort involved with editing/posting it. I'm not saying I would have to be a big youtuber or even a decent sized youtuber. I just want an audience that would be able to comment on, discuss, and critique my videos with me. But if things keep developing the way you were saying then I feel it's all for naught.

  • I was concentrating the whole time on this video then the second i look away you said "look at me"

I was like "Matt are you watching me"

  • video not "people" :)

  • LMAO I thought this people was called "the little man" because of Ray William Johnson xD

  • I would love to meet you, Mr. Brown.

  • I'm thankful I was able to stumble upon you Mr. Brown...by stumbling..you find the best things..

  • Hey. If it makes you feel better, I did stumble upon 2 youtubers that I watch now. They're TheGearsKeepTurning (he responds to comments ALL THE TIME.. I don't think I've ever posted a comment that he HASN'T responded to) and TylerOakley. :)

  • Half the people I'm subscribed to I found (a looonngg time ago) in the Featured section. People like you, livelavalive, meekakitty, Nanalew, Shane Dawson, and Charlie...etc. And now look at the featured. You never see youtubers featured anymore! Therefore I haven't found any new youtubers/vloggers. Unless, like you said, another youtuber mentions them in a video. :/

  • Hi, Swifty. I lost my Google Adsense account a few months ago. It is no problem for me, but many others who lost their accounts then might have difficulty continuing as video creators without the income. Google is a mix of good and evil. The big problems for entertainers who are in niche arenas came slowly over the past few decades when musicians were no longer controlling their music and actors and producers lost control of their crafts. Attorneys now make the decisions. You are right.

  • You are so right. There is a group of people who have all the money (ie: POWER) who, basically, run all of the corporations and most of the governments, therefore most of the world. You Tube WAS a free exchange of ideas. What that group most fears is free exchange of information, so they are infiltrating. They think of us as sheep to dumbly allow them to build a path to follow until we get to the slaughterhouse and realize it's too late. It's us to us to be vigilant. Thanks for this video.

  • Damn it I wish I had a video camera. D:

  • It's really upsetting that there are so many 'little men' who put a lot of work into their videos, put the appropriate tags and all that and yet have a very small chance of getting discovered. What i find even more upsetting is the thing that even if u really try to find people like that, it's hard because of that "barrier" of famous people and all those marketing channels....you have to "dig deeper"...in kind of way.I think It's kinda hard for both sides...I don't know, it's really messed up...

  • Thanks for this, Swifty. I have started to see hints of these changes too.

  • Whoa. I was looking away for a second right when you said "look at me". Legit made me jump. Lol. Great video. It's sad that great things get messed up by big business. =(

  • I think YouTube proved that they lost touch with their roots when they removed "Broadcast Yourself" from the logo in the upper left hand corner. :/

  • @AshesLovesMusic It's still there.

  • @sharpes123 No it isn't.

  • @AshesLovesMusic It is for me.

  • @sharpes123 It isn't for me or any of my friends. :P

  • @AshesLovesMusic Strange :O

  • I guess where you think YouTube is going is not where I think YouTube is going. I might do another response to this. Don't worry, I'll keep it short if I do. :P

  • @thegr8stever that would be awesome, but.....im sorry. its not where i "think" its pretty much a knowing. ive been in the top 100, i get beta into things alot, i get word of future things coming. ive also been with one of the largest networks on youtube. which are fully supported by youtube and we get "insider" info.

its not some random guess, its thing i have been told before by respectable sources. youtube has a problem with flipflopping, but they usually do what they want.

  • @thegr8stever and what they want is professional content they can market and support due to advertisers. and professional content INCLUDES being signed with networks and having web original content that has massive appeal.

so alot of the little people will never get the opportunity to "shine" or spark without some inside workings and planned effort by a group of chosen content providers.

  • We live in a messed up world, can it be fixed? It looks like it can only get worse!! Love you Matt :)

  • I agree.. I've had those dreams, I know how... hard it is, I have dreams where I work really hard on a video I put it up and I look at it and it's getting lots of attention.. I know that it's hardly ever going to happen, cause I'm just the "little guy" the small Youtuber, who's stood beside lot's of other small Youtubers. Thanks Swifty, for being true. <3

  • Could you create your own show promoting the stuff you like? like buck factor but a swifty factor? then you can discover those people for being themselves.. you have enough of a following to do that

  • I could not possibly agree more. So, your advice would be for us to just upload videos of whatever we want (following the terms & conditions of course)?

  • @yourdyingbreed yes, but interacting with your viewers, talking to them(comments, OR also making vlogs)

  • it's pausing at 6:32 and it wont let me play it from there... anyone else have this problem??

  • i don't want to be a joshmo!!

  • I wish more youtubers were like you.

