  • Thumbs up if you are one of the few that know what this song is REALLY about

  • @MrJaybee61 DRUGS LIKE LSD

  • I am a long time Donovan fan and find a lot of these comments somewhat baffling. Some songs are place and time specific and some are more abstract and leave the interpretation up to the listener, this song for me is the latter, it`s a very mystical, dreamy song that will take every one who hears it to a different place. I love it

  • I thought he meant jersey as in jumper or pullover, cos it was bloody cold that thursday!

  • he wrote this song about Jersey CI because when he first landed on Jersey it was a Thursday back in 1965 - Jersey Thursday

  • @turbominicooper2 YES YOU ARE RIGHT AND ALSO IT IS WELL KNOWN THAT HE WAS SPIKED THERE !

  • JerseyBoy here!! This was my theme song before Thirsty Thursday at the Rutgers bars!!

  • As an American, I personally would not understand why anyone would sing about New Jersey anyways :T

  • Once again Donovan weaves his Lysergic magic carpet...Beautiful!!

  • wow, i would have never guessed this song was about jersey shore. that's pretty awesome!

  • @Pudder69

No, it's about the Isle of Jersey... near England.

  • Beautifull, he is a musical poet, & paints pictures with his words.

  • Beautifull, he is a musical poet, & paints pictures with his words.

  • When I listen to stuff like this I feel like 16 turning to 60 XDD I don't care though, I love Donovan...

  • It's about an ACID trip, dingus heads.

  • @kxosak Bollox !! It's fn poetry. Not everything imaginative is born out of drugs.

  • @kxosak CORRECT I HAVE BEEN TRYING TO TELL THEM THIS BUT THEY ARE THICK !

  • Gorgeous song, happy lyrics sung to a sad tune, love it so. Thank you.

  • @psychicoutlaw HAPPY LYRICS UGH ! ITS ABOUT AN ACID TRIP !

  • he's so cute. good song too

  • why don't you all stop cyberbitching and just listen!

  • i thought it was about his knitting....but i could be wrong.

  • @SuperMacenas thats "Season of the Witch" what with the picking up every stitch and what have you...;0)

  • @SuperMacenas WOW IS HE KNITTING IN THIS SONG AS WELL

  • THANKS RUSHMORE!

  • Donovan forgotten gem..a song he does NOT play in concert and has not for MANY years...this song has beautiful lyrics and this song is good for meditation and self reflection.

  • he was definitely writing about jersey shore, he was psychic

  • see donovan.ie for Donovan's current doings.

  • My dad loved this song and used to ask my big brother to play it for him all the time back in the day. Back then I was like 7 or 8 and I used to think it said "Jersday Thursday" If my dad knew what it was really about he probably would have never listened to it lol. Brings back lots of old memories.

  • @MrJaybee61 What do you think it's about? And why would your father not have listened to it? I bought the album when it came out, but I confess that this and another song defied my ability to interpret it ...

  • @yamex5 Its about dropping window pane acid and tripping. The "tiny piece of colored glass" that gave birth to his "love" is a reference to window pane LSD.

  • @MrJaybee61 YES BUT HE WAS SPIKED WHEN HE WAS OVER THERE !

  • @yamex5 WHAT WAS THE OTHER SONG THEN !

  • wow...maybe the best 2 minutes and 14 seconds of my life. Made me feel like never before, very intense

  • YO YOU GOTTA BEAT UP THIS BEAT AIGHT, I DONT REPRESENT ALL ITALIANS, I REPRESENT MYSELF, JERSEY SHORE AT 8 THURSDAAAAAYS CANT WAIT AIGHT YO

  • YEAH BOI ERRDAY I TEAR SHIT UP AT THE CLUB TO THESE BEATS!!!!

THIS AINT NOTHING NEW, CHECK IT!!

  • @GenitallyChallenged Sorry do disabuse you guys, but Donavan was obviously singing about the Isle of Jersey not the dump in the US, he probably had not even traveled to the States at this time.

  • Comment removed

  • @simlaw10 Shhh you will spoil their fun. lmao

  • @simlaw10 I lived in a couple states and that"dump" is the best state.I even have a tattoo of New Jersey

  • @simlaw10 its about jersey island off england not shitty new jersey don recorded this before he went to the states

  • @lestaleky YOU ARE SO STUPID

  • @simlaw10 Go fuck yourself. Regards from New Jersey.

