Eddie Stubbs-fiddle , Marshall WIlborn -bass, David Mcglaughlin mandolin/fiddle, Dudley Connell (wheres his mustache??) guitar and the great Tom Adams on...mandolin?! hes the banjo picker! One of the best!
When I was 16 this tape was the only bluegrass I had for a year. It was like bluegrass bootcamp I learned singing off this album. Dudley is THE man. Jammed with Eddie and that was an absolute dream come true. He's the real deal. Best band ever. IMHO.
I thought about your last statement, "Best band ever>" and I pondered on it. After much thought, I have come to two relizations. 1. I do not think they are the best band ever. 2. Even though I feel that way, I cannot offer a specific reason for them to NOT be the best band ever!
This a kickin tune. Tom Adams didn't have the nickname "The right hand man" for nothing. He's developed Distonia in his right hand and can't pick the banjo anymore. He still plays guitar, but unless theres a major medical break through he won't pick the banjo like this again. Check out the rest of JMBs here on Youtube. Theres several and all are top notch.
This version of Newton Grove rocks, but don't y'all ever forget who originally wrote and performed all these great tunes for The Johnson Mountain Boys - and that was "the man" Richard Underwood.
I am relatively new to bluegrass maybe 8 years of listening... 5-6 years playing and kickin myself for every year missed for growing up in the DC area and never seeing these guys or seldom scene years ago when they were around
I believe the instrumental that Tom kicks off is a bluegrass version of the Cajun tune "Parlez Nois A Boires". Look that title on YouTube and watch the clip from the movie Southern Comfort...I swear it's the same tune that Dewey Balfa is playing and singing to the dancers.
Actually it's called 'Newton Grove' and was the last track on the "Let The Whole World Talk" album. It's has just an uncanny resemblance to the cajun tune I mentioned earlier. Regardless, it's great!
What actually split this band. I heard it was something to do with a rift between Dudley and Eddie

This is my all time fav Johnson Mtn. Boys song. Thanks for posting.
I've had the pleasure of seeing Dudley w/ the Scene and meeting Eddie Stubbs. Both men are just as nice as can be. Sooo much talent in this video!

This was really good. I gave it 5 stars which I rarely do. But this video deserves it. Good quality bluegrass!

Best Bluegrass group ever. This song was #1 for 11 months, and then #2 for a month, and then back to #1. They surpassed all the standard bearers.
