The Soviets messed up by interfering with religion in Afghanistan and Communists generals were seen forcing girls out of peoples' homes to marry their soldiers, and this was by force. Afghans do not accept such things. Afghans are very independent people and anyone forcing them to do something will not go away alive. Remember, read about Ashavakas (ancient Afghans), 95% were killed by Alexander.

The russian explanation up to this day is that Americans were moving into the region and muslim fuckheads were infecting neighboring soviet republics(Uzbekistan, Tagikistan, Turkmenistan). Both reasons happened to be true, whatever they were the main motivation is difficult to say. You remark about ice age and Afghans moving closer to the West are pure fantasy. Soviets were much closer to the West than cave dwellers of Afghanistan ever be.

Wrong numbers. Around 1 million AFghans were killed, and 99% of those were civilians. The Mujahedeen rarely got killed, because they were highly skilled. I remember one Mujahid kill 35 Russians. At least 75 thousand Soviets died. Afghans have big cocks, and Russians small.
