This epitome of 60's Ren & Stimpy Chic. Sucks to be a comedian sometimes, even when you say something serious and heart-felt, people have a hard time taking you seriously, even when you're right.
Jerry Lewis tried to hire Stan as a comdy consultant on several occasions but Stan always politely turned him down. The reason was simple. Stan did not care for Jerry's overkill style of comedy, which was quite different from his. Stan knew when a joke was over while Jerry never did. Stan was also quite a humble guy in real life -- the polar opposite of Lewis.
I'm sure Lewis genuinely loved Stan Laurel. However, I understand that on the new Laurel and Hardy DVD set, Jerry makes some completely false statements about how the L&H partnership came to be that minimize Oliver Hardy, stating he was a laborer on the set when Stan "discovered" him. I can't understand how those who made this set allowed this to pass. The true story is widely known; Hardy was already making movies for four years before Stan got started. Best to take Lewis with a grain of salt.
@BigStar303 You are so right! Hardy was already with roach for years before stan came. This vid is a wonderful heartfelt sentiment-but laurel and hardy were BOTH geniuses. And from what Ive read, both wonderful people!
Stan made me laugh when I was a kid, and he still makes me laugh. How many people bring that much happiness to folk? Who says a bad word about Stan? 'nuff said.
@SongSwan I wouldn't say they loved life at all, what many simply do not realize is that many of these people, jerry included, were or are tormented souls. They are people who made comedy a way of escape to deal with the difficulty of their life.
@voiceofelijah2012 The tormented artist routine eh...we all have issues in life but not all of us can do what we love or much less make millions doing it....next you will tell me that money can't buy happiness,to which i will reply i never said it did,but working your life away doing something you can only tolerate for just enough to cover the bills doesn't buy happiness either, tormented in your trailer with nothing or tormented in your mansion with much,i'll take the latter
@SongSwan tell that to chris farley or john belushi or phil hartman. I've personally seen too much to believe that the price Hollywood offers is still too much of a high price to be paid for anyone. I've lived in that world, worked in that world and you can have it.
@voiceofelijah2012 There is no excuse for people who hit the lottery of life and are too self absorbed to appreciate it...the countless millions who live lives of obscurity, lonliness and drudgery yet still keep it together put to shame those who live lives of fame, fortune and admiration...Belushi and Farley were so self absorbed that they didn't realize the tremendous opportunity they had to do good things...Hartman was shot by a lunatic female so he doesn't count.
Lewis talks about Laurel appreciating "every breath of air," but if you watch "Stan Laurel & Oliver Hardy in 1956" you see the dude smoked like a chimney.
Another classic comedian, Jerry Lewis also made plenty of laughs for us 50's and 60's kids. Not only is Oliver Hardy and Stan Laurel heroes in my book, but so is Jerry Lewis.
@ToneSpectra stan laurel was born in 1890,in ulverston,england......clint eastwood,in 1930,in san francisco...40yrs after stan....stan's father was arthur jefferson, stan only had one daughter, lois, and a baby son, stanley robert, who died soon after birth....i don't know where this myth about him and clint being related came from...but it's NOT TRUE!!! [to be stan's dad, clint would have to be around 141 yrs old]
Very beautiful, Jerry. Stan does live forever in his films. Perhaps you could have said a few words about another beautiful human being as well - Oliver Hardy.
I HAVE NEVER SEEN A JERRY LEWIS MOVIE I HEAR WELL I DID SEE EDDIE MOVIES ABOUT A PROFESSOR THAT WAS NUTTY THOE SOME HOW I KNOW HOW ALL YOUR MOVIES ARE NOT BAD LIKE BUT ITS AMAZING MAYBE WHEN I WAS YOUNGER MY GRAND MOTHER AS I SAY THIS I SEE A FLASH AND I SEE YOUR MOVIES AND I SEEMY GRANDMA SITTING BY ME i Love You Jerry Lewis.

God, that's beautiful ... "they should have worked that out somehow ..." Stan Laurel always seems like such a lovely human being just from the films I've seen so it's great to hear someone actually verify that. As if I couldn't love Jer any more ... :)

When was this filmed, does anyone know?
gardenwife 3 months ago
@gardenwife
This must have been filmed at the time of Laurel's death in 1965 because of Jerry's eulogizing him. Buster Keaton died one year later, 1966.

What's truly sad for everyone who enjoys comedy, is that Jerry Lewis, unfortunately, won't live forever, either, except on DVDs and celluloid.
Jerry would deny this, but he's in the same league as Stan Laurel, and is equally worthy of the title, "Genius."
