The one thing I hated about this era of hip-hop music, you take a afro-centric Islamic artist like Shabazz, a genius in his own right, and the message alone was not enough for the video to be produced, but these producers and directors of videos had to throw these light, bright, and all white model chicks with no relevance to the actual video, in a way it totally takes away from the message. With that being said though Shabazz was intense, and a lyrical genius.
This song and another called 'Everybody on the Dance Floor' never got proper airplay. The corporate machine at work, trying to put a stop to the 'Enlightenment' phase of Hip Hop and making sure that it never returns. Shabazz was a little too militant for the ARs and we already had Public Enemy in the east and Ice T out west scaring the daylights out of politicians, police and haters of Hip Hop. His spot went to X-Clan.... very unfortunate indeed.
One word...FIIIIIIIIIRE!! This is my shit, Beat is so sick, lyrics on point, Lakim shabazz definitely got it in! One of my favorite songs and videos of all time hands down! Big up to the 45 king!
Like others have said, this was the epitome of hip hop, from the pure hype beat to the vocals and lyrics, an anthem to black pride. If only the video had better production value. Lakim and the 45 King track deserve better!
Damn,I had this! Yeah music like this was a "problem". But Lil and Young (fill in the blanks rapper of the month) talking about self destructive BS is on point? Damn if Malcolm was alive now he'd probably kill himself.
You Damn Right this is Hip Hop! Pro Black Era was the the greatest Hip Hop era 2nd only to the Early 80's and te Golden Era of the early 90's ...You had to have a pro black song on your album or else...anyone remember the Defiant Giants of Howard University (rise black man rise)? Incredible Incredible music and positive energy. Now we've got Gucci Mane....WTF????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????
"I am original, critical, you wanna hear a lyrical / menace win this battle? Cool, cause me, I pity the fool / Cause fools are those who oppose the right way / The rules I chose to go, nobody knows, I might stay / Here to endear, persevere with my skill / I'll drill the science of self inside your head and then I'll build / a strong foundation, now tell me about Lak / I came to tell you my brother, Black is Back"
Intense flow. From an era when hip-hop was joyous & serious. Remember that?
I agree. Unfortunately, I was a little too young to understand this music at the time. Sometimes people do not realize just how great this era of hip hop was until it passed.
I really wish I had a time capsule to take me back to timeframe of 1986-1994. Sadly, we will never see this kind of hip hop again.
It is not about me being an "old foggie"; I just know quality hip hop when I hear it, and I am NOT satisfied with what I am hearing today.
Ain't got nothin' to do with being an old fogie. You ARE hearing quality hip hop. I think I was in my mid early to mid twenties when I heard this classic.
In 88 or 89 thought that this guy is certainly crap, because of the cover. 2005 I bought the record because of this song. Now it´s one of my favourite records in the 80 area. 45 King.
I dig the song , and remember when it was out. It's interesting to look at it now and see that they slipped in some yt girls in this "Black is back" video.

from my favourite hip hop album (ever)...so so so underrated it hurts... 45 king and lakim on his 1st album were pure dynamite...why isnt hip hop like this any more? SO much energy and superb flow

This black soul brother is rappin' his ass off yall. Lord,Lord,Lord thank you so much for 5000% real hiphop. African-American culture at its very best.
I'm in complete agreement. It's now all about money, bling, and sex rather than intelligence and black conciousness. I'm fortunate that we have a handful of today's MCs that are more positive than this corprate garbage on the radio.
I've been looking for this video for years. I lost my Pure Righteousness album years ago. He is one of the reasons I came into the knowledge of myself. Damn I miss this music!
0:28, 0:37, and 0:58 are all Harold Nicholas from the movie Carolina Blues...at 58 sec he slid through 4 brothers legs....search for "Mr BB" on youtube, and you'll see the entire dance number..
