Carreras' voice made me melt. I did a little sigh...I know, I know, his voice is no longer like this, but I prefer to revel in the beauty it once held...glad this video was posted. Scotto was lovely, too, didn't quite understand the comment below that it was "open and old fashioned"? But chacun a son gout, I guess.
@Bigman240 I love Scotto!!!! I think she gets unfairly treated on youtube because she used so much squillo, which in performance sounds ridiculously gorgeous, but doesn't always record so well. I am sick of the new breed of breathy singers. Give me point, ring, squillo anyday =)!!!
@MissJessyeNorman Your comments are very insightful. What you call "point" and "squillo" are integral to the art of opera singing. If we accept singers who sing without those elements, then why do we not accept changes to the orchestral instrumentation as well? Perhaps cellos playing the bassoon parts or flutes taking the trumpet lines. (Of course, I apply this same reasoning to the odd practice today of assigning certain soprano roles to mezzos!)
@Bigman240...the reason it sounds old-fashioned and ugly is because it IS those things...she was trained in Europe and they all sound that way..especially German sopranos (I know, she's Italian, but, I'm on a roll now LOL ) ICK! American trained sopranos know how to project a beautiful sound because they're trained properly in the bel canto style..well, they WERE back in the day, that is. I stopped listening and going to the opera when Beverly Sills retired back in the 80s.. yes, I'm OLD LOL!
Recordings don't tell everything. Quality, size of voice, character, integrity, movement & the effect on an audience need describing too. Have you heard a great performance by this singer live, without a mic? If so please post an objective description to add the wonderful YouTube archive before the memory is lost for ever.
How I wish I could have been there to hear Farinelli entrance an audience with the power of a single note, but we do at least have Charles Burney's marvellous account.
@DivaDeb1234 Yes, you are right. He went through greuling chemo and radiation therapy for it, which ravages the voice. I wish people would enjoy his singing for what it is now...realize what he's been through...and take advantage of all the beautiful recordings he was able to make before his illness. I love me some Magda Olivero in her 80s +. A great artist whose voice has been diminished through age or illness is still way more exciting to me than so many of the poorly trained new stars.
Not a Scotto fan (even if it's my mother's maiden name). But she and Carreras sound superb here.
