  • @hickok45 question i noticed you are constantly tightening the bolt on the end of the gas tube, does it loosin up after some rounds or are you just fidgeting?

  • Out of curiosity, how'd did it end up with a lock bar rear adjustment knob on it?

  • I live in NZ, how can I obtain one of these?? :-(

  • @TheMainMayn Why are you asking this on an american channel? Short answer: join a local rifle club, apply membership, apply for IPSC rifle in NZ. I'm willing to bet you're very young, you should find out stuff like this yourself. Be aware you have to be interested and highly active to apply for a license in NZ

  • @Mrjohnnyboy9889, thank you for your right for free speech! Our Country is one that everyone wants a piece of. A Country that needs protection from people that thrive on stealing, raping, and killing our way of life. Anyone who speaks against those rights is a waste of this Country's time. God bless our Country and especially our Snipers!!!

  • I can't quite remember, but is is safe to interchange 7.62 NATO/.308 Winchester in a semi-automatic rifle if it doesn't say? I heard that there was pressure differences between the two, but I'm not sure.

  • must have this gun. my favorite gun of all time

  • Lets see you shoot the SVT-40, please.

  • ty for video hickok

  • is it ok to go hunting with this rifle?

  • @HairyArabianWithAnAK depends on where you are, if you are aloud to hunt with a semi auto rifle then yes, unless you have a caliber restriction like "nothing larger than .243" but do not use full metal jacket rounds while hunting. aside from that yea you should be able to just check your local laws before trying it

  • @HairyArabianWithAnAK Yeap. I use it for deer hunting

  • After watching your videos, I really want to get one of these. Something about those nice big pointy .30 cal bullets in such a nice, easy to shoot platform.

  • 11:19...... Holy SH*T

  • when i get outta west point im tellin gen. dempsy to hook me up with an m14 as my weapon along with my m9

  • Don't think mexican's know about high powered rifles? Don't kid yourself buddy, internets be global. hehe

  • Everything I hear about Garands and m-14's is that they are huge and handle like shit. The .30-06 is an archaic cartrige. It belongs well with the M1919 and nothing more. In a modern engagement, something like a Hi Point carbine in 9mm is ideal. Also the .30 carbine has put a lot of holes in people just the same as a Garand. In a modern fast moving war the big rifles are just very old fashioned. The Garand is just a slow BAR.

  • @AugustusLarch Dude I have no idea what you are talking about. I am in the US Army as a paratrooper in a LRS company. I would KILL to carry a Garand or M14 over my M4 Carbine. They M14 handles like a dream, and combines reliability and accuracy. The majority of us in the military want something a little harder hitting.

  • @EHSPP16

Why not carry a FAL if you want downrange power? If you really want a negated sound disipline enviroment, go ahead and open up with the M-14. To stay in the low signature range, some operators stay with supressed 9mm weapons. If you absolutly need to engage fire more than 200 yards deep in indian country, methinks you haven't planned the mission well.

  • @AugustusLarch The FAL is not as reliable or accurate as the M14/M1 family of weapons. Not to mention the FAL has a few pounds of weight on the M14. As for a sound disciplined environment, that all goes away when shooting starts period. The only reason you fire in the type of situation I would be in is if you are discovered. LRS( Long Range Surveillance). Why would that be poorly planned? My perspective as an infantry man says to engage from a long range with superior accuracy and precision.

  • @EHSPP16

I know of operators that like to keep there mission as deniable as possible. That's task is easier if they try to engage with sub-weapons at very close range. The trend is going to low intensity conflicts. All the rifle caliber weapons are too huge to be very quiet.

  • @AugustusLarch They are heavy and don't handle the best, yes. They did however, offer the semi automatic firepower over the Axis who were armed with mostly bolt actions. Yes, the 30/06 and .308 are archaic cartridges. You can't be serious about the Hi 9mm comment? A 9mm is too weak for a combat rifle and not enough range.

  • @esh325

In the right hands a Hi point carbine is the type of surgical instrument well suited to small engagements. The weapon is easily noise supressed and is well suited to close engagements. There's situations that even call better for a .22 rimfire rifle, but a 9mm is reloadable and almost as quiet.

