As i understand it, Krypton's core (according to Jor-El) was made of uranium and became unstable, hence its explosion. By a quirk of science (unexplained in my time of the 60's), it became green kryptonite. Until receintly, it was harmless to us Earthlings; now it emits radiation that can affect us but not as quickly as it does Superman. In any case, lead will still block green k radiation. Thanx.
Before he was known as "Ted Baxter" from "The Mary Tyler Moore Show," Ted Knight gave many voices to the Filmation produced Superman and Batman cartoons. His voice talent were the narrator and other characters within the stories.
Kryponite causing cancer was not part of the "mythos" until the mid-1980s rewrite of the DC Comics Universe. This cartoon was made some 20 years before that.
So does Superman live in Smallville or Metropolis? Can someone please answer!

I loved how back in the day, Superboy/Superman could do anything.
Just because he has superpowers doesn't mean he has the skills and education to build a building.

I'll worry about that later. I've got to build an orphanage. :/

Because animation in the 40's were made for movie theatres , they had a bigger budget. 60's were made for TV only.

Bob Hastings of McHale's Navy and General Hospital (as well as the voice of Commissoner Gordon on Batman TAS) was the voice of Superboy.

Why is the animation so much cheaper than that of 1940s cartoons?

Prolonged exposure to Kryptonite can give humans cancer, it happened to Lex Luthor in the comics and Justice League cartoon.
