BUT if you work obliques, the oblique muscles expand, (like any other toned muscle), making you appear wider! No matter where or on which direction the muscle fibres go? As I understood it you should AVOID working obliques as visually you will appear wider. (that is if you are interested in the cosmetic effect). I believe in working muscles functionally so work everything anyway (and I am pretty flat, abdominally). Genes have a lot to do with everything too!
@catlawford Great question! I wish I had enough room here to answer it properly. I agree. Genetics play a huge role. Some people may probably never develop a "six-pack" tiny waist - I am one of those people. Not in my genetic make-up. However, building enough oblique muscle to increase your waist size and widen it as you say is HIGHLY unlikely. Most people have large waists NOT because of having over-developed oblique muscles, rather because of too much fat on top of a poorly toned midsection.
wow.. so interesting.. ur right. its interesting cause i have a twin sister and i mean we have the same body kinda.. i mean shes a lil slimmer than me but were pretty much alike, but she has a really slimmer waist line than i do. and all these time ive been crunching.. while shes wearing a corset... well plus she barely eats so shes skinnier than me. but long story short i got the abs she doesnt. she got the waist line i dont. =( hahhaha but i know what to work out now!
to everyone requesting a video showing a sampling of exercises that I'm talking about: I KNOW that I've been slacking on filming them. They are on my to-do list for next month for sure! Sorry for the delay. To be honest, I really didn't think there would be this much response for it! But I guess since there is such a huge lack of proper education in this area, there is also a huge potential for confusion on HOW to perform these exercises. Again, I apologize for the dealy..
@FusionFPDoylestown So any videos yet? This is great information, but I would like to see some demonstrations of what types of exercises that can be done to attain such results. Thank you!
@queridaxoxo Yes. Elbows up with arms out, using a cable or band. Use a variety of angles. Move slow. Thanks for your comment... glad I was able to help!
Hi that was awesome,I understand more now on how the muscles work.
I have a weak abdomenial wall resulting in a umblical hernia. Got this last pregnancy. I was wondering can I achieve results without causing further damage and pain. I need to control my expanded waistline it looks like sponge bob!lol
Sure you can! You just need to start at a level you can tolerate and then build up from there. Don't over-do. A little goes a long way. Start with basic floor stabilization exercises or Ball work in different positions: front, sides and back. Once you have a good base, you can progress into rotations. Again - start slow and at a level you can tolerate, don't over do it and build from there. Check with your doctor first. Thanks for your comment sasmomma!
Yes. Sideways crunches do work. But to maximize the 'waist-reducung' effect, you need to work the muscles responsible for rotating and twisting the torso too. They will give you more results. Thanks for your comment DavidZMetal!
I have a question.. Do you have any video or specific workout that effects lower oblique and side butt,, I want to reduce fat on that spot, dont know how..
Thanks for your comment! Yes. There is. Due to all the feedback I've gotten from this video, I will be making a part 2 with exercise demo's very soon. Be on the lookout for it.
THis video really made sense to me.. I'm a soccer player and I want to have a little smaller waist than what I have.. Now I know what kind of work out I need to do thanks
Great question! And the RIGHT answer is both simple and complex at the same time.
You basically want to focus on more rotational exercises using cables or bands from a wide variety of angles.
The problem is that if your core in NOT balanced, you'll feel those exercises mostly in your lower back. If that happens, you need to focus more on stability exercises and reduce the amount of work on those rotations.
Hope this helps. If you have any further questions, don't hesitate to ask....

OH MY GOODNESS, THANK YOUU!!!
I've been trying to get a smaller waist for months now.
And all I've done is sit-ups and crunches.
But, I wanted to know if you meant that we should just turn our torso back and forth with our elbows up for this exercise
Or if there were any other ways :)
