@Lennonish Sure they had....for example When I'm Sixty Four was written when Paul was about 15. In fact a lot of songs that appeared on Beatles albums were composed much earlier while they were still kids in Liverpool
@Thatsniperonthehill3 I know. I follow the sun as well. I just didn't bother as it wasn't relevant to the point I was making. Maybe I should say that they didn't play any original songs at the time, but hey saw her standing there.
THANK YOU! I've been yearning to see this again since I originally caught it in 1994! The performance inspired me to buy the soundtrack CD, which I still listen to.
Woah man...I knew the film and that they had actors playing or miming the parts - never knew the actual band PLAYING ever actually played in front of an audience, BRILL!
Is it just me but looking at Greg Dulli on this, does anyone else get the impression the original idea was to get the actual BAND to play the roles in the film? Just facially Dulli LOOKS more like Lennon than Ian Hart ever did...
@yukiohanafender There was always shitty music on. not sure if you remember nsync, cristina aguilera etc. Even in the beatles time there was shitty music. everyone is always bitching about how crappy music is nowadays. turn off mtv, there's plenty of good music now.
This is great, but I remember they did a BLISTERING version of "Helter Skelter" during the end credits...I've been wanting to see that performance for 16 years

This sux , too many rhythm guitars just thrashing......this sounds more Ramones than Beatles.....besides these aren't original Beatles songs anyway. The presenter should've said that this was a tribute to Classic American Rock n Roll & Soul rather than The Beatles.
@theselector ...the producer of the soundtrack (Don Was) was also the producer of a few Ringo albums...he asked Ringos advice.....& this is the outcome.....I know Ringo wasn't in The Beatles at the time that the film is set...but he was in Rory Storm & The Hurricanes who where in Hamburg at the same time...it's not meant to sound like the polished performers we all know....it's meant to sound like a band learning their trade, who where on speed each night...
@e8412561 Wait a minute.....R u saying that this band played the music for the Backbeat movie? ie...recorded the soundtrack? That's hard to believe. Also if they were paying tribute to the Hamburg days why do they have The Beatles post Hamburg on the video screen just b4 the band starts?
@theselector .....yup...this band recorded the soundtrack....some people like it because of its roughness...some people dislike it because of the same reason.....I don't know why the t.v producer is showing post Hamburg shots of The Beatles.....maybe he's talking down to his audience....maybe he was thinking that if he put up a photo of John, Paul, George, Stu & Pete...the audience wouldn't get the connection.....I'm only guessing....
I recorded this back in high school too. Loved it instantly. This WAS Dave Grohls 1st big appearance after Cobain died. I always thought he was still in mourning the way his hat is covering his face. Great Vid. I wish they played more songs.
I have the soundtrack, but have always thought the playing and the vocals were really sloppy, much like a band full of young kids first picking up an instrument. But, that's grunge for ya.
horses for courses as the kids say.
but, in their defense, it does look like they're having fun and have a lot of evergy.
from imdb : 1990s punk-rock musicians and techniques were used to create the film's soundtrack, instead of the precise styles of the period, to better convey the way the music felt to the early Beatles audiences; "it was the punk of its day". I was going to try and say something similar, but that's just much more concise.
I saw the movie at a premier in 1994, I think. I had enjoyed the movie and surprisingly the acting of mostly everyone. I took a buddy of mine that I had at the time (he's in a huge trib band based here in LA for the past decade or so).
Yeah, good description. I have the Hamburg album and they played everything at hyper-speed. It's pretty punkish. And this was supposedly recorded when they'd mellowed, by 1962.
oh they weren't mellowing then, it was still their speed rock punk phase, just like on all the early bbc sessions the bass is high in the mix, they just kicked the place.
I'd really have to strongly disagree! The Beatles were far from the "punk of its day" as a matter of fact the beatles in the early their early years were extremely boy band/pop music! I'll even go further and say that none of these musicians are punk either! dave Pirner and soul asylum were once a punk band way before grave dancers union but none of these people and there respective bands were punk!
@wakaw07 - Like many other posters are saying in this thread - you need to listen to the Beatles Hamburg tapes to hear the punk sound. Punk means many things to many people. So IMHO the Beatles had a thrashy, rough, high speed sound on the Hamburg tapes (and these were from 1962 when the band was starting to mellow). Listen to their cover of Chuck Berry's Talkin Bout You and you'll get what I'm saying. To say the Beatles were extremely "boy band/pop" is a stretch.
I must've watched my VHS tape of this video 11 million times in high school. Just think: there was a time where something this amazing could happen under the MTV umbrella.
Pirner has been a drinker in the past, but that's just the way he performs without a guitar. He's always in motion! That's why he still drives the women crazy.
The lead singer Greg Dulli from the Afghan Wigs/Twilight Singers played guitar on the first FOO FIGHTERS album the song is called X-static im pretty sure he was the only additional musician other than Dave Grohl
nice band. dave pirner ruins it alittle. cobain was picked for them vox but didnt make it. shame. still a great sonic blast. love the way thurston jumps on greg at the end.
I liked the guy who sang "Money" and all the "John" songs, even though he didn't sound anything like him, but the guy who sang "Long Tall Sally" and all the "Paul" songs doesn't even do those Little Richard "wooo"s. I'd have picked someone else.
Well, the song itself was written about a roller coaster. . . not sure if that's what it was called or if Paul just used that to mean something that's gone all crazy. . . but later it came to mean Charles Manson's cult, because he heard the song and thought it was a sign for him to start killing people. Silly Manson.
