The problem is, it dosen't always do that. In a short barrel like a M4, it fails to fragment because it does not have the needed velocity, or if it's passing through objects like steel and wood. A non fragmenting 5.56 leaves a .22 caliber hole in the enemy, which won't stop a determined adversary, that's why rounds like the 7.62x39 and 7.62x51 are better man stoppers because they have consistent performance.

In addition, it's not so heavy... 7.62 is a good sniper round. HOWEVER, what do you guys think about 6.8... I'm still learning so I'd like to hear your input.
Now I don't own a 6.8 rifle, but I know some stuff about them. The 6.8 has increased lethality and penetration over the 5.56x45 and 7.62x39. The 6.8 round has much better performance out of short barreled rifles then the 5.56x45. The 6.8 round has increased recoil over a 5.56x45, but it still dosen't recoil nearly as much a 7.62x51. The 6.8 is heavier then the 5.56x45, which means you'll carry less ammo compared to the 5.56x45. The 6.8 is also more expensive then the 5.56x45 and harder to find.

If your thinking about the 6.8 i would also look at the 6.5 Grendel. Don't take my word for it, look up 6.5 Grendel on youtube and in Google. If you have any questions let me know. I will be more then happy to answer anything on your mind : )
Sorry I haven't been online much. Yes, definitely love my AR. As far as accuracy goes I think it does well for a tactical assault rifle. It's a great weight, and can be utilized for various types of shooting... long distance and CQ. However, I've never shot an AK so I really can't make a clean observation from which is the better firearm. :)
the most ridiculous thing i hear coming from the ak side. is that the 5.56 is wimpy, when in fact it is the 7.62x39 that has ballistics and wounds that resemble "handgun" wounds. while the 5.56 is far more devestating and kills far quicker. when an ak goes off it bends and warps. it damn near tears itself apart everytime you shoot it.
The AK produces wounds similiar to handgun wounds? 7.62x39 means the bullet being fired has a diameter of 7.62mm which far outweighs the 5.56 (bigger punch). It was designed to be an intermediate round between a rifle/pistol round (.30in). The 5.56mm is highly aerodynamic due to its larger cartridge case (45mm) and when it hits it has the tendency to penetrate quickly and cleanly. Meanwhile when the AK hits, it hits roughly and sloppily. The AK round is far more devastating. I'd choose the AK.
After 2,000 fps it really matters little, that bullet is going to hit you with enough force to do severe damage.
In a gun battle, it also matters little who's bullet is slower, just who's the better shot... and just because you have an ar doesn't mean you'll get a better shot off...
It's the person and to the extent, the gun... Though AK's don't jam as much as AR's..
the .223 and the 5.56 are different rounds so are th 7.62x51 and the .308 but we're talking about the 7.62x39 which travels anywhere from 2300 to 2700 fps, and the 5.56 which is what i shoot fragments upon impact releasing all of its energy into the body upon impact. it also creates a larger permanent and temporary cavity inside the body. in all cases the .308 is the superior round. ive used all three on actual flesh, and know which performs better. for the ak lovers i suggest the ak-74.
i though you were refering to the ak round as the .308. glad to see you arent. however the ar 50 is not the same as the ar-15 or ar 10 although it is an armalite it is a bolt action single shot rifle, barrett makes the semi auto .50 bmg's. the prefix ar means armalite rifle. the argument that weve been having is which is superior the ak-47 round or ar-15 round. and that the ak round produces wounds similar to the .38 special which is true.

Personally, for a handgun, I was going to go for a subcompact Glock .40, but I'll probably be going for a Makarov, now, so that I can buy an AR-15 and assemble it myself. I've decided for a Tromix Shark muzzle brake instead of a Phantom flash supressor, I'm not sure why, I just like the looks of the Tromix Shark. I got a deal on a standard M4 type upper reciever for $200, along with the stock and buffer tube/buffer assembly. So I'll definitely be getting an AR-15 now.

To tell you the truth, I've skated away from the carbine idea, now I'm pushing towards a longer AR-15. So far I'm looking at a 24 inch fluted barrel, standard size freefloat rail system/guard, Ace Skeleton buttstock, with a variable power scope, not sure which one yet. I'm hoping that it will prove as a good as it looks. I've also broken away from a Tromix Shark and am going with a Model1 trapezoidal muzzle break, again for shits and giggles. I'll post vids when I get home and its assembled.

If I get an AR15 I plan on getting at least a hydraulic buffer assembly, a Phantom flash supressor, and a bipod. On my military issue weapon I used to have an angle mount which allowed me to mount my night vision side-by-side with my CCO red dot scope. That was quite nice because it allowed me to aim with my dominant eye and see through night vision with my non-dominant eye. They made me take it off when I left for Iraq, though. :(

If your thinking about the 6.8 i would also look at the 6.5 Grendel. Don't take my word for it, look up 6.5 Grendel on youtube and in Google. If you have any questions let me know. I will be more then happy to answer anything on your mind : )

Sorry I haven't been online much. Yes, definitely love my AR. As far as accuracy goes I think it does well for a tactical assault rifle. It's a great weight, and can be utilized for various types of shooting... long distance and CQ. However, I've never shot an AK so I really can't make a clean observation from which is the better firearm. :)

the most ridiculous thing i hear coming from the ak side. is that the 5.56 is wimpy, when in fact it is the 7.62x39 that has ballistics and wounds that resemble "handgun" wounds. while the 5.56 is far more devestating and kills far quicker. when an ak goes off it bends and warps. it damn near tears itself apart everytime you shoot it.

