  • I find this Alfa beautiful. Sure it has aged now, but I love those small little lights and the big line for rear lights. And the interior is just ...wow. The one I drove in had beige leather seats and a silver dashboard. It ran like a dream even for a FWD car. Yes Alfas break down. But who cares. If you want a reliable car buy a Golf or something.

  • this guy... ALFA DOESN'T LOOK GOOD -.-

  • why cant the puma be in the US?

  • if you do heel and toe gear shifts on what is essentialy a ford contour, you are stupid.

  • I wish today's Top Gear had this much Clash in it.

  • i miss my cougar so much T.T

  • I have NEVER seen an alfa I've found good looking. I'd take the mercury cougar anyday.

  • I own a 1999 V registered Cougar in the UK with 73,000 on the clock! It's a fantastic drive! The same engine was used in the Jaguar X-type the AJ-V6, the only difference is that the AJ-V6 was a VVT engine. IMO The biggest mistake Ford made with this car, was to make it FWD! The split bucket seats in the rear, would have easily allowed for a longitudinally mounted engine, freely incorporating RWD! Huge marketing mistake by Ford, especially considering the Mercury Cougars muscle car's heritage!

  • making the cougar into a FWD platform kinda made me dislike them

  • 4:16 = Thundercats... HOOOOOOOOOOoooooooooooooooo!

  • This Cougar was based on the European Ford Mondeo(known as the Ford Contour in the US) it has nothing in common with the Ford Probe which was based on the Mazda MX-6. This car was originally going to be called Ford Probe, but Mercury dealers in the US were hurting for product so it was given to Mercury(now defunct). BTW, out of the first and second gen Probe, and the Mercury Cougar, the first gen Probe GT with the turbo 4 was the quickest.

  • @MrSloika the cougar was also partly inspired by the zx2

  • i guess when they reviewed this, it didnt yet have the much better looking european version spoilers. it looks almost twice as good with those.

  • god that alfas ugly

  • It's weird seeing this car without Mercury badging.

  • I've owned a slew of Hondas/Acuras and my Integra GS-R that I had was an excellent car! I also own a 1994 Ford Probe GTV6 5spd and can say that it's every bit as fun to drive as the GS-R was, but since I'm older now and don't race nearly as much as I used to, I will say that the Probe is much smoother to drive and get around town. The torque is what counts as far as I'm concerned. But man, the sound of that B18C1 at the VTEC crossover? Un-For-Gett-able! GSR would beat Probe in twisties I think

  • @whoohaaXL I love Probes. Ive had 5 GT's. Have a look at my channel.

  • I drove it for 2 years. Nice shape, good steering with plenty of feedback. Strong brakes. V6 makes excellent noise but is very slow (at least with automatic gearbox) and thirsty.

  • liked the puma more than the cougar...the ford puma is a sure thing for a future classic

  • Also the Integra is based ont he Civic, an economy car. The Cougar is shitty if it wasn't it would have outsol other cars an got good reviews. The Cougar in North America wasn't good

  • @MaddDogg81 That's because it was based on the Modeo/Contour, which was a terribly unreliable car. That's unfortunate cause it was a stylish, comfortable, and nice driving with the V6.

  • An INtegra would beat it in everything, Handlign if far better in an Integra

  • yeah it is a great car. Just mentioning it

  • I was looking at Top Gear videos and happened to see this one

  • @MaddDogg81 Don't forget the Racing Puma clip where you said exactly the same thing. If your car's so good then you shouldn't have to broadcast it by continually putting other people's cars down.

  • yeah but even the V6 cougar isn'teven that powerful for a 170 2.5 V6. The smaller Hondas have shitty low end torque but the 2 liter and bigger have pretty good pull like the K20 and H22

  • yes but the Cougar isn't that good anyway

  • I drive a 12 year old cougar v6 2.5l and it's perfect. Bit slow for a V6 perhaps, but it's reliable, good looking etc and I wouldn't change it for the world!

  • not the best car fords made but certainle not bad the 2.5 v6 was in the mondeo and was powerful

  • This car is terribly ugly!

  • I drive an frp or racing puma its such a fantastic handling car. But under powered.

  • fuck I would never drive a car like the Puma

  • For a sporty car get the Integra GS-R or Prelude VTEC, I mean they woudl smoke the shit out of this thing

  • @MaddDogg81 Yeah, and? A turbo Impreza coupe would smoke all 3. Doesn't make them bad, just different. A car doesn't need to be the absolute king of the road to be good.

  • @MaddDogg81

yeah and both need to be revved to fuck to get them going. You can't drive cars like that and relax because you are always having to 'drive' it. A nice torquey V6 is a much different, easier car to drive with reasonable performance.

  • @MaddDogg81 It may be true that a GS-R could beat a stock cougar in a straight line. However, if you were to put them on a twisty track, the GS-R could'nt touch it. Also, for a relatively low cost, a 3.0 motor can be swapped in with very little modification. Then the cougar would have the straight line as well.

Lastly, the Integra GS-R is a hopped up factory performance sport coupe. The Cougar is an entry-level sport coupe, bit of a no brainer there.

