Act II love triangle: Princess de Bouillon and the actress Adriana Lecouvreur rivals for the affection of Maurizio, Count of Saxony. Maurizio in the aria hints to the princess his feeling of obligation but waning love. She has helped him socially and politically and he is on dangerous ground abandoning her. So the aria explaining his weary spirit is full of double meanings that can be read as a statement that he is burdened by his debt to her or his guilty love.

double meanings: meta is the word for destination and poetic word for beloved(with a change of accent), so, first line he is saying he is heavy-hearted because his "meta" is far away from him; meta meaning his aims or ambitions but also his beloved ; "assai vi debbo" can mean both "I owe you far too much" or "You (your love)is a great burden." Notice that the intensifier "assai" is give an 11 second diminuendo/crescendo or messa di voce emphasizing even more the emotion of the phrase.
