  • I guess once he's drawn the characters a few thousand times, he can more or less wing the proportions and get them right.

  • if you think this is intimidating to watch, imagine being his clean-up artist and having to take those masterpieces and translate them in the best way possible whilst retaining the same energy he had in the original!

  • @Ebrithil hey I don't know if anyone has answered you yet but I will.After looking into it quite a bit myself, I found that Mr. Keane usually uses one of two different pencils.One (the one in the video) is a Grease Pencil (Also known as a China Marker), he used to use a Blaisdell Layout Pencil but they don't produce them anymore. But the Grease Pencil is a modern equivalent. The other he often uses is a Sanford Design Ebony Pencil, they both have large cores, which allows for his broad strokes

  • Keane always has interesting ideas in his scenes, like the rollerblading idea in Tarzan, but I think his work is kind of sloppy and too broad generally. He works so rough and loose that his assistants have to really pull the scenes together in a way that I don't think is terribly responsible. He has great passion and is an inspirational speaker but there are plenty of animators that I think are better.

  • I good animator draws loosely trust me, the looser the better, have you ever seen chuck jones drawings? and its not irresponsible its expected, the flow of the animation only comes when you draw loose, if you try to tighten it up at that stage youl lose alot

  • It's not that you shouldn't be loose in your first pass it's that he doesn't tie down his loose pass enough and therefor looses control of his scene to a degree. Milt Kahl would do a very rough pass and then tie it down with laser precision which gave him more control over the final scene.

    Keane's tightest work and technically most polished is his sequence with the giant golden eagle in Rescuers Down Under. He tied down his drawings much better on that film and it shows. The Beast was a mess.

    I've been a a professional animator for 14 years so I know the process. The way it usually works is the animator will do a fast rough pass to get the feeling and timing and then does a tie down pass to tighten it up and fix drawing problems to pass off to clean up. Keane's early work, like his sequence in RDU were tied down more and worked better. His later work looks like he relied more on his assistants to finish the drawings and it feels rushed at times. Just my opinion.

  • @monsteraaron I actually agree with this. The forms and the acting is still great, but the lines swim all over the place.

  • @monsteraaron I think this was really due to his health, as it deteriorated in later years. He actually had a heart attack shortly before working on Tangled & had to step back from directing. Unfortunately not all of us have the energy and exeubrence of some animators like Richard Williams (nearly 80) lol.

  • Notice how he holds the pencil....That is the key to the lyrical linework. Full arm movement gives his lines rhythm and movement. DRAW YOUR BRAINS OUT IF YOU WANT TO GET INTO CAL ARTS.....The best art school in the U.S.

  • Realy? Its so sad that no matter how good you are at 2D you will always have problems with employment somewhere along.

  • Though I do think they're for a 2D "look" with Rapunzel. Still nice to know that PatF hasn't been taken off the slate.

  • I know! I would love to do that, I am thinking of hopefully enrolling in an art school someday. And I thought of Tarzan too when I saw the body structure and loin cloth =D

  • I think he's using the good stuff here from Cartoon Colour, just standard ingram (sp?) 12 field.

  • Hey, yeah this was from a CalArts lecture last year - the rough he did is right, but for some reason they cut off the rest of the video! He shows the wrong way to tie down a drawing first - then he shows the right way - sadly not shown here cuz it's 100% better!

  • Well as he starts to say here: He knows what the model looks like, and he can go over it and literally start rendering it out "on model" ... but it loses that vitality and life that the rough had. So that he'll do instead, is be a little bit looser about it - concentrate on the flow of the forms, the lines of action - and allows the "on model" drawing to be a bit "off model" but it feels alive! It's a hard thing to explain and I'm really bummed the video cut off. It looked 100% better.

    i use the simple one but after i iport drawing to softwazre and vectorize them lines despeares