The AK produces wounds similiar to handgun wounds? 7.62x39 means the bullet being fired has a diameter of 7.62mm which far outweighs the 5.56 (bigger punch). It was designed to be an intermediate round between a rifle/pistol round (.30in). The 5.56mm is highly aerodynamic due to its larger cartridge case (45mm) and when it hits it has the tendency to penetrate quickly and cleanly. Meanwhile when the AK hits, it hits roughly and sloppily. The AK round is far more devastating. I'd choose the AK.

After 2,000 fps it really matters little, that bullet is going to hit you with enough force to do severe damage.
In a gun battle, it also matters little who's bullet is slower, just who's the better shot... and just because you have an ar doesn't mean you'll get a better shot off...
It's the person and to the extent, the gun... Though AK's don't jam as much as AR's..

you do the math, at this point the higher fps is going to hit hard and faster plus 5.56 is good for long range

the .223 and the 5.56 are different rounds so are th 7.62x51 and the .308 but we're talking about the 7.62x39 which travels anywhere from 2300 to 2700 fps, and the 5.56 which is what i shoot fragments upon impact releasing all of its energy into the body upon impact. it also creates a larger permanent and temporary cavity inside the body. in all cases the .308 is the superior round. ive used all three on actual flesh, and know which performs better. for the ak lovers i suggest the ak-74.

.223 is a civilian round
5.56 nato is military. which has thicker casing
.308 is civilian round
7.62 nato is military round
but really if you know your guns well, you'd know they got the ar 10 out which takes .308 and 7.62 nato
also they got a ar50 out which is a 50 cal im sure you know.
anyhow like a was stating before. 223 and 5.56 nato fly at 3700-4100 fps depending on the rounds
over .308 or 7.62 i'd def pick 5.56 nato and .223

i though you were refering to the ak round as the .308. glad to see you arent. however the ar 50 is not the same as the ar-15 or ar 10 although it is an armalite it is a bolt action single shot rifle, barrett makes the semi auto .50 bmg's. the prefix ar means armalite rifle. the argument that weve been having is which is superior the ak-47 round or ar-15 round. and that the ak round produces wounds similar to the .38 special which is true.

lol i know the ar 50 isnt the same as the ar 15 :) everything about the rifles are dif but stocks, grips and handguard/free floats.
i much rather be shot with the 7.62 or .308 then a .223 or 5.56 nato tho. i mean think about it a little the 7.62 and the .308 are ment for killing. now you can kill someone with .223 and 5.56 but the main reason the ar 15/m16/m4 was made was to wound your target not kill. becuase it takes more people to help the wounded giving us the advantag

i agree mostly but the actual reason the ar-15 was made is because battlefield reports showed that most firefights took place at 100yds or less and the smaller round allowed the soldier to carry more ammo while it carried the same lethality of the larger 30-06 round used at the time. of course the army diliberately sabotaged the ar during the trials but yes wounding a soldier is preferable to killing him on the battlefield, but 5.56 isn't designed to wound its designed to kill and it does.

Personally, for a handgun, I was going to go for a subcompact Glock .40, but I'll probably be going for a Makarov, now, so that I can buy an AR-15 and assemble it myself. I've decided for a Tromix Shark muzzle brake instead of a Phantom flash supressor, I'm not sure why, I just like the looks of the Tromix Shark. I got a deal on a standard M4 type upper reciever for $200, along with the stock and buffer tube/buffer assembly. So I'll definitely be getting an AR-15 now.

PS: look up .50 bolt action upper recievers, I seriously wish I could afford one. It'd be a complete waste of money but so insanely fun.

To tell you the truth, I've skated away from the carbine idea, now I'm pushing towards a longer AR-15. So far I'm looking at a 24 inch fluted barrel, standard size freefloat rail system/guard, Ace Skeleton buttstock, with a variable power scope, not sure which one yet. I'm hoping that it will prove as a good as it looks. I've also broken away from a Tromix Shark and am going with a Model1 trapezoidal muzzle break, again for shits and giggles. I'll post vids when I get home and its assembled.

I'd in fact like to see those. I use the standard military issue (not by choice), only custom part on it is an ergo grip. (I'm kinda in Iraq right now.) When I get home I do plan on buying an AR-15 or an AR-18.

I'm Army. Specific bases get internet, I guess I got lucky.
If I get an AR15 I plan on getting at least a hydraulic buffer assembly, a Phantom flash supressor, and a bipod. On my military issue weapon I used to have an angle mount which allowed me to mount my night vision side-by-side with my CCO red dot scope. That was quite nice because it allowed me to aim with my dominant eye and see through night vision with my non-dominant eye. They made me take it off when I left for Iraq, though. :(

All the places to shoot rifles here are far, but there's a firing range close to me for handguns. I'm a member there and I always have to rent guns. I want my own.
