I think the reason there is blood is that Nintendo didn't think young players would not be able to get to the final boss since to reach this boss you must collect all the Heart Stars appearently Nintendo assumed that mostly older players would be able to get them all

I think the only problem they'd have is that Zero himself is a bit freaky, and then of course the part where his eye just pops out. (Ok, I have to admit that's still kind of freaky) But my point is that the blood is probably not the thing that's going to scare kids.
