She thought that he was the Angel of Music that her father had sent her, or in other words, the re-incarnation of her father. Raoul and Christine actually shared history as "child-hood sweethearts" when her father was still alive before ever meeting the Phantom. Study the damn literature.

@Kandarew i wouldn't call it an obsessive love, although i do get your point, she never truly belonged to the phantom, but she was enchanted by him, and that's the kind of love they shared, an enchantment, using music with in the musical, the phantoms love though it may seem obsessive is only that way because Christine is one of the few people who brings happiness to him, which is why in the end he lets her go, he realises he's only happy when she is, how can he be happy when his love isn't?
