GSP on the other hand back peddled and fought an overly safe fight, refusing to bang with Shields because he was so afraid being taken down. GSP's desire keep the belt at any price is losing me. And its one reason GSP ended up going to the hospital with a ruptured septum and an eye swollen shut.
As the fight wore on Shields kept coming forward doing damage with hard clean shots.

GSP lost the two last rounds BECAUSE his eye was fucked up, and you don't get ruptured septum without getting something (finger) in your eye. A normal punch would just shut the eye. @VeganMotorcyclePilot what? he shut down GSP's take downs? what fight did you watch? seriously ... it was GSP that stuffed shields take down attempts throughout the 1st-and 3rd, and when GSP chose to take him down he did when shield's threw lowzy kick's, jake shields had 2 chances to take GSP down when he caught his kicks and couldn't take down a one legged GSP.. shields was totally out classed on the feet i didin't see any successful kickboxing utilized by shield's every kick he threw missed.

@fasioletti Maybe on MTV.com, I saw the original, Shields fought 3 fights on the show and they were of course all mismatches. Even with the bullies wearing head gear and the fighters having shin pads.

Shields won the 4th and 5th rounds on the score cards, so he lost the fight 48-47 but he won a lot of new fans.
GSP on the other hand back peddled and fought an overly safe fight, refusing to bang with Shields because he was so afraid being taken down. GSP's desire keep the belt at any price is losing me. And its one reason GSP ended up going to the hospital with a ruptured septum and an eye swollen shut.
As the fight wore on Shields kept coming forward doing damage with hard clean shots.

@quizzach The punch that closed St Pierre's eye happened in the last 2 minutes of the 3rd, the knuckle of his left jab. Georges said he thought it was 2nd round in post fight interview. The punch that busted up his nose & caused the bleeding was a right cross in the 4th.

More important just look at GSP after the fight, bleeding behind the eye was swelling it shut, a ruptured septum had blood poring down his face, which was swollen & bruised around his cheek bones. He didn't look good in a close win.

@mixmaster2669 i guess u didnt acually see the fight but the injury came from a poke in the eye- not a punch. The only rounds Sheilds won were the ones GSP could not see out of his eye due to a poke. before the poke GSP completely dominated...people think it was close but it was only because of the poke in the eye which the ref didnt catch....just 2 of 3 judges called it 48-47, the other called it 50-45....just incase someone wanted the truth about the fight from a real fan/practisioner

Did you even watch the fight? I don't understand how comments like your get so many thumbs up... GSP lost the two last rounds BECAUSE his eye was fucked up, and you don't get ruptured septum without getting something (finger) in your eye. A normal punch would just shut the eye. I think his last few fights have been boring, but i didn't expect him to swing for the fences with only one functioning eye in the last rounds! He has too much to lose to just risk it all.

I think Jake did a good job, he shut GSP's attacks down, improved and proved his kickboxing is solid depiste claims, just has not had to use it much. By damage, Shields won. Im also glad that Jake did not act desparate shooting for tons of takedowns at the end when he was fine. At the same time I still would have liked him to have clinched, pulled guard or attempt submissions go all out a bit more to seal a win without judges, but it was very close. Respect, but he is capable of being ww champ!

@crackmunk his kicks looked lowzy and slow GSP was already out of range before shields even set up his kicks, in the 3rd round GSP stunned and knocked down shields with a head kick, and shields went to the ground trying shoot for GSP's leg immediately which was stuffed, shields looked hopeless at that point laying on his back except for mid 4th and 5th but at that point GSP was obviously fighting with 1 eye and he still weathered the storm like the champ that he is.

@crackmunk GSP took Shields down with 18 seconds, Jake worked GSP's ribs while slipping his hips into position for a sweep. Tried one more TD and Shields turned & took Georges leg and GSP had to fight hard to get back to his feet.
"The game plan was to stay far away from Shields to avoid his take downs" The reason GSP back peddled the whole fight. After Jake saw that Georges was never going to bang he started waving St Pierre to come meet him center cage.
He won the rest of the fight, 48-47

@mixmaster2669 i am not trying to take anything away from jake he is a great fighter but George did not back peddle the entire fight the entire match was a game of striking on the feet George out boxed shields through the 1st to 3rd round, once his eye got fucked up that's when he started back peddling more george even made shields do a 3 second chicken dance when he landed a punch to his temple, the later rounds 4 and 5 was when shields was starting to shine.

If Strikeforce allowed elbows on grounded opponents, Shields would have destroyed some faces and we would have needed blood donors. Against Daley he was mounted alot and Miller and Hendo would have likely reacted into submissions by giving up the back. He did finish Lawler, Daley, Thompson...quickly still! Vegetarian Power! Shields kick boxing is fine, he trains with Diaz and he doesnt throw it all behind each punch yet is great. He doesnt over committ to throwing wild punches or winding himself like Garcia and some others. I thought it was obvious he mostly uses his kicks and punches to set up his takedowns, grapping, wrestling and bjj. Cardio good Kampman is just good and the weight cut, he beat Condit and Okami in 1 night! GSP better be on or he will be knocked off. The life long Vegetarian will previal!
