The reason that there is a problem with being 14 is because little girls were taking it WAY too seriously and starving themselves and actually doing damage to themselves without understanding what they were doing. Any parent out there should understand why that is a very bad thing for them for the rest of their lives. That is why it was changed and that is why it should stay changed.
At least Chinese gymnasts don't take drugs or try to skip drug tests! Sacramane skipped several tests in the past year, why is she allowed to compete at the 2010 world championship in in Oct. in Rotterdam? FIG and its racist chariman Grandi obviously has a double standard. Morgan Hamm didn't pass a drug test right before Beijing Olympics, and there was anothertop u.s. male gymnast who didn't pass drug test several years ago. Why has been u.s. media and fans so quiet on all these?

FIG Investigating Yang, Dong
Wednesday, September 24, 2008 By Amanda Turner
Dong Fangxiao at the 2000 Olympcs in Sydney
The FIG has expanded its investigation of the Chinese female gymnasts' ages to include members of the 2000 Olympic team, it was reported Wednesday.
Secretary General Andre Gueisbuhler said the FIG is looking into reports of falsified ages of 2000 Olympians Dong Fangxiao and Yang Yun, members of the bronze-medal winning team in Sydney.
i think we should just change the age limit to 14 again. The whole "think of the children" speech is getting a little tired these days. It's not like young gymnasts all over the world (not just in China) are somehow training less and miraculously suffering less injuries because they're forced to wait an extra 2 years. Gymnasts require hard training from an early age, regardless if you're going to compete at 14 or 16. If you want to act like a saint, you need to stop thinking like a retard.
so she was 14 but no one noticed or complained about the age issue. why? because she looked like she's about 16. but looking at 2008, the americans complained how the chinese girls cheated, because they think they didn't "look 16". so their whole speculation is based on how people look? how can you prove that we cheated, when you couldn't even catch the real cheater in 2000? This whole issue just proves that americans are nothing but a bunch of jealous sore losers. don't judge ppl on their looks

Bullshit. And you know it. I mean we may very well have gotten a silver medal even if we were able to put 14 and 15 year old girls in there. I am willing to admit that the Chinese gymnasts were very talented. But don't even try and pretend that those girls were all 16. Yes, you can tell a lot from what they look like. Gymnasts often look young for their age, but not THAT young. CCTV admitted that one of them was underage. Oh right that was a "mistake." They faked those certificates.
you're wrong. Judgments made by looks are often wrong. Americans look like they're in their late 20's at 14. Many actresses are like that too. And CHina has a population of 1.3 billion. You think they couldn't find anyone better than a 14 year-old? Also, in 2000 the Sydney olmpics, I don't think the rule was made yet. A diver from Great Britain holds the record for being the youngest olympian, and that was not too many olympics back. He was also a young competiter in 2008.
The rule was made in 1997, three years before Sydney. Not every sport has the same rules concerning age of their competitors so it doesn't matter what age a diver was if diving doesn't have the same age limit. My God, you could do at least a slight amount of reading before trying to make an argument. And don't give me this 'oh Chinese people look younger' bullshit. I realize that the facial features of Eastern Asians tend to make them look younger than Europeans, but those girls were not 16.
Way to dodge the fact that your country cheated. They admitted it for 2000 athlete and apologized for it. I remember the 2000 Chinese gymnast and how awfully young she looked to be of legal participating age. Don't get mad just because your country was found to be guilty of cheating with underaged athletes. You're the one who's being sore about it.

@sunstripes oh and dong fangxiao was also 14 that year. its actually because of her that they lost the medal. they never found "proof" that yang yun was 14. but i do think that they should change it back to 14 anyway. like mao12345 said, it's not like theyre training less or suffering less injuries
世锦赛 is different form the olympics. Because not as many countries are involved, and they're once every year. Olympics are much harder, and they are only once every 4 years.

Please, save a hard copy of this video. Send it to the IOC the US gymnastic program, the FIG, newspapers, CNN, whoever necessary. I have seen other copies of this delted already. We need proof that Yang Yun said she was underage. Don't let this issue get covered up. If confronted by a global uprising of protest, the Chinese will have to confront this issue. Otherwise, they will continue to lie and cheat to compete unfairly. Thanks.
Actually YOU should do some research before making stupid comments. The 16 year old age limit was set in 1997. Now of course age rules are not the same for every sport so you might be thinking of examples of Olympic athletes who were younger in Sydney. I don't know why you want to make a bold assertion where you are clearly wrong and you have no idea what the hell you are talking about. Either way, look it up yourself, you are absolutely %100 wrong.
lol. All of China knows about this. But most people blame it on Yang Yun because this only the latest in a series of bad new reports about her. Her cheating doesn't mean others are cheating. She's been disliked for a very, very long time already because she's notorious for being an attention-grabber. And now that such a huge deal got made out of it, I doubt the Chinese will dare cheat any time soon.

Is that the reason that she didn't compete in the 2004 olympics?|cause she had 'cheated' at the 2000's?

No, she retired around 2003 (anyway before 2004 olympics) because of her serious injuries.

linwen778 3 years ago
yunfenghz 3 years ago
yunfenghz 3 years ago 2
deerhoof108 3 years ago

As of January 1, 1997, FIG raised the age eligibility by 1 year, so that female gymnasts must turn 16 the year they compete at the Olympic.
