Fucking jesus mother of mary there are some fucking up tight cunts here....loosen up and listen and enjoy! It a great tune.....from some of Liverpools finest.....by some of Seattles finest!
Shocking, the La's are very well known in the UK so stop patronising us. That Americans don't know some of Britains best loved bands perhaps refelcts the fact that they don't really see beyond their own borders. Any country that produces shit like Pearl Jam has no fucking right to tell us to show them some respect. Granted some like them in the UK but a large number hate them, myself included. Vedder vs. Mavers not a fucking contest - Mavers wins everytime. He is simply a genius, a true hero....
@googsy29 I'm pretty sure some Americans do know the Las, otherwise this cover's pretty impressive. And don't be so sweeping, i'd be pretty willing to bet there are loads of fucking great Yank artists you've never heard
@frusciante39 My fault for not being concise enough. My point is that PJ take a beautifully crafted song like Timeless Melody and ruin it, it isn't close to 'pretty impressive'. Listen to the La's doing that song again. Listen to all the song, it's hardly there for more than 3 minutes. The song is about the joy of being able to find the correct melodies, chords, bass parts and arrangement. It is nearly perfect. There is no debate here. Only the La's can do this song justice! So fuck off PJ!!
@googsy29 Mavers a genius and a hero? Wow! I guess... maybe in the UK but no where else. I've been an American fan of the LA's since 1990 and really love their one album but no way is he better than Vedder! I'm sure he has more music inside him it's just that the guy is too picky and contentious. One album does not a genius make...
@jmartin28 Y What exactly puts u in the position to judge Mavers? Could u write like that? We're a very small nation so when we find a band of our own who demonstrates ability and attitude, we r rightly proud of them. Fuck what u think in America. Especially with Vedder held in such high esteem. We actually care more about quality over quantity. One album doesn't make for genius?! What about the Sex Pistols, the Stone Roses debut, REMs 'Murmur'. Think on pal, 'cause ur talking out ur arse.
@jmartin28 Also, u say u love that album. U can't 'cause u wouldn't dare put Mavers down at the expense of Vedder. Furthermore, due to the limited world view Americans have, u'd know that Mavers sells out tours/festivals in Europe/Asia, basically anywhere other than the US, on a whim. At the same time, he has no corporations telling him what to do/wear/play! The man is free. He played the game for a few years, made his money then went back to the slums in Liverpool, a REAL man of the people.
@MrGoogsy29 Americans have a limited world view? I wish! Then we wouldnt be giving all our money to every damn country! By the way, whatever happened to the British empire? And the British man for that matter?
@LennonLove Try explaining it to America though. Apparently PJ can take a solid-gold classic like Timeless Melody, fucking ruin it then expect us to be thrilled that good ole' PJ got the little La's some kinda publicity in their country. They don't seem to understand Mavers isn't interested in the US. He goes on tour on a whim and sells out by word of mouth, makes some money, then returns to the people he loves in Liverpool. The man has complete control of his life and does what he wants!
I'm not particularly a Pearl Jam fan , though I can see why some people like them. The aesthetic of having a grunge band doing this song seems somehow misplaced but having said that it's still cool that they would do a La's tune. The intonation and style of the original are missing maybe even the spirit but they mean well & I guess it's the thought that counts in this instance.
what a cool cunt Eddie Vedder is covering timeless melody, i'm surprised that he has even heard of the la's to be honest, they don't get the recognition they deserve.
@The0Zero Listen to the BBC sessions CD that was brought out a couple of years ago. It's brilliant. I'll give Pearl Jam a listen! Any recommendations?
How is it that bands and fans of bands like Neil Young, The Who, The Rolling Stones, THe ramones, Bob Dylan, I could go on and on, are more than honored to have pearl jam cover their songs. But these La followers are bitchin. Yeah give it up.
I don't give a fuck about Pearl Jam, and their cover sucks. I don't care that Pearl Jam are more famous: The cover sucks. No one should be glad when their favorite song get's a crapy cover done of it by a crappy band.
@solat319 I'll fucking disagree with every last one of them. Line them up and I'll let them know that their wee heads have turned to crap 'cause they listen to so much shit nowadays. 25-years old, at least, and either live or recorded, the La's piss all over ur crap. Listen, America produced so much good music for years. Then they started signing lazy writers who just churned out formulaic 'what the kids want to hear' shit music. if Cobain was still around fucking Vedder would b history anyway.
@cgalbsgo... I play in a La's tribute band... Ocean Slaves and I couldn't agree more. Music is about the sentiment and the sentiment here is right! It always has been with PJ, this is an interesting blues take on a classic song... but make no mistake. Not a patch on the original!
i love pj but if you are going to cover a song you need to do better than 50% of correct lyrics. just saying random lines in any order. come on now ed ved.
@casperboomer and if you knew anything about PJ you would know that Eddie is notorious for messing up lyrics or changing them to suit his mood. None of us who actually appreciate PJ are suprised or disappointed by this.
@solat319 I just happen to disagree, no big deal. It's like "All along the watchtower", to me Dylan wrote it and Hendrix finished it...why have so many people tried to do their version? They'll never come close. The La's ruled it.
@Thejbirdy Thankyou. I've been arguing with Americans all morning about this point. They feel we should 'give in' and accept a terrible, ham-fisted PJ version as 'a great cover'. Excuse me, but fuck off - like u say why do bands feel compelled to cover a song they r clearly never gonna come close to? As u say, the 'La's ruled it'. Ain't any contest here. The La's wrote it, recorded it and played it live brilliantly so many times. Maybe it's more a case of PJ running out of ideas.....?
@MrGoogsy29 I think you are exactly right, I even went out and bought the last Pearl Jam album from a few years back and it was not that great...okay but not like their old style whatsoever. Eddie Vedder did a soundtrack solo for "Into the wild" and it was brilliant. Clearly it was time for a solo career.
@solat319 I just happen to disagree, no big deal. It's like "All along the watchtower", to me Dylan wrote it and Hendrix finished it...why have so many people tried to do their version? They'll never come close. The La's ruled "Timeless Melody".
@solat319 Naw, fuck that. A billion people can like that turgid shit by PJ if they want. Clearly ur head has been turned to shit 'cause u been listening to it for so long. The La's are far and away superior. They wrote, arranged and nailed it. No need for shitty old PJ to come along and ruin it. The original sums up what the song was about. The beauty of the 3 minute pop song. Great vocal, backings, chords, melody, snatches of it u can't get out ur head for days, melodic bass and a simple solo.
A lot of clueless people dont know who the la's are - and why should any la's fan care about that. Bottom line this version is a shambles, i've seen buskers do better.