  • @K20ej88 OK, I have fucked myself but NJ is still a dump (I Live here too) and you apparently, are a republican asshole. Still when you grow up and see what the rest of the world is like you might get better.

  • @simlaw10 Actually I'm a Libertarian asshole ( not that you would know the difference ). I've actually seen the rest of the world; most of it is undeveloped, and lives in grinding poverty. Anyway I've been to Jersey. It basically amounts to a giant rock reef where old people retire to that has no culture, shitty food, and a grand total of ...wait for it... one newspaper. Maybe when you grow up you'll have whole thoughts that actually make sense. In the meantime keep posting videos of cats.

  • @K20ej88 Well you are correct in your comment that libertarians are assholes. Also I too have been to Jersey and having one paper is not terrible for an island with a population about one third of Newark.

Also I would suggest you go and see even more of the world and you will find to your amazement that most countries outside of Africa are becoming far better than the US due to investment in their infrastructure by far sighted governments, not that a libertarian would understand that.

  • @simlaw10 Funny NJ has this reputation for being a dump. Probably for the part that borders NYC. Most of NJ is undeveloped wilderness as is the US as a whole.

  • @simlaw10 fab song so sensual sand sea and d',s image what more do you want

  • @simlaw10 sorry to disillusion you but don was singing about the US jeresey cos when he toured there someone spiked him and this song is all about that incident !

  • @whittingham4665 Actualy, he released this song in 1965 and did not go to the US until 1967 as he was not allowed in before this due to DRUG busts in the UK!

  • @simlaw10 totally wrong he went to the states 65 with his managment on a business come pleasure trip and his drug bust was much later in his flower power era ! this info comes from pat hehirs his one time manager and producer he told me via letter when we used to write to each other for ten years or so when he used to run donovans friends magazine....john

  • @whittingham4665 OK new info. for me thanks.

  • @simlaw10 thats okay my friend, i bet there's loads of info you could give me that i dont know ...i would wecome it if you did i just like talking about don and his music anyway all the best toyou john

  • @GenitallyChallenged You sir need to be lined up against a wall with the entire cast and shot from the knees up till the one finds the spot right between your eyes, I say good day sir.

  • @GenitallyChallenged GenitallyChallenged???? ....... Surely it must be SeverelyMentalyChallenged??

  • Comment removed

  • @GenitallyChallenged So, where's the 'humour' in all of this 18 year old's scribblings? And why would anyone of your age or older find genitalia 'funny'? Unless, of course yours is in some way strange.....is that what you meant? You have some deformity in that regard? As for my omission of an 'L' ..... are you the one person in the world never to have made a mistake? I've spent too much time already addressing your points. Do the world a favour sonny .....grow up !!!!!!!!

  • Comment removed

  • @GenitallyChallenged Brevity is the essence of wit ..... shit.

  • @heehawluck1 ***Brevity is the SOUL of wit... close though

  • @GenitallyChallenged Not in my country sonny......I say again..... brevity is the essence of wit....shit.

  • Comment removed

  • @heehawluck1 jesus christ, i just looked at your channel and realized im talking to a 50 year old who is getting into internet arguments with an 18 year old. you need to get a life. have a good one, grandpa.

  • @GenitallyChallenged 57 to be accurate sonny. You have made much of your age in your arguments, that must be the 3rd reply where you mention it. Do you feel out of your depth? Insecure within yourself? LOL I wouldn't see you in my way boy. Go and pick an argument with someone your own age...and one equally inept. LOL

  • @heehawluck1 twice to be accurate. the first time was to explain why i, along with most young people, think genitallychallenged is a funny username. the second time was to show how truely uneducated you are, arguing with a kid. at least you can count... and yes, im extremely insecure, thats why i mentioned my age in a comment hahaha. no, i wont argue with someone my own age, because unlike you, i dont look through youtube comments and jump on every opportunity to start one. and again, get a life

  • @GenitallyChallenged Shows how 'uneducated' you are sonny ......... it's you who's arguing with me. For once in your brief life kid........get it right !! OK? LOL

  • @heehawluck1 hahahahahaha if i commented first, how in the world did i start this? think about it old man

  • @GenitallyChallenged I am 57......you are 18....it's obvious that I commented waayyyyy before you did. So. don't be so silly sonny. LOL

  • @heehawluck1 hahahaha that makes sense

  • @GenitallyChallenged Thanks kid ......I enjoyed all that....nothing better than a idiotic argument over not a lot.

