i haven't heard this song in forever, man those awesome times, I find myself not being able to listen to the new smashing p's. I love the music that billy and james created together. I still love billy, but i feel like its betraying the original pumpkins. Over all they have wonderful, great music!! I will listen to the new stuff sometime, eventually ^_^
Once you take into account that the unconscious source of all billy's romantic blowups is the strained relationship he had with his mom in his early life, all of these break up songs are in a sense a tragic echo of a primary, unresloved conflict within his psyche which has repeated itself throughout his life. So in a real sense, Jupiter's Lament offers startling insight into his early experiences with love and women, even if it was never his intent.
By the way for previous comment came out before his mothes death, so that is a farce! But good observation by somebody lost within lost without you! Gone... No however not about billy's mother.
they been my favourite band for about 10 years, i dont get bored of the acoustic stuff because i havent heard anything better its so wicked to people that really like them
Does anyone know the story behind this song? I heard it and thought it was about his mother, but it appeared as a B-side for one of the Mellon Collie singles. Billy's mother died after Mellon Collie.
Jupiter's lament was part of MCIS and billy called it their attempt to write a gospel song. Never have i heard this being a song about his mother. The bsides were released by nov 96.She died in dec 96. Sometimes things get lost in translation. But "For Martha", "Crestfallen" and the whole "Adore" album was written as a tribute towards his mother. In retrospect, the MCIS album was written as a symbolic of the cycle of life. So obviously the human conditions of birth, love, death etc were present.
Great job! I liked how you did the same thing they did with the Tonight, Tonight official video, with the Gerorge Melies space fantasies. Never heard this song before but it makes me want to listen to more Smashing Pumpkins! Thanks! 5/5! And subscribed!

I also think the lullaby tone of this song supports this interpretation.

Yes it is about his mother, basically all of the Mellon Collie b-sides were recorded after the album's release on tour.