What a fantastic cover. Love the La's and love Pearl Jam. This is one cover I'd never expect to happen, big kudos to Eddie for his taste and big kudos to The La's for writing such a superb track!
well said!!....ive loved the la's for years, immensely under rated and gone way too early...but i wasnt frightened a bit when i seen this title.."pearl jam timeless melody"...pearl jam are awesome and a band to count on....5 star post!!!
I fucking love The La's, and like Pearl Jam too. I only have "Ten" though.
I like how Vedder covers songs you wouldn't expect, but always pays his dues while still sounding like Eddie Vedder. I like the other covers they do too, like "Young Man Blues" - the Who version.
Pete Doherty couldn't lace Vedders boots....Doherty is a disgrace to music and life...he should be locked up.....with his collection of average songs.....
for those of you who are apparently "La's" purists... I think you should be happy Pearl Jam is covering their tune... a lot of people don't even know who the La's are... PJ is honoring their song, even if you don't particularly like their version... also, I think Pearl Jam has earned a lot of respect by now... so show some... there are people who are covering Pearl Jam songs... its very cool that they are humble enough to want to cover lesser known artists.
Well if your outside of europe then i guess not, being world famous doesn't mean your better! The La's were fantastic they just didn't try to hard to be rock stars it was just about the music. Many world famous bands site them as an influence, so your wrong in what you say about people not knowing who they are. Music purists know who they are!
@cgalbsgo I agree with you PJ gave a "different cloth", to the song (well, maybe just a little) but it's amazing...I love The La's and I love Pearl Jam also, so to me is perfect.
@cgalbsgo whilst I agree to an extent, here in the UK most people have heard of the La's and never heard of Pearl Jam. Its a geographical thing.
Any way you can expose bands like the La's to a new generation, is all good. But the claim that they are "humble enough to want to cover lesser known artists" is one I do not agree with. Its a risky thing covering The La's, just as risky as covering The Beatles, especially to people from liverpool, hence why you get such a polarizing reaction to it!
@cgalbsgo Go to Liverpool, and call-out that the La's are a 'lesser known artist' in a busy pub. U'd get the shit beat out of u for trying that. In fact, visit Liverpool, play the PJ version and u'll find people do not agree with your sentiment that 'PJ are honouring their song'. They take shit about the Beatles, the La's, Echo + the Bunnymen etc very seriously in that city. In fact, violence and music go hand-in-hand in Northern England. Delicate songs, sung by hard bastards from the slums.
any idiot who starts off a post stating "Pearl Jam is the best" fucking needs to take a good, long, hard look at themselves in the mirror. Have u ever thought that after 25-years the La's don't give a fuck about America and don't really care - but we should be happy in the UK, we're being 'honoured', ha-ha!! I also disagree that PJ have earned any respect. Started off riding on Cobain's coat tails - a real talent who understood UK and US music. PJ would be a distant memory if he'd stuck around.
You clearly aren't very knowledgeable about the subject if you think Pearl Jam were riding off Cobain... Ten was released before Nevermind, both bands were riding on the wave whipped up by bands like REM. Furthermore, the La's released one widely respected album, Pearl Jam have released at least three, and after 20 years they can still sell out two 20,000 capacity gigs in Manchester this year, something the La's could never hope to do. You just sound bitter and ignorant.
@cgalbsgo who the fu*k are pearl jam? jesus, and what are they doing to this classic of the beloved mayers crew, this is rape...humble? if thats what destroying magic is in your stupid dictionary, well then im just not a corporate rock whore
I was at this concert and it was incredible. He said thanks for coming down the one lane into here (traffic) Its very humbling thank you. Also said the shirt he was wearing was the same shirt he wore at saratoga in 1991. Which explains its dire need for repair.
I fucking love this song! And not just because Pearl Jam is America's greatest band. The La's are awesome and you people here trashing Eddie obviously hate the fact that he did such a great job singing it. If Radiohead did it you'd probably say it was a "brilliant" cover. So stop hating on Pearl Jam, dick bag.
Gotta say--Pearl Jam have good taste. Now go check out the La's version--there is a stunning acoustic version from a canadian tv show on here. Pearl Jam's version is very classic, in the classic rock sense--but it offers no surprises. The La's version--well, if you have the ear for it, it will stop you in your tracks--completely timeless. So--bonus points to Eddie and friends for unearthing a gem!
if anyone likes this version they should listen to the origional by the las - fuck vedder. he should stop moaning about nothing the fucking hippie has no substance - see lee mavers and the la's - I reckon mother love bone were about a million times better than p jam
I liked pearl jam back in the day (ten, vs), and whilst this cover is certainly not to my taste - being a HUGE La's fan, you have to take your hat off to Vedder and co for spreading the word about The La's...a criminally underrated band. I see the point the 'haters' are making but really...grow up.
Even though he forgot most of the words, it's a bloody good crack at a great song. Never been into Pearl Jam much but Vedder has a great voice and an even better taste in music.
The La`s should be proud that a great, great band like Pearl Jam done such a super job on this! Eddie`s voice was note perfect, and the bands respect and restraint to the song was so pure and full of emotion not normally found on covers.
Normally I hate covers cos they're usually just about a talentless nobody trying to attach themselves to a great artists work but this type of cover I love- one great band paying homage to another great band. Pearl Jam did a great job and this is a great song and the La's were a great band
I think however well Pearl jam did it,precious types are always going to hate it! I am no fan of Pearl jam,and have loved the La's for years ,but I say respect to them for doing this, and I think this version is quite good as it happens!!
The La's were so good they couldnt construct another album because lee being such a perfectionist had to make every album to perfection, i respect pearl jam i dont like them but i respect them, so fuck off hasselhoff and go strum your banjo to the sound of your mum giving line ups.
What a stupid comment. Someone you don't like performing a song you do, ruins it? And of course this makes them cunts. Why? For liking a song you also like? Grow up.
Yes I've heard the original & I love The La's & can't say I'm a Pearl Jam fan. A 'disgrace' suggests disreputable, lowly behaviour. All this is is a band covering a great song, spreading the word of Mavers to a wider audience, & calling them cunts seems to me to be missing the entire point of the song in the first place. What kind of emotion & worldview do u think Lee Mavers is releasing with songs like this & Looking Glass?
check out the la's interview and acoustic performance of timeless melody! good performance from pearl jam but it doesnt compare 2 the la's back in the hay days
Holy fuck ! Pearl Jam covering the La`s. I`m off to rethink my atheism.

