i hate it when people give fionn shit for having a slightly different style in this album. i think its great, personally. and most dylan fans hated him when he first had a full band, rather than just him and his guitar and his harmonica. even though i prefer solo acoustic artists, some of artists best songs are with a full band
what is good about uncle Fionn is his lyrical content, his lyrics are important and arent just wishy washy songs about "being in love with someone you can't imagine being without" etc... And he is not scared to try different things. he could have written an album the same as his first but he is moving forward stylistically and that is always a good thing.
Personally, I feel that this just gives us a glimpse at Fionn Regan's potential. Fair enough it's not a perfect album and it was always going to be hard to follow up such an amazing first album, but songs like 'Lord Help My Poor Soul' reach a new level of brilliance. I think Shadow of an Empire is a pretty pleasing second outing from one of the modern age's best singer/songwriters.
@taibhise Dude, don't compare the fratelli's with the libertines... HUUUGE difference, Libertines are way better. I do agree that this sounds like the fratelli's, too bad.
@taibhise Its a brilliant follow up to his debut. In fact, I couldn't have seen it any other way now that i think of it. I am glad it wasn't a repeat of his first, it shows his honesty to his fans.
@taibhise my arse does it sound like fribertines ... absolute sacrilidge sayin dat .... this is the most modernest sounding nostalgia i`ve ever heard in my life .. this tune in particular or coat hook or genocide matinee.. my friend once said in triumphant tones " mr dylan ..... the baton is in safe hands " ....... and thats one ounce of the sound ... original sounds meaningfull concept .......... rabbit rabbit rabbit... sorry folks
...i just like his music... is that ok?

Ah Crap,he's "gone electric" without going to Newport. Still, with End of History under his belt I think he's earned it.

I love this song and do think the second album is better than first. Good substitute to Ryan Adams (on same label)

This comment has received too many negative votes show
a poor follow up to his first album - sounds like any other fratelli, libertines type indie band

ya, i agree, the extra instruments were completely unneeded in the first album because it was so tender, this just sounds so normal

sounds like a band called larykin love but they were wicked so i don't see it as a bad thing

@taibhise don't put the libertines along side the fratellis, the libertines are miles above the fratellis.
