I don't know if Leni Riefenstahl was a nazi or not, but I think, is very important that you look well Olympia, and in special way, the moment where she films Jesse Owens, because in that sequence one can see that she had a big admiration for that athlete. I don't think you can film a man in that way if you don't like him or if you fill superior. Maybe she just knew how to use a camera.

I love Lynn Cohen. Oddly, I admire Riefenstahl. See "The Wonderful, Horrible Life of Leni Riefenstahl" and I you'll see how incredibly complex and absolutely fascinating this woman was. Honestly, I found "Triumph of the Will" impossible to watch. Whatever you want to call it, it's propaganda and it's disturbing. "The Last Days..." is not propaganda; certainly not in the the same sense. It's dramatic license. It also gives us yet another brilliant performance by a truly under-rated actress.

I met her in 1997 at a small press conference. She insisted that she had no knowledge of Nazi activity as this relates to alleged war crimes, but her defense of the notion Aryan superiority suggested that she was not being honest. She was old, so everybody took it easy on her, but nobody believed that she was unaware of Nazi crimes. And she did address the destruction of non-German art by claiming that it wasn't art that was being destroyed. She was a Nazi, of this I am convinced.

Actually, her films need to be shown widely (especially in schools!), with a lot of discussion about just how horribly wrong a political movement can go. Riefenstahl denies this, but she was in it for her own glory, and the camera lens worships the Fuhrer just as fervently as the crowd. She could have made it satirical or sly, but chose bombast and grand spectacle.

I love Lynn Cohen. Oddly, I admire Riefenstahl. See "The Wonderful, Horrible Life of Leni Riefenstahl" and I you'll see how incredibly complex and absolutely fascinating this woman was. Honestly, I found "Triumph of the Will" impossible to watch. Whatever you want to call it, it's propaganda and it's disturbing. "The Last Days..." is not propaganda; certainly not in the the same sense. It's dramatic license. It also gives us yet another brilliant performance by a truly under-rated actress.

Good performance. The Leni actress is believable and in her temper very Riefenstahlish. But the spoken German is a little bit ridiculous (for German ears). But good work for a student movie anyway.

@Oswaldfeldkatze Wir müssen uns zunächst über die Situation klar werden. Warum lassen sich die Deutschen so erniedrigen? Ein wesentlicher Teil der Antwort besteht in der Erkenntnis, dass man uns Deutsche seit Jahrzehnten über wichtige Teile der Geschichte belogen hat. So glauben (zu) viele Deutsche, dass alleine die Aggressivität der Deutschen zu den beiden Weltkriegen geführt habe. Und dieser Schuldkomplex macht wehrlos. Die wahren Ursachen beider Weltkriege bleiben im Dunkeln.

BTW, let's imagine an oposite version of her life. I mean, she had used to filmmed any of dictators, mass morders from Central Africa, and then, many years later, at the risk of her life, she tied to search and rescue her jevish friends. If so, would anyone dare make film like that?

I belive she had no such power to protect anyone from K.L., even if she knew Adolf Hitler himself. As an artist, she surely was deeply touched, but, most likely, she could do nothing about destination of any victim of holocaust. She can't be blammed for crimes of system she lived in.

That's a tu quoque fallacy, as is your entire rant. I'm not saying that other groups have not been responsible for atrocities -- I *am* saying that one atrocity does not excuse another.
I would agree with you that Leni's art should be treated as distinct from the propagandistic aims that it served.

"Ich war niemals ein Partei" (5:54) means that she never was _a party_. I won't judge about the quality or truth of the film (!). However, the German that's spoken is kinda hilarious. Even the brunette Riefenstahl actor and the gipsy (?) girl have a terrible American accent (5:03, 8:12). And please, where is that a satire? It's a fiction-documentary or something.