Well if your outside of europe then i guess not, being world famous doesn't mean your better! The La's were fantastic they just didn't try to hard to be rock stars it was just about the music. Many world famous bands site them as an influence, so your wrong in what you say about people not knowing who they are. Music purists know who they are!
facefavour 2 years ago
@cgalbsgo I agree with you PJ gave a "different cloth", to the song (well, maybe just a little) but it's amazing...I love The La's and I love Pearl Jam also, so to me is perfect.
deialee2 1 year ago
@cgalbsgo whilst I agree to an extent, here in the UK most people have heard of the La's and never heard of Pearl Jam. Its a geographical thing.
Any way you can expose bands like the La's to a new generation, is all good. But the claim that they are "humble enough to want to cover lesser known artists" is one I do not agree with. Its a risky thing covering The La's, just as risky as covering The Beatles, especially to people from liverpool, hence why you get such a polarizing reaction to it!
TobyEllisSongwriter 1 year ago 2
@cgalbsgo Go to Liverpool, and call-out that the La's are a 'lesser known artist' in a busy pub. U'd get the shit beat out of u for trying that. In fact, visit Liverpool, play the PJ version and u'll find people do not agree with your sentiment that 'PJ are honouring their song'. They take shit about the Beatles, the La's, Echo + the Bunnymen etc very seriously in that city. In fact, violence and music go hand-in-hand in Northern England. Delicate songs, sung by hard bastards from the slums.
MrGoogsy29 5 months ago
any idiot who starts off a post stating "Pearl Jam is the best" fucking needs to take a good, long, hard look at themselves in the mirror.
MrGoogsy29 5 months ago
@MrGoogsy29