  • did they use the m1 garand or the m14 in Korea b/c my gramps has an m1 garand and he was in Korea

  • @TheMycrafters They used the M1 Garand. The M14 replaced the M1 Garand in 1958-1960.

  • @TheMycrafters By today's standards, yes, the M1 Garand and M14 are fairly large and heavy. However, back when the M1 Garand was in use in WWII the M1 Garand was one of the best rifles to be issued if not the best. The M14 was the answer to the problems the military faced in the Korean war with large numbers of fast moving enemies. The M14 didn't have much of a romance associated with it, because the M16 replaced it soon after it was issued.

  • I think this is the best rifle ever production made

  • Hey hickok why do keep testing the gas plug?

  • What's better than an m1 garand? A full auto m1 garand!!! Known as the m14. Still the m1a can take as much as 30 round mags. I work on a navy ship that has m14s for small arms.

  • this guy is the greatest shot ive ever seen with iron sights. he's got to be in his early 60ts but his eye sight is excellent. and so is his shot. gotta give him him his kudos. hands down.

  • NICE shooting!

  • what a great demonstration on the m1a. and what a great shot.

  • DAMN! nice shooting man!!

  • This guy can shoot!

  • That gun seems to be smoking.

  • Wow!

  • Damn Good shooting

  • What do you keep fooling with the gas piston retaining nut for? If it is loose, tighten it up properly and be done with it.

  • Hickok, I just have to say I honestly thank you for posting these videos. Nobody in my immediate family has ever been into guns I learned a lot of what I know from your videos and honestly belive you were the last straw to make me buy my first gun (Savage MKII). And now after watching this video about a thousand times I have just boughten my own M1A two days ago. EXPENSIVE, expecially for a college student but I can't wait for the 15th when I can pick that baby up.

    Thank you Hickok.

  • @AnAngryBlack I feel very much the same way. My family (aside from myself) is very against guns and think poorly of any firearms enthusiasts but I watch Hickok all the time and I love it.

  • @AnAngryBlack Im a freshman in college and have been trying to get a rifle also. Not an expensive M1 but something under 200 bucks. Of course im probably gonna have to get it of the street.

  • every thing in my brain tells me that the ar-10 platform is better (lighter, more modular, being adopted by military as spotter's rifle) but every thing about the feel of this rifle tells me that it will never let me down

  • @snogs11 I've got both, and the AR10 is barely lighter. The AR10 has been around for years and the military hasn't made any move to replace the M14 with it. Heck, with all the money they've speant modernizing M14's, they could bought a few AR10's, but they didn't.

  • This my favorite gun, I'm hoping to get one someday.

  • My favorite gun of all time. It is expensive, but this rifle has the distinction of being worth every penny you pay for it and more. Not many things in this world give you more than you expect, but this rifle is one of them.

  • we need him on the mexican border

  • @MrJohnnyboy9889 your one rasist bastard....

  • @jayztable, not really.

  • @MrJohnnyboy9889 thats awful sir.

  • @MrJohnnyboy9889 we need you to go fuck your self puto.

  • @MrJohnnyboy9889 amen brother

  • @MrJohnnyboy9889 FUCK YOU!!!

  • @MrJohnnyboy9889 racist.

  • @6r4mx1904 No, more worried about our national security than racist

  • @MrJohnnyboy9889 yeah got that right but only poor mexicans cross the border illegally in search of a job

  • I went to the gun range a couple of weeks ago and shot this and it was pretty good not much recoil just loud.

  • @fateman30, No for two reasons. One, he's said he has never been in the military. Two, I assume the '45 part is his birth year, so it's impossible for him to be a WWII vet.

  • Yeah, I was kind of wondering about .308's going through cans. I once fired a .338 Lapau at some RC cans and they ricocheted every time. LOL

  • "Get off my lawn." Nice shooting.

  • @tjenkins83 lol

  • hmmm, i m kind of suprised by the accuracy

    nice vid

  • what do you think of a ebr stock?

  • damm got great percision and aiming and is he a us vet.? from ww2?

