Live Looping w/MIDI (Kid Beyond style)

I' m not seeing anything like " MIDI yoke out 1" in the dropdown for MIDI outputs.. Anything I need to change in the settings or what could it be?

I' m using a EMU Xboard and a Novation NIO 2/4 interface

I donno man. The way you just used Live is no different from regular stacking. Correct me if i'm wrong, I'm still on Live 7, but doesn't the looper device in Live 8 automatically sync the tempo so you dont have to use click tracks?.

I've been making beats without click tracks or back loops for years. Used to do it on Cubase.

@NativeDubs This looks *way* more useful than the Live 8 looper, because you get a seperate track for each phrase which can be muted or otherwise messed with. Much more like the functionality of an RC-50 for example. The looper device will allow you to build up a loop, but doesn't give you much flexibility to subtract except an 'undo' . This method looks like it allows you to use mutes to construct full songs. Looking forward to trying my own variation of this - Thanx to the author!

2 minutes and eighteen seconds into the video, when asked to turn on the Track switch for the Keyboard Input in Preferences-MIDI/Sync, the font of the lettering for the Keyboard changes color from black to orange.

Does anyone know what this indicates? It doesn't happen in the video.

if not - orange letters indicate that the midi ports are used by another application.

when i double-click Incoming Trigger in Translator Classic 1.6.1, the Edit Translator Entry Arm/Launch dialogue opens, ..so far so good!

But when i check the Capture Midi square, a stream of F8's pour down under Midi Message Trigger, and the words Timing Clock appear to the right of Midi Message Trigger.

Also, when creating and naming the 8 presets, my screen was the midi translator as it first appears. The screen doesn't look like his.

Seriously, why cant modern sequencers have a real-time midi loop function included?

It is one of the easiest and fastest ways of putting a track together,

and was possible for years with old midi hardware.

Why oh why do modern sequencers have to be so complicated, and have a much more time wastingworkflow than the good old reliable way of doing things?

@djsmithy no, it's *one* way of putting a track together. if you're such an expert with your years of hardware experience, program your own midi looping software in max msp.

@djsmithy what are you on about man? there is a realtime midi loop in every single program i have ever used. and the reason some sequencers may appear complicated is that they are designed to try and meet the workflow needs of as many people as possible - not just you.

i tried everything before i arrived at a sequencer that is perfect for me. perhaps you just haven't found yours yet

I have found it alright - the yamaha RS7000. ;)

I could probably have been a bit more clear in my message,

the main point i was making was about workflow,

i find it much harder to be creative with software sequencers, for getting your basic ideas down quickly and easily.

The RS isnt perfect but probably one of the best live hardware sequencers released commercially imo.

@djsmithy it's called technological progression... Ableton isn't at all difficult to set up .... but if you've never done it before it would be perhaps. I used to use Cubase on an Atari... just move with the times, that's all. :o)

When I try to load the MIDI input into the translator with Live still open, I get a message that the input is in use and it refuses to load this. How do I get around this? I'm using a M-Audio MIDI connection (1x1) to connect my keyboard to my computer.

go to device manager and look under USB or sound, video

make sure it's installed correctly (might need sw)

go onto live, go to preferences, midi sync, input, choose your midi.

How do you get rid of the recorded clips and get set up to record new loops? This method looks like you can only record 8 loops.. I really would like to, say, re-record the kick or chord loops entirely via midi.

Is there an OS X equivalent of the translator program you used?

havlajznik , i had the same problem, simply in the newer version of midi translator on teh outgoing switch message set it to "next preset" instead of putting like track 2, 3, 4 etc...

dvooze, try any pedal you can get your hands on, guitar amp pedal, or best find old sustain pedal or expression pedal for midi keyboard. plugs into a full sized jack inout on your midi keyboard / controller.

Would there be a way to do this so when you pressed the pedal it would start to record a new clip and then play it and then jump to the next free clip but not start recording untill you pressed the trigger again ?

Sure. Just tag channel and channel record with different keys, and add a translator to toggle the channel with your first pedal press (outgoing=corresponding key for channel), then add another translator that starts recording on that channel, then another for channel switch. That should do it.

Great tutorial mate; I've done what you suggesting but having a problem:

- when I press a pedal, it arms and jumps on the track 1, when I press it again, it just disables arming but no jump to track 2...

I downloaded the latest version of midi transalator that seems to be different. What is correct settings for Track 1 - Arm/Launch - Stop processing with this translator, is it On or Off by default in your version?

I really appreciated your tutorial. I just set it up with my XV-5080 in performance mode and I'm having a blast freestyling! The only problem with this setup is that you don't have much time to audition before recording starts (the remainder of the two bars is all you get). I just need to find a way to audition the track before arming for record, while still keeping the single pedal approach. Great work!

You have to make sure you have midi yoke first. Second thing is you have to make sure to click on options in Bomes Translator and click midi thru. If you do not click this midi will not go through to ableton.

Replace the midi tracks with audio tracks and you can do it like kid beyond. All the midi programing is being used to switch tracks
