i really liked his show when i was growing up. but his prescriptive approach to foreign language learning is really putting me off now that i've come to appreciate English as a world language rather than the "Queen's English" (mind you, even the Queen doesn't speak the Queen's English these days).
many linguists agree that n/l pair is a free variation in hong kong cantonese nowadays. like LEI5 and NEI5 are both accepted for 你 now
i think sok3 is also acceptable for 索 in 索性. maybe its originally pronounced as saak3 but languages do change overtime!! its meaningless to stick to what's called "correct" pronunciation while everyone else is using another sound
He is right, I hold the same view. People can talk properly these days and now I know the tradition was rooted in the older generations as well. Sad Sad nevertheless just like the Japanese.
Oh my god, this is such a classic. I remember watching it when I was little! Dr. Lau's British English pronounciation is beautiful. He's also so observant to little details of English usage in daily life. I wish we still have this program today!
josiah lau is a great English teacher!

I used to live in an Auckland suburb of 'Epsom'. Yes, it only differs by one letter, but it is about the same as 'Epson'.

ericpong1989 2 years ago 30