    You take care.....sonny. LOL

  • @GenitallyChallenged

i dont think your username is funny and im 16...guess im not most young people

  • @beatleman17 i know for a fact youre not most young people. i dont know anybody around my age that listens to donovan or that '1979 France' video you liked on your channel. the last guy that argued with me about my comment on here was 57 years old, he listens to donovan as well. i dont think a 16 year old can even have a sense of humour if thats the kind of music they listen to. and dont worry, i hate top 40 and club music so you dont have to assume i love that bullshit.

  • @GenitallyChallenged

i dont think its that complicated. I think you're just immature

  • @beatleman17 no, i think it is. youre getting butthurt over donovan.

  • the word 'beautiful' is used too lightly these day, but this song truely is. i only discovered donovan a few months back but he is fast becoming my favourite singer songwriter :-)

  • @stofstg Lucky you, he is one of the best ever, and he recorded a lot of fine songs. For too many years he didn't get enough respect because of the 60's flower power and flowing robes images from when he was very famous. But he had more great songs than probably anyone of his era (other than Lennon, McCartney and Bob Dylan). And he excelled in many different styles such as folk style, psychedelic, jazz-pop, even straight rock and jam-style rock. I expect you will enjoy discovering Donovan!

  • This song sets me a'dreaming. Wonderful lyrics and performed by a master musician.

  • I love Donovan.. he is a genius.... I wish I could see him live... it's sooo expensive, or he's not playing here... boo hoo

  • "I just wanted to thank you for ruining my life"

  • @Luffy55555 Max! What are you doing? :)

  • Wonderful folk song and excellent acoustic guitar playing

  • thanks for uploading this ~ a treasure

  • Good song.

  • REMINDS ME OF HOME JERSEY CI

  • A beautiful song- a forever favorite.

  • heard this on rushmore. I love this song.

  • @TheGrungeGestapo yeah same

  • My mother bought this album in Detroit when I was about 10 and I played it to death...most friends hated it but I'll never forget his songs

  • On a tiny piece of coloured glass...

  • imagine if you will a calideascope -- with electric images ,and flashes. and beach scenes ,and youth running with laughter--and of course those lovely seagulls parading around clownish and full of steam----donovan you gave me the best daydreams ever -- still reflect on all your works--- you are on a high up on my list of all time favorite performers

  • argueably one of the most sychedelic songs ever fromn all ages past and present-----donovan i will cover this song -- wont ever bring what you brought to us but ill give it a good shove --bet on it

  • Love this song. Donovan has the bardic -storyteller-musician blood of the Celtic ('elfin') race inside him. So of course he's a poet.

  • larissa

  • Always loved this...

  • cool dude,good tune..

  • What a treasure of a song. So beautifully written, played, and sung.

  • This song is so well constructed that it can get away with a simple lyric repeated without modification and without a bridge. Beautiful and hypnotic. Makes a NYC boy want to see the gulls wheeling and spinning on Jersey.

  • I agree with your sentiments.

  • Always... Donovan, such a wonderful song writer and artist. Thank you!

  • I've been looking everywhere for this!! Thankyou thankyou thankyou, 5*!!

  • thank you ...this song brings back some special memories

  • This is essential poet/troubadour, '60s poet style. Very fine.

  • Ace, this completes my 'Days of the week compliation', Thursday was the only day I had to search a song for & this one's cool..cheers Donovan..

  • You could just listen to "Days of the Week" by Stone Temple Pilots to get your minimum daily requirement of days.

  • have been playing this song on & off since it came out...still as beautiful...Shaz

  • Still sounds as good 40 years later.....

  • just heard this song yesterday in an episode of heartbeat!!....love this song

  • I like it, but I can't hear too much Donovan. It's too naive, blue, down for me.

  • beautiful tune.Flows deep...I love it

  • this song makes me blue

  • love this tune

  • hi, yes this is his best, dark and simple.