  • @fateman30 dude im pretty sure hes not from ww2

  • @fateman30

    maybe vietnam

  • These rifles are in use all over the Army, not just Specail Operations Teams. They are also in use by most of all the "Color Guards" in the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marnies, and Coast Guard. The ones we use in the Army are now designated as M14 EBR... I went through the Army's Armorer Course and we went through these. They were brought back mainly for the fight in Afghanistan because of the bigger distances we are fighting insurgents from. Wikipedia it, it'll tell you all you want to know!

  • I'm not extremely gun safe or anything... but isn't that a house he's aiming his gun at?

I can see my mom being all:

"DON'T SHOOT THE GUN TOWARDS THE HOUSE!"

  • @zerotankor No, it is not.

  • @zerotankor no its not a house

  • very nice gun and very nice shooting

  • Hickok, in your opinion would this be a good rifle for the imminent zombie apocalypse? I live in a city with a population of about 150,000.

  • I've shot both the Garand and M1a extensively and also just about every other semi auto military rifle in the .308 caliber and the M1a is the most comfortable and easiest to get accurate hits with. Great ergonomics.

  • army rangers still use that beautiful ladie....HOOAH!

  • Nice shooting!

  • Comment removed

  • a mean looking rifle..i've shot the garand...very cool and I shot a full score

  • best combat rifle ever, imo, and as usual, another great display of marksmanship

  • One of the best USA made rifles, PERIOD.

  • i want one of those so bad to add to my gun collection. i LOVE the actions on those so much

  • great demonstration. near and far targets with accuracy and on point. I have an M1A and love it. Can't beat the Fence Post, as my friends refer to it.

  • is it possible to have a 30- and higher round mag

  • I have a mini-14 RR in SS havent had any problems with it at all. But it does get Hot if I rapid fire it.

  • dang the m14 gets hot quick

  • is this a D.Z.S.G?

  • Watching this video sure makes me wish I was back home, so I can take my M1A out for some fun. I have a synthetic stock, but wish I had gotten a wood stock. Was there any issues when you put your M14 stock on your Springfield? I found one web site that has M14 surplus stocks "Freds M14 Stocks", there are many different choices of wood, is your stock walnut? Thanks.

  • So much cooler than a M4

  • my great grandpa was one of the thousands of americans who fought in ww2 and he is 200 from utah who is still alive he is 101 he says the garand cannot be beaten

but i beat him at a shooting match with an m1a ( m-14)

  • hickock45 is a badass old man unlike fpscommierussia

  • I first fired the Garand in ROTC in 1965. Drafted in late 1966 I was issued the M-14. The M-14 has fewer moving parts and a better gas valve. Plus a larger capacity magazine. One great feature of the M-14 is you don't have to worry about busting your thumb loading the rounds as with the Garand. They are both fantastic weapons. I remember easily popping targets out to 300 meters (900 feet) with both rifles using just open sights. Every time I see a raffle for either rifle I buy a ticket.

  • Have you shot the AR-10 or any variant?

I am deciding between an M1A,or AR10 for long range shooting.

I need pros and cons on either of them.

  • @stormryder4fr3 ar-10 vs m1a in a nutshell (this has been debated EVERYWHERE)

    M1a

a 2 moa gun if you plan on buying the standard version ( the loaded gets about 1.5-.75 moa the national match is about 1-.5 but .5 is pushing it and the 3000 dollar super match is a .5 moa gun)

more durable and tough than a tank it will fire under any condition nearly impossible to jam

    its expensive

    ar-10

    cheap

    moa accurate in most cases

    more fragile than porcelain

a huge amount of after-market accessories

  • @y3k23k thats retarded. ar15 are good up 500m and thAts if you are sitting their no pressure. The M14 can hit 1000m with ease.

who care about after market parts. the M1a is perfect as is. it doesnt need anything ells. and My M1a is a sub MOA gun so i dont know where you got 2 MOA. the ak47 is a 2 MOA.

so ill choose the More reliable more accurate more lethal M1a over the ar15 any day. you can keep your ar15 toy gun

  • @4everUSNavy first off i compared the m1a with the ar10. the ar10 is chambered in 308 winchester and the reason why it is more accurate inherently than an m1a is as follows: the standard ar10 utilizes a direct impingement gas system meaning that the length of the gas piston is significantly shorter than the length of the short stroke piston in the m1a ergo on the ar platform the barrel is free to move independently of the operating system but with proper bedding the m1a can be just as accurate

  • @4everUSNavy i also vastly prefer my m1a to my ar-10 if i had to give up all my guns but one id keep my m1 hands down. imo its the best rifle system ever. but i just like to be realistic with the platforms limitations.