  • @80sben I don't get exactly what you're saying. A hopped up factory performance sport coupe is not as good as an entry-level sport coupe? Which is the no brainer?

  • The V6 engine is slow

  • fuck I wouldn't drive that Puma thing

I lvoe my black turbo RSX

  • @MaddDogg81 If your shitty RSX is so good then why are you stuck watching Puma and Cougar clips?

  • Nice car!!! This car looks like a Opel Calibra xD!

  • its a 2 door mondeo

  • The Couger - a car perfectly fit for a naughty 40+ year old woman who hunts down young men to have sex with!

  • When he first got out of the car, did your brain instantly chirp "Steven Seagal"

  • heap of junk. a comparitive german/jap/italian coupe would shit over this.

  • Drop a 3.0L motor in the Cougar and I bet he'd like it better then the Alpha.

  • @BumbleBeeGS I don't know about Europe but it was the first and only Cougar sold in Britain.

  • I liked my 25th Anniversary Cougar better. It wasn't anywhere near as sexy, but it made you feel special while behind the wheel. The thought of the 5.0 V8 and rear wheel drive still makes me all warm and fuzzy inside...

  • I believe that, sometime later, Jeremy said the alfa is ugly. The taste is changing.

  • @leedstao on one of the episodes he says that the that Alfa makes him sexually excited when he sees the front.

  • @leedstao He actaully said he can't look at the front of one of those becuase it makes him sexually excited.

  • @leedstao Um no , he actually said he gets sexually aroused when he looks at it...about 2 years ago in season 12 or 13.

  • @leedstao show me when

  • @leedstao No, he said during the Alfa Romeo challenge that he couldn't look at the front because he became sexually excited. He likes it.

  • That Alfa does not look better than the Cougar. It's edgier, but esthetically it has aged. It looks like an old Saturn with a body-kit now, while the Cougar is an Eye-Candy even today. I get looks every day from both sexes and all age categories.

  • @FrostyCoug looks like an sc2 and an acura somehow mixed in a wierd way

  • "Its Got CD..." then it shows the Ford Tape Player! haha! Must have a CD Changer Connected to it then.

  • @djdavedoc yeah it does :P dw

  • ford pwuma

  • @1997FordProbeGT before Ford discontinued the Thunderbird and then re-introduced it as the two-seater, the Mercury Cougar looked almost identical to the Thunderbird for many years.

  • Top Gear has come a long long long way lol

  • @hencotv Actually all its done is become a comedy show and not a Car Magazine Show like it used to be. Fair enough its good to hear about the fastest cars in the world every now and then but id also like to know about Cars that Joe Public like myself can afford to buy. Old Top Gear gave you this kind of Consumer Advice. New Top Gear doesnt.

  • sorry but alfa romeo ? the only thing that brakes down more than italian car is chinese one :D

  • @hercegovac00

    Alfa power! :D

Nothing beats the stylistic beauty of an Alfa Romeo, and who cares if it brakes down. :)

  • @rock3tcat

who cares ? maybe people who would like to go somewhere other than a mechanic

  • @rock3tcat i do

  • Very nice! I own a 01 & I am having the time of my life. Only had 99000 miles on it!!!

  • This was a "Mercury" in America which means most sane people wrote it off as soon as we saw the badge. I still don't think much of it after this review either.

  • I Own One and it is a fun car to drive and you can drive it whole day, hawe fun with it and you don't get exosted. It has a wery good grip, stearing is wery precise and engine does sound like angy lion-that's good ;). Design IS as good as Alfas and it it is catches the looks ;))

  • @AlexisSLO learn to write

  • @TomKlassen No , i don't need and i won't. You understand me and that's the point. I am from Slovenia, so if you don't loke something, get a dictionary and ... bom pisal v slovenskem jeziku, kajti so vsi jeziki sveta enakovredni. Translate it for your self !!

  • Sorry but I it looks lame!

  • I beg you - whats the song from 4:47? I know it - but don't know a title or artist - plz help. :)

  • @goldrush255 it's the clash , rock the casbah

    enjoy!

  • @margijager

    OMG! Thank yoooouuuuuu! :D

  • music title from 3:11

    can anyone tell me, please?

  • @fleycds the song is called "White Riot" and the band The Clash)))

  • Comment removed

  • lovin the clash in this vid

  • ford puma?

  • sorry clarky but the Alfa is ass, it breaks down and has a Fiat Tipo chasis, its a may be fast in a straight line but it handles like a shopping trolly and for that reason, its useless, whats power without control?

  • @bign3ck if you are a skilled driver then you can control the power stupid

  • @bign3ck Compared to the Cougar I think its just a tad better. The resale values now say it all.

  • what a gay car

  • @gsstanza , gay is your brother ..

  • the puma's engines are not great avoid!!!

  • Even though i prefer the ford, i think Jeremy's final verdict if fair enough

  • The v6 cougar is not 'little'. I'm six foot and was fully stretched out yawning in a traffic queue for the Dartford tunnel the other night. Given the choice between an m3 and a v6 cat, I'd take my cat any day, and I've driven both!

