I've been to Japan because of my job. Anime is much more popular there, and much less looked down upon.

In fact, if you ride the public train, it's not rare to see over half of the people reading a cheap manga.

Anyway, how is it healthy or productive to "look down" upon a form of entertainment?

The video, while probably painstakingly made, doesn't capture all that the con has to offer, like the Masquerade, concerts, and the new friends that you get to meet and make in a con. @kittycat11772 Yes you can wear a costume and yes there is a fee. Almost all cons have a website where you can pre-register months and months and months ahead of time. Which is much cheaper than at door prices.

@TheStars201 Cheapest ticket Ive ever gotten was 35, most expensive was 50 (Katsucon 2011). It depends on age and how early you buy the ticket. Earlier = cheaper so get that pre-reg done. And the people selling things make their own prices, so its hard to say.