I was at this concert and it was incredible. He said thanks for coming down the one lane into here (traffic) Its very humbling thank you. Also said the shirt he was wearing was the same shirt he wore at saratoga in 1991. Which explains its dire need for repair.

What Guitar Eddie is using here?

Schecter PT. Pete Townshend used the same kinf of guitar a lot in the early 80s.

I don't like their version....I like a more Brit appeal but they put it up there for the ages.
Thanks Eddie!
Another WHO fan.

WTF! Pearl jam have good fuckin taste man.
chammone5 3 years ago 5
Gotta say--Pearl Jam have good taste. Now go check out the La's version--there is a stunning acoustic version from a canadian tv show on here. Pearl Jam's version is very classic, in the classic rock sense--but it offers no surprises. The La's version--well, if you have the ear for it, it will stop you in your tracks--completely timeless. So--bonus points to Eddie and friends for unearthing a gem!

if anyone likes this version they should listen to the origional by the las - fuck vedder. he should stop moaning about nothing the fucking hippie has no substance - see lee mavers and the la's - I reckon mother love bone were about a million times better than p jam
relentlessquavers 3 years ago
I liked pearl jam back in the day (ten, vs), and whilst this cover is certainly not to my taste - being a HUGE La's fan, you have to take your hat off to Vedder and co for spreading the word about The La's...a criminally underrated band. I see the point the 'haters' are making but really...grow up.

Cheers brother I will.

Even though he forgot most of the words, it's a bloody good crack at a great song. Never been into Pearl Jam much but Vedder has a great voice and an even better taste in music.

The La`s should be proud that a great, great band like Pearl Jam done such a super job on this! Eddie`s voice was note perfect, and the bands respect and restraint to the song was so pure and full of emotion not normally found on covers.

pearl jam r fuckin gr8

Normally I hate covers cos they're usually just about a talentless nobody trying to attach themselves to a great artists work but this type of cover I love- one great band paying homage to another great band. Pearl Jam did a great job and this is a great song and the La's were a great band

Ha,Pearl Jam are wasters? How many albums do The La's have?I rest my case.

pearl jam is an all american rock band who the fuck r u cuz
anth711 3 years ago
The La's were so good they couldnt construct another album because lee being such a perfectionist had to make every album to perfection, i respect pearl jam i dont like them but i respect them, so fuck off hasselhoff and go strum your banjo to the sound of your mum giving line ups.
SeanCambo 3 years ago
What a stupid comment. Someone you don't like performing a song you do, ruins it? And of course this makes them cunts. Why? For liking a song you also like? Grow up.
myshkin 3 years ago 3
have you heard the original? even the biggest pearl jam fan would admit that this is a disgrace.
chemicalsunday 3 years ago
Yes I've heard the original & I love The La's & can't say I'm a Pearl Jam fan. A 'disgrace' suggests disreputable, lowly behaviour. All this is is a band covering a great song, spreading the word of Mavers to a wider audience, & calling them cunts seems to me to be missing the entire point of the song in the first place. What kind of emotion & worldview do u think Lee Mavers is releasing with songs like this & Looking Glass?
myshkin 3 years ago 4
actually its my love for the pearl jam cover that made me take interest in the la's ...whom i have also come to like.
our opinions differ, but don't try to speak for big pearl jam fans like myself, it comes off as pretty damn juvenile.

Eddie does this song with Ben Gibbard from Death Cab For Cutie in 2004. Adds some extra spice to the performance!