  • awesome i've been trying to find a clarkson review on my cougar !!!!!!

  • To bad its an abomination. The cougar is suposed to be an american muscle not a little coupe

  • @Iwasbored76

Not it is the equivalent of the 406 coupe...

  • I see the completly neutral 1997ProbeGT is bring some unbiased information on probes to the table! mid 15 sec car is respectable but not particularly fast. The interior quality on those cars was pretty poor as well (I owned two at one point) Vette, Viper or Camaro are the only cars faster then a Probe at the time eh? I'm not sure thats entirely accurate? Smooth and Sexy and shifts like a dream eh? oh dear! ever try a S2000 shifter? that is a dream

  • Thanks for uploading all the videos. Much appreciated

  • These cars are pretty underrated in North America but they're also hard to work on, the 2.5L V6 is cramped and some of the parts are expensive. Same reason the Contour/Mystique V6 wasn't so hot around here. It got called the Mercury Mistake by almost everyone who owned one after all.

  • And why are you even comparing a german hot hatch to a terribly made, ugly old Ford?

  • The MKIV GTI not a nice drivers car? You're kidding. I love mine. Better than any other car in it's class, and better than most really expensive cars. It's got plenty of power, and handles corners better than a 3 Series BMW.

  • The Cougar is a fantastic car, yes its not the fastest car out there (not too slow either) but its such a smooth ride/cruiser.....as clarkson says its fun to drive

  • alfa's win, i wish they sold them in canada

  • This car replaced the Ford probe. As I own a Ford probe I think i'ts much better looking then the cougar the cougar has lost it's style.

    but that's what I think.

  • @TheProbeman2009 What you know as the Ford Probe is actually the Ford Probe I. There were more versions (II, III, IV etc) but they never made it into production.

  • In the US you would never see a "Mercury" Cougar with out a girl driving it. I did see guy driving one once though, but I assumed he was borrowing his sisters car.

Most V6/I4 Coupes in the US are driven by girls. Sad fact...

  • @GhostofRazors Lol big diff with US and rest of world though.....Cheap petrol (gas) !!!! Man i feel like moving to the US just to have a big ass engine to play with every day.......you guys are lucky!

  • @zu1875lu ya we kinda are, but not everyone has a big engine, i mean my mons truck only has a 4 litter v-6 (2007 Ford Exploer Sport Trac limited) and my dad only has a 2 4 cylinder 2007 ford fusion so ya :),

  • @zu1875lu And I'd rather move from the US to the UK! You guys get the COOLEST cars in the mini/supermini class. I.E.; Fiat Barchetta/Coupe Turbo, Seat Ibiza Cupra, Citroen/Peugoet Saxo/106GTI, Ford Puma/ Escort (the good ones!) Fiat Bravo/Punto, Alfa Romeo GTV6....God what I wouldn't give to live there.

  • @zu1875lu man that was so true like 12 years ago

  • @infiernoboy1 Still cheaper today in US for gas than in Europe

  • @zu1875lu I just had a relative over for 2 weeks from England. In england, my 86' Grand Marquis would not LITERALLY fit on alot of the roads. They pay roughly, 16 dollars a GALLON. Beef, 60 bucks for a kilo, turkeys average a $120!!! And the guns, you cannot own a firearm without everything but a blood test! So yes, while I love the english accent and jeremy clarkson is the best thing to come out of britian since the Jaguar E-type. I am OH SOO grateful to be an american.

  • @zu1875lu Relatively our gas is just as expensive, the US has a low per-capita income.

  • @wootness3000 US has higher GDP than japan by far... So I'm not sure what your talking about.

  • 170hp in a coupe in 98 wasn't bad, its not a sports car right? and the 2.5 V6 is a really smooth motor, the cougar was really good looking when it came out too, even slower cars with a solid motor are good, probe was like that, not really fast but great to drive

  • @Kingsoupturbo Plus you could use the money saved by buying the Ford and buy some sort of power additive like a turbo kit, supercharger, or even just installing larger cams and increasing the bore of the pistons.

  • @Kingsoupturbo yup, not everything is about horsepower. they are also light cars so a 2.5 v6 can do very well for a small coupe

  • Clarkson is such a Ford fanboy it's annoying. The "big angry lion"? Oh for fuck's sake it's only got 170 Bhp, which was rubbish even for 1998 standards.

  • @JELH never drive a ford i guess.........

  • @errant3 I drove a Ka 1.6, Fiesta 1.6, Escort 1.8 16V, Focus 2.0 16V. do they count as Fords?

  • @JELH so, i don't get why you're disappointed. c

  • @JELH

LOLwut? 170hp was plenty in 1998. The VW GTI 1.8T had 150, VR6 had 172. It was plenty in those days

  • @poppaschlong2000 that's true but the mk4 golf was not a very good drivers car and the alfa in the video has 230hp so it is a big difference

  • @JELH 170 bhp was bang on the money for a 2.5 in 1998. Vauxhall's 2.5 V6 had 170 bhp at that time, as did BMW's 2.5 i6, Audi's 2.4 V6 and Mercedes' 2.4 V6.
