Seriously. Christ, you are good. Bout the best performance ive ever heard. How much of it is pure impro? And when you improvise, do you think you use a lot of "standard licks", if you know what i mean? I find it quite hard to imrovise over theese changes as you do. Any tips?
@1981wooten Many thanks!!! The solo is mainly improv. However I use a lot of Jazz lines which I try to have as my vocab. Think of improvisation as a form of speaking, the song is your subject while the lines are your vocabulary. A good starting place is with Charlie Parker, learn a short phrase, one or two chords, practice it in different keys and try to play it over similar chords. There are many opinions improv how much is made up on the spot but I think this way works pretty well.
Very musical and technically demanding phrasing coupled with a nice tone. The composition is also wonderful in itself. Keep up the good work, you deserve to be known!
I never played bass. Technically I think is hard but not quite hard. However loudly the bass is a semi-acoustic I bet it enables a more accessible and easy study?
Nice stuff! Not sure if you play in the style, how would you rate the slap/pop sound on this bass? I found this model about an hour away and wondering if I should make the trip to try out the bass.
Where can i find bass tab for this song if any one know please tell me i would be gratefull..I like the style of the bass player on this short video...
man, i would sell both my parents to have just one fifth of your phrasing abilities. the thing that astonishes me the most is that it sounds like your phrases and licks are NEVER pattern based, which is a forte of many players (did someone say alain caron?). so, i definitely have to commend your abilities. and, i must confess, i've kept being happy and proud since your comment on one of my vids :D
The new pickups are Seymour Duncan Hot Jazz pickups. Double Coil noisless setup. The original pickups in the G&L bass were very noisy and made strange sounds :)
I'll try to write something for my site about playing in this style.
A quick tip I tend to use voice leading over changes like these. Voice leading is the concept of using leading tones.
Leading tones are scale degrees that resolve strongly e.g. 3 to 7 resolutions or 7 to 3, the numbers are for each chord. G7 to Cmajor would have F to E, or 7 to 3. I don't know if any of this makes sense :) I'll try to write an article soon.
I look forward to seein that article, i signed up to your site incase you hadnt noticed. Im not very clear on theory stuff but I'll try and wrap my head around all that lol fingers-crossed it becomes clear to me one day lol

Let us know what gear you are using in the info section.
We bass players like to know that kind of stuff... it's like the concert program or liner notes on albums. Gotta have it!

The bass is a G&L jb-2 with bassline pickups installed.
Pretty solid instrument, I think it's better than the new fenders, would definitely recommend this bass.

Yeah I'm using Guitar Rig, I think the setting is Jazz Amp. It's a model of the somewhat overused Roland Jazz Chorus, does the job though.