  • where do you get all the guns ? do you buy them ?

  • Excellent video, thanks!

  • we also have our korean war vets who carried the garand

  • Damn you shoot that thing mighty fine from the shoulder. Good job

  • I saw the M 14s in a Police supply shop that had other goodies. They were identical and looked unfired. I didn't handle them as i was looking at a Sharps. LOL

  • I saw several of these in 308 Win. in mint shape, in a gun shop. Do you think $1,200.00 is a fair price ? Thanks

  • @sr633 New or nearly new that number sounds about average in todays market . Are they Springfield Armory manufactured receivers , or some other brand . Do the parts work well together & who put it together . What kind of parts was used to build them Were they real USGI or some other source ? All this makes a difference in the final price .

  • Your video's are awesome! I love watching you shoot stuff!

  • You got some serious marksman skill....

  • I would love to see you do a FAL review or shoot, or maybe a side by side w this baby..and explain if you think we should have went with this or the FAL like everyone else...anyways great video as always..

  • do u have minigun

  • Thats a beautiful rifle i wish they wernt so expensive so i could buy one

  • if u like the m14 u should watch full metal jacket

  • I don't want no teenage queen, I just want my M14!

I love rewatching these older videos.

  • thats what makes america great, when you can fire the M14 rifle in your back yard, here in the england you have trouble firing an air riflr without getting in trouble

  • your living the American dream hickock....

Just watch out for those "aces and eights!"

    Keep your powder dry!

  • This is one of the most powerful rifles especially the full auto one

  • istn the m1a an m14 with a shorter front part, or is that the socom version, well i dont know

  • Had one of those in the Army. Loved it. If I remember right the selector switch was where that circular indention near the center is. There was a gizmo that looked sort of like a roolerskate key that you would insert into this area to turn on full auto capabilities. Got to see a demonstration of full auto but they never atually let me fire full auto. Only thing I regret about the Army was they never let me fire a machine gun.

  • u should be banned..... for being too badass

  • I want that rifle. Great video.

  • its a beautiful rifle, and the only military grade rifle i like. i would love to own one, what is the price range for this gun? And how expensive are the rounds?

  • total how many guns do you own

  • Kudos to you Hickok! My M1A loaded should be here tomorrow. I'll be able to pick it up either tomorrow evening or Thursday evening. What kind of "grease" is recommended for the M1A? I understand that it uses grease and not lube.

  • in ever marine squad they have a designated marksmen who eather carrys a m16 or M14

  • You're too loose in the shoulder...

  • OOOOOOOOOOOOw

......caught that sight nut coming loose......crappy....cheap rifle.

Trust me, there are better ones out there.

  • You're a good off-hand rifleman....but, WHY do you keep reaching for the gas-cylinder?

    .....uh, it's a 7/16" hex nut....in case you were wondering....and if it's "finger-tight" it's wrong.

The M1A/M-14 gas system is not adjustable.....so, why 'ya trying to adjust it???

  • @Blago6actual If you keep it just finger tight it'll leak a bit of pressure & make for much less wear on the operating system . Not the military way but hey it works . With the prices of good M14 parts , that is what's left on the private/civilian market , it makes sense . If your in the field or shooting matches then you should probably get some shims & keep it tightened to spec .

  • That's some good shootin'!

    ...I own (2) Alan Baker-built M1As.....helluva rifle, that M-14!

  • my computers screen sucks so i couldnt see the close range targets in the beginning but every time he shot something fuckin exploded and i knew right where he was shooting lol

  • Great vid Hickok45, I've wanted an M1A since childhood. That's forty-plus years. I tried to quench my thirst with a Mini-14, but that just doesn't do it. I'm starting my fund to purchase now. I notice you keep going to your gas tube adjustment screw several times. Is that habit or does it loosen as you shoot? Same question for the rear sight screw? Thanks for the enjoyabe entertainment.

