They haven't developed any new fighters or bombers for years. They may outnumber the Canadians in the air, but 40 of those clunker bombers may be no match for 2 Canadian F-18's. Might've violated airspace without much input from Vladmir Putin. His command of the Russian military is not quite assured.

I grew up during the cold war and this stuff was never reported. RAF jets where scrambled every day to intercept Soviet bear bombers. Quite often the bomber crew would wave and smile to the RAF pilots, even holding Coca Col cans. There was no animosity, just following orders, apparently some of them kept in contact after leaving the military.

@toqtaqiya Things are still chaotic in the Russian military. When the Soviet Union first broke up in 1992, Russian soldiers (and airmen) didn't see a paycheck for almost 10 years. They haven't developed any new fighters or bombers for years. They may outnumber the Canadians in the air, but 40 of those clunker bombers may be no match for 2 Canadian F-18's. Might've violated airspace without much input from Vladmir Putin. His command of the Russian military is not quite assured.

They do not have a cadre of tankers like we have to refuel their bombers to keep a mission going. They have tankers, but they are strictly task-organized for individual aircraft. That's just one instance as to why a major strategic project whould be difficult, at best, for them to carry out.

They co-ordinate aerial missions with the CAF whenever carrier borne forces require it--in most cases because the CF-18 is not carrier-rated. It is an arrangement that has worked well for years. Canadian fighter pilots train substantially in Pensacola, Fla., USA learning to fly the CF-18.

I grew up during the cold war and this stuff was never reported. RAF jets where scrambled every day to intercept Soviet bear bombers. Quite often the bomber crew would wave and smile to the RAF pilots, even holding Coca Col cans. There was no animosity, just following orders, apparently some of them kept in contact after leaving the military.
