  • how do we call someone practising Jiu jitsu?

  • Mr primola why dont you make a more realistic video, since most are going to never be faixa preta anyway. like "how to get a bjj purple belt" , lol thats what i need. (just sayin).

  • i agree...showin up 2 class is most important..

  • Great advice! I think you are awesome Ken! Motivates me to show up to my academy even more! I'm trying to squeeze a least 4 days due to school and work. Awesome vid!

  • Good advice! I train Russian Sambo and it's very funny to hear some of the people that come in our club and ask if they can get a black belt Judo (my sensei is a Judoka as well) or a Masters Certificate in Russian Sambo after 2-3 years of training. I always tell them yes, it's possible (e.g. BJ Penn got his black belt in 3 years) but you have to train very hard.

It's sad that modern Sport Karate has set low standards for black belt achievements, heck 2-3 year teens already have black belts.

  • @pcjudosambo how is it sad? they dont learn as much standing as they do on the ground

and they also learn some takedowns so it doesnt take years

  • @bjapan96 well, a 15 year old karate student that got a black belt doesn't know that much. I am not even sure they can defend themselves properly. I personally fought against a karateka on the street and it was pretty pathetic. I guess having a black belt in Sport Karate is not the same as having a black belt in Traditional Japanese Karate (e.g. like the one Mochida trains in).

  • @pcjudosambo so your saying machidas karate is shit? wow

but im not saying being a black belt is the best

if you have years behind it then yes its good doesnt matter if your 15 or not

  • @bjapan96 where did I say that Machida Karate is bad? I meant that it's good. Even Machida said that modern "sport" Karate is crap compared to the traditional Japanese art that his father taught him. The sport version that you see where these kids fly through the air and spin a sword like it's an action packed movie is ridiculous because all of them have a black belt but probably wouldn't stand a chance against a real black belt. These 15 year old black belts get owned by orange belt judokas.

  • You have some great advice I enjoyed this and how you said not to have an ego on your other video. I do Martial Arts 6 times a week I would do it on sundays but the Gym/Dojo is closed sunday. In my opinion some people like martial arts and some people live and breathe martial arts.

  • Good Advice, I'm A Muay Thai Practicioner And Have Been Injured For Bout 8 Weeks Now (Broken Hand Cast On etc.) But Haven't Missed A Day Of Training Since The Injury. Although I'm Only Riding The Bikes & Running On The Treadmill I'm Still Watching & Learning.

  • as my trainer would say: "continuity is the most important thing"

  • great videos!

  • your right. My last cage fight was against a supposd blue belt but he was much better. Guys like that sandbag so they can compete in a lower class to ensure they win. Naga is full of sandbaggers

  • i have a question ive been doing BJJ for 4 years and havnt gone uop a belt yet i come to class 2-3 times a week why?

  • 1, how many stripes do you have? 2 have you been folowing the blue belt curriculum? 3. do you have a good attitude when you go to class?

    - iv been in 3 years am now a 4 stripe white belt waiting for the next testing.

  • have a white belt i own all the aldultas there and evryone likes me...i thought it just took a while?

  • thanks brother I agree

  • i agree 110%. I went from blue to blackbelt in just under 4 yrs. And its all about time spent on the mats. The 10yr to get a black belt is a myth. Although my blackbelt is american combat jiujitsu ,not brazillian, the concepts the same. I would love to see some chain submission techniques

  • in bjj there are specific time limits which are minimum time on each belt, white is about 1 year blue 2 years, purple i believe 2, brown 1year but they almost always are longer... why rush to get a purple or brown just to go to a diffferent school to get killed by there blue belts

  • @geobros

i dont understand minimum time requirements, they dont make sense.

understanding the techiniques and demonstrating ability should be enough to move on.

bj penn got a black belt in 3 years, not to say everyone can do that but my point is if your skilled enough you should be held back from time requirements

  • It's important to the student to define what's his goal in training Jiu-Jitsu:

    - Fitness/Wellness

    - Self-defense

    - To be a black-belt (what I hope means to be a teacher)

Some students get really relieved and happy when they realize they don't want to climb the belts. Funny thing is they take some time to realize that.

  • thanks for your input

  • Ken - great advice.. I was always the part timer for many years due to constantly moving locations, family, job demands, social partying and attending nite classes to get two graduate degees. I retired from the military and now have a career in civil service in DC. My goal on retirement next year is to dedicate enough time to pursue a Black Belt in BJJ by following a serious cardio, flexibility and strength training regime with top attendance at BJJ class. Best Regards,

  • Thanks Troy

  • great advice as always thnx again

  • thank you sir

  • Thanks for this !

Obviosuly you can not get your BJJ black belt if you are injured all the time. So, a brief blurb on injury prevention would be totally appreciated !

  • I agree

  • hey man, im very interested in bjj, i also come from somewhat a wrestling backround not so much, and a tkd backround, i was interested in grappling for a while and seeing how interesting it is, i mean i wonder, is 5 times a week efficient? like monday through friday, and i guess saturday and sunday are your days.

  • @cburcinc I was just thinking the same thing.... I always get injured then can't train.