  • Hi hickok45, love your videos. The M14 was not just a Garand replacemnt, it was a replacement for a variety of weapons. Namely, the Thompson, the Garand, the BAR, and M1 Carbine. The US Military found it difficult to supply squads who use all these weapons and different ammunition. So they needed a general rifle for all infantrymen.

  • Comment removed

  • @iceteaguy gotch ya dude

  • Outstanding marksmanship, outstanding rifle. I only wish those targets were muslim terrorists.

  • The M14 is being used in some cases as a Sniper Rifle.

  • @razer440

I'm not an expert, nor am I an Soldier or Marine, so don't quote me on this, but I'm fairly sure that the M14 is primarily used as a designated marksman's rifle, rather than as a Sniper Rifle, THOUGH most designated marskmen tend to use an M16 with a scope attachment.

  • @iceteaguy I would bet its safe to say that is the case on both accounts, a marksman and sniper rifle.

  • Comment removed

  • @iceteaguy I didn't mean that the M14 is the only rifle being used as a sniper rifle, just one of several. I have a magazine that has an article on the M14 and in that article they say that the M14 is used in some cases as a sniper rifle. You don't have to have all the bells and whistles on a rifle to make it a sniper rifle. As far as making extensive mods for a scope, they have a scope mount that bolts right on.

  • @razer440 I wasn't suggesting that you were implying that it's the only sharp shooting rifle in the current wars that the US is engaged in. I'm just suggesting that it should not be called a Sniper Rifle because a Sniper would /probably/ prefer to use a rifle designed from the ground up for sniping, where a Designated Marksman could probably /easily/ handle the job with an M14 in DMR configuration.

Just because a rifle may be used as a sniper platform doesn't mean it's a sniper rifle.

  • @razer440

I think a more accurate term would be to simply refer to it as a M14 in DMR configuration.

The M14 is without some key features of most modern sniper rifles, such as an intentionally heavier barrel, an integrated bipod, or even the ability to mount a scope without considerable modification.

When the primary feature of a sniper rifle being accuracy at its core, it doesn't match up to sniper rifles like the popular M40, and M24. It wasn't designed to.

  • @iceteaguy hence why the us military was and is bringing m14s out of storage and using them in iraq and afghanistan. the m16 does not perform well in arctic and humid jungle climates unlike the m14 which performs well in all climates

  • @iceteaguy hence why the us military was and is bringing m14s out of storage and using them in iraq and afghanistan. the m16 does not perform well in arctic and humid jungle climates unlike the m14 which performs well in all climates

    and arid desert climates

  • Does your gas block plug tend to loosen up? I noticed you tightening it down after shooting, I've developed the same habit. I've gone by springfields recommendations and dressed the threads with some heavy duty grease and it still backs out after a few 20 round magazines.

  • There is no 5.56x39 but a Russian 5.45x39. It's just a necked down 7.62x39 round. The 5.56 is the NATO designation of .223 Remington as is 7.62x51 for the .308 Winchester. The differences are that the military loads are to a higher pressure and are strictly FMJ. You can however buy mil-spec loads with JHP or others bit the military only uses FMJ.

  • I thought that the 5.56x45 Nato was the military version of the .223 or is the 5.56x39 round the same as the .223?

  • What's your opinion about the weight and the length of the rifle? Is it cumbersome at all?

  • What do you think of the scout and socom 2 models? i own a socom 2 and love it. I was in the navy and would have loved to have one when boarding other ships. The shorter barrel is great for cqb. The only down side is the wieght.

  • The ground in and around those targets is now officially known as "No mans land" for all ants and micro-organisms lol

  • Would you ever like to have a class III full auto M14 rifle?

  • Do want!

  • I'm no military expert but I think they should have this as the standard issue rifle instead of the m4. I understand it is heavy and has alot more recoil but at standard combat distances 300-400 yards its not as if speed is an issue. plus alot of soldiers report enemy getting up and running away and sometimes continuing to fight after being shot with .223. Its a safe bet they wouldn't get up after being hit by .308 Just my two cents.

