Rebecca Caine is arguably the most beautiful Christine in any AWL production. What a stunning face. While Sarah is still my favorite (her voice has an odd timbre to it but I love it), Rebecca's voice is warm, pitch-perfect, and clear as crystal. Just lovely.
I love how Chrisitne's wig has changed so much over the years, not in style I mean, but in the way of how totoally 80's it was back then to the beautiful timeless curls ti is now.
I think he took that idea from the 1989 movie version of Phantom, which had Robert Englund (better known as Freddy Kruger from the Nightmare on Elm Street movies) in it, who also I believe directed it. At the end he shows up in NYC having written a modern version of Don Juan Triumphant on a computer and continues to pursue Christine...it's actually not a bad ending if you watch the movie, but I haven't seen Love Never Dies nor have I even heard the soundtrack, so I can't say anything yet.
Actually, ALW took the idea from a book called Phantom of Manhattan, which I hear is terrible. Robert Englund did not direct the movie version of Phantom that he was in, but there was a sequel written that never happened because their first movie was not so successful. I actually love that movie version though, it's my favorite. :)
Colm is not a bad anything. I haven't watched the vid yet so if it says this then I apologize in advance for stating the obvious, but he actually had the part before Michael during workshop performances while the show was being written at Webber's private theatre on his property in the British countryside.
I don't really care who was first when it comes to favorites though. I have almost no affinity for Sarah Brightman, the first Christine. I love Michael though.
I really love Rebecca, but one thing takes away from her performance as Christine. She's TOO technically perfect for the role. Keeping in mind Chrisitne is still training so she should have some flaws with her singing. Other stage Christine's are better in that respect.
Thank you for posting this - anyone else spot Neve Cambell as a ballerina? Definitely, without doubt, this is the route the movie version should have gone. At least then, no matter what critics would have said, it would have at least been an accurate depiction of the stage show, not other Joel S overkill party with leather and lace.
her voice is brilliant and llok at her when he whispers sing for me! i sing this in character alot and htats how christin feels! electrified! you can see how passionate she felt! perfect! but the E is so quiet! its the finale. It shouldn't be shrieked but it has to be present!
In all fairness to poor Rebecca (whose own hair is quite straight) it was the early 90's and hair was still "big" back then, influencing how we wanted to re-imagine a period piece. In the 2004 movie, Christine's hair and costume (i.e. sexy garter belt) attempts to capture contemporary tastes (or at least men's fantasies of what young virginal women looked like in the 1880's!)
I respect Colm as well but Love Michael Crawford as the Phantom. I think it's also unfair to say that Michael can only do Musical comedy/comedy or straight drama since his Phantom was Beyond Amazing. Anyway I like Colm and Michael in different roles and both have talent as performers!
Trivia: 0:43 the dark haired ballet dancer is Neve Campbell. She got her start in the ballet chorus of the Toronto production of Phantom (somewhat illegally, since she was supposed to be 18, but apparently was only 17 at the time the show debuted in Toronto)
Rebecca Caine OWNS this role. Her voice is magnificent. Unlike many of the shrill sopranos who screech their way through the songs or who (like Sarah Brightman) slide into the notes, Caine hits them true and clear. Her cadenza is unmatched.
I agree wholeheartedly. Rebecca Caine NAILED this role like no other I have seen live. She was the first Christine I ever saw and she remains unmatched both vocally and dramatically. On stage, her vocal agility and power gave Carlotta a run for her money and there was no suspension of disbelief like so many others I have seen.
The difference between Colm and Michael Crawford is that this is Colm's natural singing voice and Michael Crawford had to have extensive singing lessons to train his voice to sing this score. I have loved MC for years (was in his fan club in the 1970's) but I didn't like him as Phantom at all because I felt he was masking his natural talent. I guess each to their own, right? I would rather see Michael in Barnum or Billy which played to his strengths.
Well that's also becuse those roles were writtin/made around their talants, becuse they were the frist to be cast in those roles. You don't see MC as playing Jean Veljean, as you do CW, and the same thing goess to CW playing the phantom. I know CW of corse here has playd the phantom, but not like MC, becuse their is no one who will ever be able to coppy him or anyone in a play. But you can make it your own interputttion.
Thank you again for posting this

Wow, Colm's not a bad phantom! His movement and his expression - it's very alluring.

I discovered that not long ago, actually.

I am the same way. Once I heard Rebecca's pefection I could never listen to Sarah again.

You should listen to Claire Moore- she was Sarah Brightman's understudy in London. She is amazing. Her "Think Of Me" is perfection.

michael crawford is still the best

I'll take the movie over the sequal. Everthing that made Andrew Lloyd Webber and the Phantom Great is gone in it.

Did they make Colm shave his beard for the whole production?

I prefer the video to the Sarah Brightman &Steve Harley's,but I don't like Rebecca Caine and Colm Wilkinson's voice....

I really love how they filmed this music video - with the exception of having Colm Wilkinson perform the title role.

It's odd, I keep thinking of Colm as Jean Valjean instead of the Phantom and Rebecca as Cosette.

Oooh if I knew that they were on tour a few years ago, I would've booked a ticket! =(
For some reason, I like Madame Giry more than any other character now!

And she is just utterly adorable here.
