I've had my 1976 2002 since 1976 and wouldn't drive anything else. But I do keep my fingers crossed that some bone head in a 4,000 pound SUV doesn't slam it on our idiot, crazy driver freeways here in southern California. I saw one that got sandwiched between two semi trailers on the freeway. Fortunately, the girl driving it made it through alive.
I love this video. The crown vic did keep up ish. You do have to take into account that had this been a built street car that was actually trying to get away the crown vic wouldn't stand a chance in hell. Yeah the 2002 has a much better power to weight ratio and what not, which in my opinion is why law enforcement needs to rethink the cars that they use.
Everyone knows that a stock crown vic will waste a 2002 0-60, but put them in some corners and the BMW will show it true colors! I have a '72 and love the thing so much, takes corners like its on rails!
Well, the 2002 slows down at least once to let the cop catch up. The course loops back on itself, and the cop was falling back enough that there could have been a collision if the 2002 didn't slow like he did.
Props to the 2002 driver for having the presence of mind to realize that while negotiation the course.
I'm not familiar with 2002's, never driven one, and there aren't really a ton of them around where I live, but it's obvious it's a very light car, with a better power to weight ratio and far better handling than that bulky loaded down crown victoria, yet he still managed to keep up just a bit, even with the 2002 driver slowing down some, it's still an impressive feat for such a big car. It'd be comparable to me racing my pops in his (non CVPI) crown vic in my souped up saturn...
Ray Korman "Uncle Ray" of Greensburg's spartan berb built a race prepped 2002 with a 483 rear and 323 camshaft and smoke the race circuit. There's a dentist who retired with a mental illness in Charlottesville Va that has a huge barn full of these cars that he collect earlier in life. He's probaly a spiritualist in the company of little bimmers.
I know you're not going to believe this. Those 1600-2002's were farm vehicles. They leave them in the barn under a stack of hey. No straw boss intended. That little car is equalent to the Atomic four similar to the british 105e. And get this, there's no job it can't do. I've seen Cart driver jump double trrain cattle cars where the b;lack top got laid correctly. You can tell. The recovery is no cattlecatcher kaboose prize. The nose dive bends the front towing hooks. The Tii works underwater. 999
That's a turkis green tii, I believe - a 74. Probably rebuilt engine with 165hp, heavy sway bars lowered gumball tires etc. It appears to have the stock 3:64 rear end. If he swapped it out to the hard to get 4:11 he would such the doors off a police car on that kind of track...the race-prepped 2002 will outcorner a Ferrarri - w/600lb coil-over spring suspension...
one more to say the bmw2002 is lite as a feather to the interceptor, power to waight ratio is not a joke i.e drag racing any racing. you should show respect that that big car could even be laging close to that pony car. ps i wanna slap the woman laughing in this video . lol thanks for posting your vid.
just dont get it do you . heres a case where the cvpi might win when the beemer goes on a dirt road or off the road for that matter. beemer might get caught . not knockin the bmw it a bad m.f. fun clip thanks
They don't just pit at the drop of a hat you know. Also the cop probably wouldn't be able to keep up with a race prepped 2002 in any situation really.
As for some of you posters, chill out! Who cares what's a better car? It's not a dick measuring contest, and nobody cares about your personal opinions or preferences. I'm sure the person who posted this video intended for it to be enjoyed, not for it to turn into a child like argument! Grow up, especially rik747.
Well Drifter dude I've driven them all since before you were born and owned more of each model than you've ever seen. So I do know something about them. Biggest difference is a Vic is basically shot at 80K while I've seen fleets of Caprices go 300K+!
My cousins 89 crown Vic has WELL over 500+K on it And every last one of those miles was extremely hard on it. I would like to see an identical vid like this of that bloated potato on wheels Chevy called a car;)
thats awesome, dude in the cop car was on it even drifting a lil in the vic..2002tii aren't to be under estimated...esp if it has a m20, s50...or hell a s38 could fit under the hood too :-P
Well yeah the victoria is like twice the size of that 2002, of course it would handle better. You should look up autocrossing wagon and see what you find:)
Wow! What a great find to come across this. I was there that day and it brought back fond memories. Fred Beck's '02 was one fast mo' fo', often competing for Fastest Time of the Day with E36 M3's and 350hp Eclipses.
Fun times. (It also reminds me that I haven't autocrosses since -- and my '92 GS-R of the day is still sitting, undriven in years, in my driveway)
That vid was taken at a Boston BMW Auto-x sometime around '99/'00. Yes, it is Rockingham Park in Salem NH. I'm even briefly in the video standing watching. :) This isn't the only time thay did this either. Good 'drivers training' and community relations if you ask me.

This lil' bimmer rips! Love it. Says a lot about American engineering too since these cars are 30 years apart in age. That's assuming they weren't holding back ... this is all for fun of course, but i'd bet the same result it it weren't. Thanks for the film, more please!
It's not the cops lack of skill, but the fact that the Ford Crown Vic is a pig as far as handling goes. It doesn't even do well at high speeds, and starts to feel "floaty" above 95mph. Bimmer will always leave the Ford in the dust both for handling and top speed. But then again, you can't outrun a radio.
Of course, these were rally & racing cars not get-about-town granny mobiles! I'd be shocked if it couldn't outrun that sluggish heap. In europe they use small sporties for cop cars to assure they aren't out run as seen above.
Uh, and probably how outrageously perfect this '02 handles compared to that pig beast on wheels. It was designed with a low profile to do just that, tight turns, no lag or shimmy on the long stretches. Holds it's own even compared to today's cars, that's why it's a top classic. Humble & beautiful too, either you get it or you don't.
I've got 2002, and it rely stiks on the road like glue. Very god preformance for 70"