  • @6117240 Agreed with you man, I don't wanna trust my life to the 5.56. I hear that they have EBRs in SEAL teams and modified M14s in the Marine designated marksman positions, but the government decided that the M16 was the better gun for them to buy so it's not happening.

  • @6117240

Yeah, because they are using the 62 grain green tip ammo. The bullet is steel cored so any rounds they pop off, they end up punching clean through. No fragmentation, no jacket separation.

  • @6117240 The weight and length is the exact issue. Dont wanna enter a house with a squad of soldiers armed with M14s. Be smacking them into walls, not to mention the ammunition is heavier so the soldiers can carry less, and after you march all day you'll understand why the weight is really an issue. Even carrying an M16 for 10-12 hours starts to wear down your arms.

  • @darthfuzzel Excuse me, I meant the soldiers have to carry less ammunition.

  • @6117240 Not to mention it was in fact the standard issue rifle right before the M16 was introduced. It was just to heavy, to long, and frankly more than was needed. Nice thing about the .556 is that when it hits you it splits into pieces and spreads throughout your body. If you don't die from the first or seconds or third shot, your going to die soon from internal bleeding.

It is definitely a fine weapon and is still used by snipers and as a DMR, but for modern soldiers, its not the right one.

  • @6117240 M4 and M4A1's ballistic sucks! Plus the reliabilities of the short gas system increase wear on parts, and excessively putting more wear and tear on the rifle.

  • @6117240 bring back the 1911a1, springfield 1903, m1 garand, m-14, m1 a1 caribine, browning m1919, and browning automatic rifle and those bastards won't be able to limp down a 90 degree mountain

  • @6117240 Sorry to burst your bubble but standard combat distances, especially in cities are 50 - 100 yards max. Now, there are exceptions of course. In Afghanistan, especially in the mountains, many engagemants are 400 yards +, and that is the main reason why the Marines have brought it back in the form of the Mk14 EBR mod 1.

  • The military realized that in heavy engagements, soldiers tended to fire more with "quantity" in mind rather than "quality" and that was one main reason for going to the 5.56. Also, you can carry MUCH more ammunition with you with a 5.56mm instead of a 7.62mm. I do agree with you however, I love the m14 platform and the 7.62 round and would love to see the military go back to it. But when addressing many of the circumstances that come with battle, the 5.56 has more positives than negatives.

  • @fms661 While the M14 isn't a bad rifle, I think there are far better rifles out there today. 7mm's and 6mm's tend to whip the butt of a 7.62mm ballisticly.

  • @6117240 - Less ammo wasted too! "1 shot one kill"

  • The M1A rifle platform has one flaw - the bolt roller cam can pop off due to a cheap clip that holds them in place. That aside, it's a nice rifle.

  • Hey Hickok, what's your opinion of the ruger mini-14, which shares a lot of its design with the m-14 and garrand. i'm thinking about buying the tactical mini14 and your insight is always appreciated and respected.

  • @captainkaos131313, I want to like them, but it seems that everything I read points out how they are accurate only for the first few shots, and then they begin to spread out as the barrel heats. I also have read that it's not as bad with later models. A lot of people really like them, so it's probably not a big issue unless you're planning on going to war and engage in lots of firefights at distance! :-) The only other thing is, I think they will fire only the .223, not the 5.56X45 Nato.

  • @hickok45 Thanks again for your help. oh, the 2010 tactical is marked of their website as being capable of shooting .223 and 5.56x45.

    thanks again, love your videos!

  • @hickok45 - Mini-14's can handle mil-spec ammo easily. The older models with thinner barrels do heat up quickly but if you pace yourself, you can maintain 4" or less at 100yds.

  • @redlegagent , I'm glad to hear that.

  • @hickok45 I have the Mini-14 tactical and I love it. It can handle 5.56, and the accuracy is great, I usually fire out to around 150yds iron sights, never tried it with a scope.

  • The mini 14 has the basics of a m14 but the mini 14 is "mini" the caliber is 5.56 nato "223"rem . mine has a 5, 5 round clips and 1, 20 round clip.. it is a very good weapon

  • Darn good shooting!!! this guys is good, I couldn't hit water if I fell out of a boat. great review, I sure do enjoy your videos thanks
