I can't say I was ever a fan of JK, but I always find his music maddeningly catchy. Maybe it was designed that way. I don't like the way that his songs are being written out of pop history. It begs the question as to who and what else the taste makers will write out. There's plenty of good music that has been overlooked over the years because it doesn't fit the taste of those with the hands on the levers. Happily, the Internet is allowing us to be proactive and listen to the music we choose.
"The copyright in the footage is owned by him as performer and Internet Rights were never granted to the terrestrial broadcaster." Is this why the BBC cut it from TOTP this week? Perhaps JK requested them to.
BBC should not be rewriting history by cutting this out of the repeat (even the "uncut" late night showing). Same week as Tavares were on with Heaven Must Be Missing An Angel too. This is interesting info that the BBC have not let viewers see because they're scared of complaints. Music is music, history is history. I don't care what a performer did or didn't do.
Glad you had a hit with it Jonathon. Just goes to show you the differences in american /euro tastes. This version would not have sold well here as the Travares version was a smash hit.
JK made loadsa records with studio musicians....the back up vocalists on this include Stephanie De Sykes and Clare Torry................arranged by Johnny Arthey who is much missed by those who worked with him.
The melody for the first 3 lines of each verse sounds exactly like ELO's song Showdown. ELO's song came out in 1973; this was first released in 1975 by Tavares.
Something dangerously cynical about Jonathan King & His sinister BBC Radio 1 sponsors; - Candy coloured clowns.....
-Like, all along, they were laughing at the gormless, feeble minded oiks (That means YOU!) -that payed their wage-money for the hideously stupid drivel proffered as statutory entertainment by HM BBC.
No sadly I didn't write it and yes, the wonderful Tavares original flopped in the UK so I did my own interpretation of it and went into the UK top 10.
Its not a bad version, Take thats version was much better produced but this has some charm to it. Who will ever know the exact truth about the allegations etc? Only him and others involved i suppose? I try not to convict ppl untill i see the evidence, so i still listen to his music.
a question for viewers........would you say that the riff from this song has been stolen for jennifer lopezs' new song??? take a listen to both.......yet again old songs being ripped off
This is effin- awful!

Tavares's was ok and Take That's is to techno.
Musically speaking this is the most complete.
lordelfeo 3 years ago
Take That's isn't techno.
rtvtrvbtrbrtdbrtrtb 3 years ago 2
Nah Take That's version is better. This is cool though...in its on special retro-way. It has the base of J-Lo's Hold It Dont Drop It.

Dont like JK but I used to love this song when i about 13.. Take That's version is pretty good too.

Yes many have mentioned the brilliant Tavares original Cris but this was the huge UK and European hit version. Top Ten and over 500,000 sold.

Take That's pop version is for sure the most famous.
rtvtrvbtrbrtdbrtrtb 4 years ago 2
Both versions got into the top 10 UK singles chart but JK spent MORE weeks in the chart with his version than Take That did with their version !