  • When I was like,,,, 15 i tried making youtube videos to meet random ppl over the internet but i couldnt do it. talking to a camera made me feel retarded lol

  • @JoleeMckenzie its something you get used too :] trust me, it feels weird at first, but you'll adjust to it. youtubers have a connection with their camera. :]

  • I was thinking of giving a speech on YouTube in communications... and i think I know what i'm going to talk about now.

    thanks.

  • your livestream on younow was awesome i was always infront of you when you were in que and i was omg im so nervous i dont know what to do, but i overcame that because your just a normal person just like me. thanks for becoming a fan of me on younow you rock dude :)

  • @TheBoucherC haha thanks man! and sorry! lol thanks for letting me go live! :D

  • Yeah, all of their decisions seem to be pointing towards eliminating all social networking aspects to YouTube and trying to get people to use Google+ instead. Notice that they recently have decided to allow people to use nicknames/handles on Google+.

  • Dude, you do realise that I'm Romanian and I'll never be able to see one of your live shows, considering they're broadcasted at 3 a.m. ... Owww maaaan...!!! :(

  • @rockgodess18 :o well i can probably fix it to be some other times as well! :D

  • @MatthewBrianBrown Awesoooome! ^_^ Thank you!!!

  • YOUTUBE THE

    NEW MYSPACE :D

  • subscribe to my channel? lol if not its ok.. i am trying to make more vlogs and learn how to do it. haha just need support. XP your awesome and keep on keepin on!! :D greedy people are so messed up. :/ ~Laura

  • I get what you're saying, I don't really expect to be popular on YouTube, but I always thought it was just because of who I was and what I did, like I wasn't good enough and it's actually sad but I accepted it. What you're saying really makes sense, and like others im glad you elaborated more.

  • youtube has gone corporate like we said that would happen when google too this damn place over don't be evil well they are evil

  • I like how you cleared it up more. I understand what you are saying now. I love finding people on Youtube that love what they are doing and sometimes have about 20 subscribers but they don't give up, it's really inspiring and I admire them. I started unsubscribing (my own decision) from some of the bigger ones, I sort of felt cheated by them, I felt like they don't care about their viewers and just take take take.

  • I agree 100% Matt! and i love how you care about us so much! <3

  • @mcluv166 i care about people receiving equal opportunity to try and make something out of this whole experience. and its depressing to see it leaning heavily to one side or the other. :/

  • Also, if we want to keep the social networking aspect of YouTube relevant, I'll click through links and go through search bars, just to find people. I don't know about you guys, but that seems good to me. Maybe I'm just idealistic.

  • @metallknee9383 which will work to a certain extent, but alot of the REAL PEOPLE will be pushed super far back to make way for all the "big time vloggers" <- which will be mostly second channels for people. like this one.

  • I'll comment in 15 minutes, itll take awhile

  • *slow clap* I applaud this video as a "little man" on YouTube. I try to get my videos out there, but it's hard to get my name out there when I'm not supported by the website itself, and when it's so hard to find my content amongst all the big-time players who really don't need that kind of promotion. Then again, the big content makers are the ones who make the website the most money, so of course they get the nod over the little guy. It really does come down to the almighty dollar.

  • Did anyone notice his beard is back already XD

  • My content doesn't even get viewed...but that's ok, because what I do, or used to do, is pretty cool in my opinion. I don't need their support, I have myself for that.

  • @metallknee9383 thats awesome! and thats totally what its about, BUT its always nice to have support from others, but u dont have to RELY on it :)

  • @MatthewBrianBrown It is, it's very cool to see my stupid little GarageBand songs and my terrible singing to get a little more views every time I check...which isn't often. But I don't rely on gigantic community/monetary support, and neither do some of the best artists, or hell, the all-around best people I know.

  • @metallknee9383 agreed, but all im saying is its nice to have that opportunity, that opportunity to be able to take everything u do to a new level bc you are supported, that opportunity to blossom bc u were given the time of day.

but at the end of the day, i support videos in general, and i will upload them whether or not i get paid. its a place for me to go to meet new people and express myself.

  • I feel you bro.. Making a vlog Just talking to the camera is kinda "Rare" now.. Sometimes i even try to search for vlogs.. and a actual vlog from someone recent rarely comes up.

  • I think YouTube will lose so much if they decide to go that way. :(

  • love ya brah. always commenting on your shit. and id just liken to say that you always interest me n shit... and i always hope that your always happy with your life. and we should definately play some LoL sometimes. for the 50th time... hahah

  • @MrToiletclogger lmao IT WILL HAPPEN!

  • You are always right about pretty much everything. I love you Matt! <3

  • your videos can be any length i will watch it :D (not being a creeper >.>)

  • -3

  • So true. <3
